why does everyone say you can’t listen for enjoyment with flat signature. yes there are serious reasons to get as flat as possible, but it doesn’t mean music sounds bad when it isn’t colored during reproduction
@pow-low

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I enjoy listening to all my music with a flat uncolored sound signature. I am interested in knowing which of the music in my collection is mastered well and which isn't. I enjoy hearing what was recorded as exactly as possible. No more and no less.

It's a shame that, after all this time, Etymotic continues to be the only reasonable choice for an IEM in the vast market of junk today, due to unsubstantiated opinions and claims from the unknowledgeable and uninformed masses who prefer to listen to severely flawed and inferior products. It's irritating, quite frankly.

Merry Christmas. I have been listening Etymotic ER4SR exclusively in 2018. This IEM is very tip picky and MUST use it in deep insertion,otherwise the FR provided is not saying anything. Triple flange tip sounds best and it is the FR sheet you get.Try use the classic grey ER38-38 tips, its better than the clear version in the box. triple flange also has better bass extension.Shure white triple flange and cut the stem like er38-18. sounds much fuller and slightly warmer. I learn those from head-fi's over a 800 pages thread-If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you... ER4 with triple flange tips is like timberland boots, they tortures your ear/foot for a month, if you are use to it, you'll love it. Or you can hate it.

I don't know about the others but the ER4SR and 4XR have been my go to earphones because it's tuned so right. Best for anything acoustic and Jazz. The IE600 and Accoustune sound really coloured in comparison. However, it should be known that I'm using a Tom Christiansen TCA HPA-1 headphone amplifier with iFi Zen DAC Signature V2. The combination is a killer and the amp designer owns the Etymotic and a Focal, so I won't be surprised he has sampled the amp with those earphones/headphones. Any amp or setup can wow you the first time, but it's the ones that you keep going back to that is the best tuned and well designed audiophile equipment, and these are them (ER4SR, 4XR, TCA HPA-1).

Merry Christmas everyone! I owned the ER3XR, which I heard was pretty similar to the ER4XR besides the channel matching, better stock cable, country of production, and quality tolerances, and maybe a few slight sonic differences. My intent was to use them as a daily driver that blocks noise, has good enough comfort, good sound, and hopefully has minimal microphonics. I understand that half of my needs aren't even what the ER line is designed for, but I was hopeful nonetheless, as I heard good things about them. I'm not a bass head, but I thought that I couldn't go wrong with a few decibels of bass boost in comparison to the SR. I used the triple flange eartips (S), that they came with, as I'm not a big foam person. Just walking around with them, I found the microphonics quite noticeable even with wearing the cable over ear, and under my shirt (unbearable if worn down and over the shirt). Unfortunately they didn't work with the 3rd party MMCX cable I got on amazon either. Putting them on required me to open my mouth, and pull my ear back a little as shown on their website (can be a little annoying have to do that every time). The tips were uncomfortable after a couple hours, (I use triple/double flanges regularly, and am 100% used to the pressure change and deep insertion that they're known for) which is an issue further compounded by the fact that they have small soundports, meaning I couldn't do my usual tip rolling. Isolation was a bit better than my MA750s with triple flanges, but after all the other nitpicks I had, I wasn't going to keep them. Sadly, I was too put-off by auxiliary factors that I never got to run these through my audition playlist. (though I didn't remember there being anything to write home about from my limited listening) Once again, have to emphasize that I was stupid for trying to buy these with the intent of using them on the go, given their intended use. In the end I returned them, and a few months later I bought the DM6s because of BGGAR's glowing recommendation and have never looked back.

These are some of the most accurate headphones IEM/over-ear. More accurate than an HD800 or HD600 and up there with the Focal Utopia but will obviously not have the same dynamics as those but will compete in detail. However, that doesn’t mean they will be for everyone or all types of music. Similar to listening to a flat near field studio speaker setup, it may feel a bit cold. Really these are tuned not for harman curve but for a diffuse field curve. They are accurate to how sound enters your ear, including bass. The reason most people want more emphasized bass is that typically we will feel bass on our body and bass elevated headphones can create this perception. HBB, Check out some environmental field recordings check out the app Naturespace for iOS / Android. Get a couple of the thunderstorm tracks. With ER4SR it is truly holographic with binaural and among the most natural sounding IEM. There is a reason they are praised and have stood the test of time. Here we have a company that literally pioneered in-ear monitors. Etymotic are in essence acoustic engineers who have refined a product / research based approach, rather than manufactures who come out with more flavours than Baskin Robbins. Here’s the kicker, or rather lack of. Yes the ER4SR is not for bass heads. Drum n bass and hip hop will sound weak but classical and acoustic will be realistic. Subwoofer music needs bass. The XR helps a bit towards this but I use another set for these genres. For reference some of my my fav iems are Sony 7550, Z5, XBA-A3, haven’t got around to the N3 (those appear to hit harman dead on). For over-ear sets my current favourites are Fostex TH-X00 which have awesome bass, Utopia and HD800. Fav IEM at the moment, aside from the SR is XBA-Z5 which has a bit too much bass but is enjoyable and high-quality. Just wanted to add another opinion. Feliz Navidad

I don't know about hip hop because I don't listen to it, but DnB sounds incredible on these. Don't let the name fool you, DnB is all about the mids and highs, as that is where all the detail and nuance in the genre is. Obviously you don't want completely anaemic bass, but the ER-4 does the genre justice imo. Some DnB fans just want bass cannons, and that's fine. But as someone that both loves the genre and love my audio gear, I can definitely appreciate these IEMs. One thing that must be noted is that getting a perfect seal is paramount to making these sound good. If you don't get a perfect seal they're gonna sound like ass. Tri-Flange tips are basically mandatory for this; might as well throw the others out.

@Immortal These are great. Imaging is fantastic. The only thing they're missing imo is dynamics. People exaggerate when they say they can't do bass. They just need a good seal and a strong amp. There may be better IEMs out there, but they'll cost a LOT more money.

They're not quite diffuse field, they're tilted in the treble. Etymotic says -5db by 10khz. The new unofficial standard for the new industry couplers are diffuse field plus a 10db tilt downward over the 10 octaves from 20-20khz, very much alike the Etymotic target.

You do realize that you have totally misunderstood the equal-loudness contours. The "story" behind the graph you are looking at while spreading false information is that humans perceive the sounds to be equally loud by the loudness indicated on the graph. The lower the line is the louder you perceive the sound so you have understood it totally wrong and human hearing is most sensitive at 2-5 kHz frequencies. If this was not how you understood the thing then all is fine but that is how I interpreted your explanation and that is how a layman will most likely interpret it. The funnier thing is that this doesn't really matter because music is mixed by ear so the perceived loudness gets compensated by the mixing person perceiving his work on flat studio monitors. The relevant effect of the phenomenon is that the equal-loudness contours change by the sound pressure level so when you go higher on SPL the perceived frequencies flatten out so your bass perception relative to everything else gets better. For more information start with a basic Wikipedia page Equal-loudness contour.

Rezzzn0r I used comply foam tips when I was using the Hf5s. After I got the ER4XRs, I did keep using the comply tips because they were much more comfortable. However, I do agree with you, I ended up switching to 3-flange tips for better clarity overall. I found the foam tips make the high roll off faster and the lower mids and bass loose their clarity. Hence, a warmer sound.
