You can go the French way of reforms where every other year the king had just a tiny bit more power until his rule was absolute or you can go the Danish way where you pretty much go from feudalism to absolutism in a month by what is really just a coup d’etat against the various estates

Always take the province of Novgorod in the first war. Its a center of trade and you wont have to siege down that T3 fort twice.

Capitals are more expensive in peace deals, so in order to not waste warscore, it could be smart to wait with conquering Novgorod to the second war.

Capitals are more expensive, but you have CB for it, and its highest WS province. Beside that, it is possible to take all border provinces and Novgorod. And if you take it in first war, autonomy will drop sooner.

When i play Russia, i get ridiculous alliances, Poland-Denmark at the start is almost certain. PLC-Ottoman, Austria-Ottoman, France-Ottoman (and somehow France gets through entire HRE too!~) It is a constant hassle to break these kind of alliances, makes it harder to rotate wars to prevent coalitions.

Muscovy in the hands of a player is very fun, almost easy. Though playing against it is not as satisfying as having to beat the Ottomans. Who always seem to be the #1 GP in all my games. And are a pain in the behind to take down. Russia often times falls behind tech, has a hard time with embracing institutions and is too poor to afford an effective army. Which is all historically accurate. How they managed to become so huge IRL is crazy when you think about it.

Ottomans are never a problem if you take care of them early, i know it depends how you are playing but even as a minor in europe is easy to screw them early, Russia is always pretty bad unless they grab trade ideas early, i notice that when they get it they are always pretty good challenge

By the time of Ivan Grozny most of the work was already done. Russia annexed Crimean khanate after they had a pacific coastline, for example.

In reality, Russia was not so far behind in technology, as is commonly believed in Western propaganda. But the problem the Russians is that they created a first-class army with the best weapons and then began to rest on their laurels. Until the enemy surpassed them in technology and invaded Russia. Then the Russians began a feverish leap in technology and again created a better army and destroyed the enemy. And then they stopped the development of the army again... etc...

29:05 Bold is still a trait that makes the AI declare dumb wars. I’m playing an England campaign right now and the Ottomans declared on my ally Austria(and called in no allies) in one of the dumbest wars I’ve ever seen an AI declare. Ottomans had 41k men and 10k manpower. Austria alone had 45k and a Hungary PU, and was allied to me with my subjects(Ireland Scotland Gascony Aragon). I think it was something like 50k men vs. 250k(and we had manpower to spare too) when everyone had buffed up their armies for the war and I was super confused about why they declared it. That’s when I realized he was Bold. Your reaction to their DoW was almost my exact reaction

On the topic of exploring the east, with the subjugate Kazan mission you get a conquistador as well. You can use that guy to fill in the blanks. Also, a lot of those provinces are wastelands, so it can trick you into missing something, when actually it doesn't matter much

I forgot about edicts. The last Muscovy run I tried, it was very frustrating keeping up with tech, I spent so many points getting renaissance, and colonialism and my neighbors got ahead in tech, which made wars frustrating as I remember a 15 stack of Kazan destroying a 23 stack I had, and I had to have nearly double the army to beat any army, which destroyed my man power.

24:00 if you get to 90 modernization and then either humiliate a rival or have no rival, you get to click a decision that gives you an awesome tier 1 govt reform. That govt reform gives you ccr, manpower, reduced war exaustion, dev cost among other things. It will allow you to play both tall and wide at the same time.

Not sure if the Angevin England missions lock you out of forming France tho.

May I ask you how can you continue to expand, keep up to date and develop so hastily? I struggle to earn the monarch points, expecially administrative ones, while going on with the game..

you cant really do all all the same time. coring conquered provinces takes admin points. so if you fast conquer everything you will lack admin points to develop and take new admin technologies. you could for example balance it out a bit by having a vassal and you give them the provinces you conquer. so they will use their own admin points to core those province. and you then diplo annex them, but that costs diplo points. so you need to micro manage things. dont take technologies that are like +100% the price because you are taking them ahead of time or dont have appropriate institution embraced. you dont need any technology ahead of time unless its military tech and you are planning to war. rather bank up your monarch points and wait for tech prices to reduce. if you are getting near your limit, you then spend some to develop provinces. if you are really late in embracing institution, you need to start developing provinces to embrace the institution sooner.

sometimes its even better to not take the technology until you get reduction in price because you are falling behind in tech. because it pays off better that you develop provinces to spawn new institutions into your country sooner than it would reach you naturally.

Hi Spatrk, thanks for the hints, usually I take ahead of times technologies for the few years of bonuses that they give; I started to give priority to diplo-develop provinces and admin points management got a bit better. I'll try to avoid to spend unnecessary points on technologies without the proper institution embraced.

@@StefanoCleriIricav you can bring institution into your province by mass developing it. for example when renaissance spawns anywhere, you can start putting all your points into developing your capital province, every development point gives you some points towards spawning next available institution (if its already spawned in the world) to your province. once it spawns in your developed province, it will slowly spread like normal to neighbouring provinces. that way you can force institutions into your country a lot faster.

I tend to develop provinces using the provinces "recap" menu, on the top left, from where you can for example set the armies templates; there I can see at glance the best provinces for tax, production and manpower modifiers, so I develop the best ones in these categories, just for a few points and as I proposed just if for example and respectevely: - need to increase institution spread - need to increase money income or to exploit some temporary benefits from events to trade and production - need to increase manpower I do this only if cost isn't more of ten times of current monarch points increase. Could this be an ok rule of thumb to you..? Sorry for the long writing, I just re-took Europa Universalis 4 recently, thanks to RedHawk videos too, as I didn't like previously the monarch points system, I remember from Europa Universalis 2 that I liked more for example population increase and development just based on money income, which probably wasn't that balanced from country to country. I exactly don't remember if monarch points where introduced already in Europa Universalis 3, I played very little that game, it was a bit too complex compared to the "arcade" experience of EU2 and EU4, to me :P
