Unlike tight rope style arm movement, arm flailing | yaw steering - flail arms left to twist EUC right and vice versa, is useful for low speed balance, idling, or to do a quick 90 or 180 degree twist. A lot of riders will extend arms outwards when extra balancing is needed. Arm flailing | yaw steering for balance is often taught for beginners on pedaled unicycles. In my case, when I first started on my V8F, arm flailing allowed me to do laps around a tennis court at 3 to 5 mph on my first attempt. I then moved to a long straight outdoor parking lot where I found my V8F became stable at 6 to 8 mph and I no longer had to make balance corrections, relaxed my arms, and learned proper tilt steering (inner foot down, outer foot up).

I sometimes use a variant of the grumpy old man that I call "The Genie". You know the one I'm talking about. Mostly do the Zombie (because I'm boring, and because it's a good way to make sure drivers of other vehicles notice what you're doing with your arms, say signaling changing direction) when I want more control, and "I've Given Up On Life" when my hands are cold. On the note of that arms used for signaling - drivers really do not trust you on a EUC. At all. I'm signaling right in the bike lane, this guy in front wants to go right on the tarmac... He just sits there. Waiting. Like he's a hired killer, just waiting for the perfect time to ambush me. It's honestly unnerving.

I'm not sure if I have one particular style of riding. I guess the way I ride really depends on what kind of riding I'm doing. If I'm trying to ride fast, I do the aerodynamic thing. If I'm trying to turn and carve, I shift my stance according to the speed and direction I intend to go. If I'm riding slowly and trying to do tricks, I move my arms hips shoulders knees and ankles to shift my weight enough to maintain balance. I don't worry so much about how I look as long as I achieve my end goal. I'm sure my form will improve as my experience grows.

I have a style I like to do I call "The Falcon" - This is done either accelerating quickly, or at speed - kind of a "show off" style, usually while wearing futuristic space ranger gear. You lean forward with body straight, arms behind, slightly out - like a ninja, fists closed - having a pair of Guardian Angel mini lights - one on each wrist complements the effect. Responses from all generations when around car traffic have been overwhelming positive.

I do a combo of most of those. Carving because it loosens me up a bit when I start out for a ride, it feels nice and admittedly I feel pretty cool in my own mind. I may go on to put my thumbs in my pockets and casually let my hands casually dangle down, sometimes I'll pop my hands around the back and loosely hold them together, and sometimes, when the going gets tough, I go back to my roots and let my arms do whatever they need to do to save me from falling. At this point appearances do not matter, be they in my own mind or based on our shared reality. Survival comes first and foremost.

It's worth mentioning that whilst hands in pockets is a bad habit, putting your hands out in a fall is bad. Best to train your reaction to be twisting into your shoulder. When falling on an EUC you have more momentum than you may realise and could easily ruin an elbow, wrist, forearm or shoulder. Whereas on your shoulder, you will just hurt your shoulder (mostly).
@wheellifejon2 жыл бұрын
While i agree... instinct kicks in and your hands go out in front of you in a flash, particularly during a crash at high speed. Plus, I broke my arm badly just under the shoulder socket from.a fall as you described.
@Tennouseijin2 жыл бұрын
I'd say it depends on a number of factors - your speed, your armor, your previous injuries, your surroundings (flat surface or obstacles?), and how confident you are in your ability to roll out of a fall as opposed to coming to a sudden stop. The best approach might be different for a person who had previous shoulder injuries, for example. My mother had shoulder injuries, and now when she walks on slippery surfaces e.g. frozen pavement in winter, she does keep her hand in her pocket specifically to prevent the instinctive motion of using your arm to cushion a fall, in case she slips on the ice. I on the other hand started riding EUCs for commuting (bike paths, and when that's not available, pavement. I don't plan on competing with cars for the road), and as I improve my skills, I plan on going offroad at low speeds. So I don't have a need to ride fast, but I do expect to ride in rough terrain, with lots of obstacles, and in bad weather/snow. I may also try more technical riding, tricks etc. as I find it much more appealing than speed. So, for my use case I just expect to wear ATGATT, and go at slower speeds to reduce risk. I also have some experience in martial arts, and I hope my 'art of falling safely' (ukemi?) skills are up to the task should I need them... I may refresh them before trying anything crazy, I've already looked up some parkour tutorials as well... those guys also generally know how to fall safely, I could learn a lot from them. And those techniques often do rely on your arms and hands making contact with the ground, just in a controlled manner, bent properly etc. I think this might be better for my use case. Also, apparently for offroad EUC riders, rib injuries are somewhat common. You know, taking a rock or root to your ribcage. So, going shoulder-first maaay be a little risky in that regard. But then again, any fall on a forest path is not going to be pleasant.

You're bang on about aero. Looks at the new gen of Chinese EVs. They don't have huge battery packs (like the SUVs) but they get great range and economy because they shave every possible aerodynamic inefficiency off the body. To that end, I ride in speedos, covered in oil. This has the side benefit of making it harder for the police to grip you if they take exception to your riding an EUC in the first place. Curiously the police do seem more interested in me since I started doing this though.

Generally my arms are just hanging around and I’m not especially concerned about how I look, but when I’m around cars or crossing pedestrians I do signal my turns and always feel a little weird because it looks odd on an EUC. @@wheellifejon yeah, we’re doing the same thing, I feel like people here react differently to the EUC than the bike. Might just be in my head. It’s reminds me of when you waterski, you are supposed to display a flag when the skier is down to warn other boaters away, but so few people know that so when you do it on a casual lake, people think you are in distress and come up to the boat to ask if you need help, the precise opposite of what the flag means. I feel like people think I’m pointing at them and stop to look at me like I want to talk to them, when I want them to keep driving so I don’t have to dismount. May just be a cultural thing. Turn signal usage among drivers is probably under 30% compliance in the US at this point.

Of course, you'll need ideas for shows. How about a hyper-milling contest where we see who can get the most range, either by slowing to a turtle's pace or racing like a hare to catch the tail end of a lorry and regenerating power while the ICE vehicle pulls us up the mountain grades? The "don't try this at home" disclaimers apply, which is why I want you to demonstrate the genius of regenerative charging on the go.

My assumption is that the limiting factor is the heat generated in proportion to the regen-braking back-pressure applied, so monitoring temperature alarms is key to efficiency.

Calving, I don't think riding in a static pose is a good idea for too long. Calving keeps you more in touch with the wheel and what is going on. Not that you have to calve that much, my favourite in fact is a much gentler style, with just a hint of emphasis from one foot to the other. What was missed, riding with camera's, selfie-poles etc. They can mess you up, and of course you move them around, in front, to the rear, side, high, low. I guess this extends to using a mobile, even looking at a smart watch. Riding styles also extend to foot positions, from the same both sides to one foot slightly forward, feet tight into the wheel or not, a bit forward helping acceleration and inclines, or back helping braking. Riding styles - seated? Haven't actually tried this myself. Great subject for a video, getting clever with the effects and animations as well, putting my videos to shame.
