Hello Robert. I have driven diesels and petrol cars all my life as i commute a fair bit. Your personality made me interested in your YT channel and your episode on the Kia Optima Hybrid made me order one, no joke. Trading in my Q5 diesel in a week or two. Fully Charged: changing one person at a time :-)

@Simon this seems to be a good decision to me, especially since you move away from a fridge shaped tank to something more reasonably designed as a street car. I am aiming for a small CNG vehicle next since I want to avoid the mess involved with building and recycling batteries and simply because it is cheaper and at the european energy mix almost clean as an ev.

until you realise that a lot of the smog in Delhi etc. comes from (millions?) of small vehicles (tuk tuks) running on CNG... Combusted CNG produces lots of NOx.

Well, if you have poor mixture control, yes. It responds well to the same emissions controls that work well and cheaply on gasoline engines, though. (Still, it's not as good as not running an engine at all.)

Hi Robert. Great series. interesting seeing this episode on EUREF just after seeing your tv program on Temple Guiting. Looks like it needs to be a new build or regeneration location without being AONB, Listed, legacy infrastructure, etc etc. How about approaching Cherwell District Council to persuade them to create a EUREF style micro smart grid system at their new Graven Hill (Bicester) development of 1900 self build homes. plus school, community facilities, shops and industrial area all on an ex MOD base. all new infrastructure going in now so hopefully it will be built to facilitate new and future technologies starting with micro generation and storage locally, the hill is windy enough for a BIG turbine or two... locals wont like it though. As its Council owned through their own development company (Graven Hill Development company) NOT a Commercial developer it would possibly be one of the easiest locations to achieve this if its possible anywhere in the UK. It would make a great program or series. After watching your show Im Now looking at electric vehicle for my next car, I hope there is a VW EPolo out later in the year when the model is refreshed.

Take an econ class then you learn that Free market works only when common good is protected and priced. In fact Only role of government in economy should be to determine these cost and protect common goods. fossil fuel cost to environment is not paid. In fact fossil fuels are heavily subsidized. If government is not doing its job (which is the case here) then there is no free market and therefor your argument of market making the best choices is invalid. I really hope we had a real free market, but we dont.

On small correction (sort of). The electric bus at Südkreuz station that he mentioned is not the one shown in this video. Actually there are multiple full size electrical busses operated as a normal bus line by our local transport company. The bus shown in the video is a prototype of an autonomous mini bus from a Canadian company operated by our national railway company. it's only going around the EUREF campus but they are planning to extend the service to Südkreuz station in the future. But first they need to get it approved for public roads. It's a great experience but yet needs a lot more development before it could get really useful. I hope there's coming a video about it to (of course it's electric). One last thought about the campus. It's nice to see what the future could be like, but the claim that they reached the 2050 pollution target today seams a bit funny when you walk around there and see all those dirty fossile fuel cars parked there. The campus may have reached the targets, but the people working there don't.

i have a colleague that works for schneider.... he recently had to update his company vehicle.... he could spend up to 35 thousand pounds... !!.. interestingly enough though, not one EV/hybrid on the vehicle list they supply or incentive to move from Diesel which he was interested in doing.... seems these large companies are very quick at advertising what they CAN do..... but there missing a great advertising slogan when nearly all of their sales team and engineers turn up in 'Dirty Diesels' here in the UK.... especially when there business model is to promote/sell energy saving products... !

Quick question, I've not really understood the concept of car to home, as in using the car as a mobile battery. I get the idea of an emergency backup in a power cut or natural disaster but how does it help in day to day use? My worry would be parking my car up with 70% soc and coming back to it expecting a full charge and only having 30% left 🤔 How's it actually work?

This is all a seems a bit ott. Why is this better than ensuring the national grid takes this approach?
@MacGuyver85
@MacGuyver85 7 жыл бұрын
It's a concept. The idea is you want to move the energy as few as possible and use it locally as much as possible. Think a bit bigger and each town can be its own micro-grid. In reality each house will become its own micro-grid inside the town micro-grid inside the country wide grid. It reduces the investments (and thus cost) of the main grid, increases efficiency and allows better use of renewables. Each house will have its own storage, generate its own power and charge its own car(s) while also shifting demand (heating/cooling, washing etc.). At the same time it will interact with the town grid. Thing is there is a lot of technology to be developed to do this intelligently. For example it makes a lot of sense for the town grid to have some knowledge of the stored power inside each sub micro-grid and an idea of future demand so it can manage its own resources predictably and more efficiently. Same goes for the main grid. The future doesn't spring up like a mushroom, we need to nurture and grow it.
@davidprice875
@davidprice875 7 жыл бұрын
My house already does most of this in that it only draws from the grid if there isn't enough solar and sends energy to the grid after putting surplus energy into a heat store. I plan on adding an EV and battery in the future which will also be managed within my micro-grid/house. However, I don't want someone else to dictate when I wash my clothes or charge my car. A "smart" grid where micro/grids can import/export energy is a good idea but it needs to operate as a marketplace rather than under central command. The technology is already available, the issue is applying it at scale and economically. In this country the problem is bureaucracy.
@heatleynoble
@heatleynoble 7 жыл бұрын
It just seems like micro grids like this need a whole section on policy ideas on a national scale that would enable a future like this. I have a PV and an EV but it is not an intelligent marriage. I know there is a company that has built an intelligent adapter now (the same lot that built immersun) that will divert excess of to the car. It's good as a small example but not good at scaling up.
@MacGuyver85
@MacGuyver85 7 жыл бұрын
Well most of the problems you see now is that everybody is dragging their feet to switch to implement actual power prices at the consumer level. Once that is there the market should do its job. So then the choice will be yours to run your washing machine when you want. It'll just be more expensive to do so if power is pricey at the point.
@MacGuyver85
@MacGuyver85 7 жыл бұрын
I think that's the whole point; establishing the technology to be able to support this infrastructure. Developing standards for the industry etc. No better way to do that than actually implement every facet of what it should be (PV, wind, biomass, EVs, heating, cooling etc.)
