Its going to be heavily dependent on electricity costs. I live in one of the better areas for solar in the us but the pay back period is awful because my electricity is cheap about 9.5 cents a kwh in the winter and 10.5 during the summer.

I live in Thailand and just bought a house. As some of you know, Thailand grid is very bad. Power cuts are often and sometimes long. Electricity in price has gone up a bit and there is no cheap tariff. Same price all the time. I'm really interested in getting solar with powerwall to go 100% of grid. Very good video.

If their were state & federal subsidies working in conjunction with local utilities to help home & business owners to install solar and battery power storage systems such as the Tesla Powerwall 2 we could all contribute to a more sustainable future. The problem is even with the tax credit which equals between 2k-9k it is still quite expensive. You are looking at roughly 22k from start to finish. Any gov subsidies would have to offset that cost dramatically for most to take advantage of it and make it worthwhile.

I live in Texas. My average electric bill is $120 per month for a 3 bedroom 2 bath home. I figure the battery costs $7000 USD and the solar array with components to hook it up completely would run another $13000 easy. It would take 14 years to pay for itself assuming my utility bill is zero. He said the battery would last at the most 10 years with diminishing power as time progressed. I don’t see this as feasible or economical for use in the Southern US. I don’t own an electric car because they cost too much. I think solar and wind are wonderful but they have to come way down in cost before they are economical for the average person even with rebates.

Real M Trump is trying to create jobs in West Virginia. Why don’t the solar manufacturers move there. There in China because they pay slave wages and and the government steals our technologies. China is not as great as you claim. Why don’t Apple and other big American companies build their products here? I’d love to see us more invested in green tech here but the liberals regulate business until they leave the country. As long as coal & natural gas are cheaper then they will dominate. I have to comment on the honesty of the installer company with regards to payback time. I have had lots of phone calls from companies telling me it would pay back in 2 years etc which i knew was BS but refreshing to see an honest battery fitting company.

We covered every square inch of roof with panels... 7.2K solar... Very happy we did. Never a question about whether we cover the usage. Byproduct of this is that we are growing our electric footprint by adding electric cars(Bolt), ranges, heat pumps, etc. Removing natural gas appliances one-by-one. This is the right thing to do - regardless of payback time - don't even ask the question. What are you doing to help the CO2 problem?

Can you adjust angle of your panels? at UK latitude, optimal angle in winter is around 60-70 degrees, and in summer - 20-30

I would recommend you nice online calculator, that lets you calculate how much energy you can generate (based on setup entered) per day, in you area (by clicking on the map) on average month-by-month, but I doubt you can read Russian.

I'm off grid with 2.5kw of installed solar. Winter production is good if it isn't overcast. Panel string voltage is typically higher when the panels are cold in the winter

11/10 I'm very happy the installation guy was fair in terms of cost and benefit of using the batteries in a typical EU home. As someone having developed such systems, I can back his opinions very much, he was on point on everything he said. In the middle east, where grid is bad and they need diesel generators for electricity, such systems save loads of money because of diesel savings.

Love your work, Kryten. We've got three PW2s and 20kW here in Australia, and we have a Sunny Island unit that effectively keeps us on-grid even when there's no mains power. The power company here cuts our mains off if there's a chance of a bush fire, so having this configuration pretty-much means we never have to start the diesel generator.

Next time you're in australia, visit HBPowerwall (youtube channel). He made a powerwall using old laptop battery cells of 40 Kwh. Charges them from his solar panels and his system does work during a blackout. (Which is cool, the whole neighborhood dark except for his house). Total investment he made are lower than what you paid for your battery system. (Not counting the hours he invested ofcourse, but it's a hobby, you can't put a price on hours worked on your hobby.

That would change the config. Which FITs crew say would change the feed in tariff. :o( So, our installed in 2010 would drop from 60p to 8.5p. You can get away with installing Micro inverters normally. So, you might be able to wing it on this? Waiting for the Off-Peak facility to be launched. Then you can make it pay for itself just using Shifting load. Good Video though.

Thanks Jason. I left them a message. They seem to have 3 & 5kW version and it seems you add additional batteries against the PowerWalls default 13.4kW. The inverter can only pull 2.5kW against 3.68kW of the Tesla unit. But, as you say they are further down the road on the Islanding Option. It is down to the cost of theses units. I to wait for Prime to contact me now.

In The Netherlands there is a ''Salderen'' law, which allows solar energy owners to convert it back to the grid on the day (i.e. 3000kWh per year) and use the energy from the grid again without extra cost again when the sun is down again: So you can effectively have a 0kWh per year bill without a battery. I hope more countries do this! We can even get the 21% tax back from purchasing solar panels and installation.

Tesla should allow you to set your car up as a mobile powerwall. If you defined what your minimum required range was the remainder of the battery could be used in powerwall mode as a buffer for the house. Then if you ever need to max it out you can run it in full charge mode. Of course once you reach a defined level of power battery size there are no more gains to be had. Being a bit of an obsessive id be very keen to get my array that bit bigger so i could go virtually off grid :)

It seems to me these are the bane of utilities. I always assume utilities make the majority of the megabucks from prime time power sales. If we all load shift with a power wall or similar (I have found a number of others that I like), that larger charge will be gone and those long term power purchase agreements with various gas turbines will still be in place.

In Australia, the Powerwall 2 can be configured to isolate the house from the grid in the event of a blackout. Here is an example, in the Southern State of Victoria close to Ballarat. If you don't touch the circuit breaker, the Powerwall is still connected to the grid. There is no simple method to prevent this.

I guess it has to do with British Health&Safety obsession. In Australia, if an automatic relay cuts you off grid once the grid is down is probably ok. In UK, there might be concerns that automation would fail to do this, and there would be risk of electrocution of grid workers that came to fix it. Or something in those lines.

When you update your power wall I highly recommend you get the power wall off the floor to at least 18 inches of 2 feet off the floor to avoid a heavy rain storm flooding the garage and shorting out the power wall. Better safe than sorry. Thank you for the detailed video on the power wall. Cheers!

Great video. I am in Australia with a Powerwall 2 and 15KW on the roof. The battery changes EVERYTHING and it's honestly one of the best investments I have added to my home. The App obsession is real too :). Payback on the whole system for me will be sub 5 years...... but obviously we get a lot of sun here (generating 82+kw/h per clear day)! :) I also have the off grid/backup option which is AMAZING on the days with our crazy storms. Settings it to reserve 90% for backup means if it's below that charge level it will also top up from grid before the rough weather arrives! Having power when your neighbourhood is down is hilarious! :)

Greetings from California! Just got our Powerwall the other day... ran into an interesting phenomenon... the Gateway decided on two occasions to stop sending power from the Array to the Grid. When I called Tesla to inquire, they said that if utility power is "too low", the gateway will not allow PV power to go to the Grid. Presumably this is related to the hot weather we're having lately... I *did* write our Public Utilities Comission to make sure that our Utility is not trying to "pull a fast one", by intentionally lowering the voltage to avoid having to pay all us micro-generators! ;-)

In India, most homes use 150Ah-200Ah (around 2KWh) lead batteries with 0.5-0.8 KW inverters for power backup. The batteries are charged from the grid and are used to run a few lights and fans when the power fails for a few hours, and the power fails quite often here due to the aging grid and insufficient availability at many places too. Such a setup costs around 200 pounds and the battery (around 140 pounds) needs to be replaced every 5 years or so. While some places are seeing a solar application of this and also bigger grid-tie and off-grid solutions, it still isn't that widespread considering the country receives a good deal of sunshine. Lithium and solar will have a great market here considering power failures and the abundant Sun. Cost-wise, is lead still economical? Going by 2 kWh lead costing around 140 pounds, a 13.4 kWh array would cost 938 pounds and that is 4000 pounds cheaper than the Powerwall. Is 13.4 kWh lead battery same to a 13.4kWh lithium in terms of load and backup hours? Am I missing a calculation here? Sure the lithium battery will last much much longer (at least 2x, may be even 4x), is more supportive of quicker recharges and discharges, Absolutely love the videos, have been following FullyCharged for years, it just is getting better and better. Wish you could upload a new one every day.

Lots of off-grid or rural grid homes in North America already have lead-acid battery set-ups like you described, Suprakash, but Tesla is the first company to go (at mass scale) with lithium batteries for this application. I've wondered why, since lithium has the advantage of being light, which isn't needed for stationery systems. On the other hand, it's also going to take up less space, last longer, and not require H2 gas venting or battery management (e.g. topping up the water levels in lead acid batteries.) On still the other hand, I'd rather see more people buy electric cars or ride electric buses, and continue using lead acid for power backup, so as to avoid a serious shortage of lithium cells on the market! Hard to be sure which way is best!

It will also mean that the power supply will be leveled, so instead of having to build power lines to handle surge times (i.e. daytime air conditioners, and evening with no solar power), the power lines can be built for the average power draw. This will reduce costs, and reduce the need to have expensive peaker plants (plants that pop on quickly but briefly to handle surge demands). Of course, other items would help too, such as ice storage air conditioners (they make either cool air of freeze water to ice, so the power demand is flatter) and multi-hot water tanks (so you use less power at a time, but the heater runs for a longer time period). The goal is to make power demand flatter and more predictable

with an average price of 12 cent per kwh here in the US and the solar with battery installation cost of around 17k after gov rebate, if you use 25kwh/ day like an average us household it would take you more then 15 years just to break even not including battery replacement cost. This is the main problem, it takes forever to pay back you initial investment of the solar panels you buy. Most people don't understand how cheap electricity really is. As an electrical engineer who lived in Phoenix for 17 years, every time I did the math it would take around 20 years to break even on placing solar panels on my roof so I never did it. In my opinion anything over 10 years isn't worth it. Also you need to keep your panels clean. If you have something like a leaf that gets stuck on one panel it will pretty much shut the power production of that panel down.

My estimate for a 6.7 kW system is about $12k after incentives with a break-even after 7 years. The most cost effective installation will minimize excess generation. Batteries are not cost effective. You should only get one if you care about grid health and backup power.

My old PV panels are currently waiting to be installed on a 'new project' which I'll make another show about. They were an anomaly as with so many things in my life. They were part of a deal I did with British Gas back in 2012 when they sponsored Fully Charged for 6 months. I didn't pay for them and didn't get the FIT. Bizarrely and no one knows why, neither did anyone else, British Gas, no one. It has taken nearly a year to sort out this glitch in the bureaucracy but we finally managed so I am now getting the massive 0.04p FIT. Woot.

I’ve seen a couple of other Powerwall videos installed outside and they seem to have the unit on the floor whether indoors or out , not good imho. Should be mounted at least 8 - 12” off the floor. OTOH it weighs over 250 lb as I recollect so that is probably the reason. Why not have it rest on some solid concrete blocks or something.

I can't believe it doesn't work as a backup unit or allow pure night time charging from day one. Why are those so difficult to implement? I would have thought an isolation switch would be standard. That's how commercial UPSes for server rooms have worked for decades. Odd.

Don't know whether it's a UK issue or something that has changed since then, but Powerwall does support islanding backup now. They don't support being fully off-grid (yet; promised) but can be used as a temporary backup when the grid goes down.

Might be a UK thing, in Illinois using a house back-up generator, there is a spring loaded built-in power switching relay in a wall mounted breaker panel. selected house circuits become connected to the generator and the generator is started. When power is turned back on, the relay is turned on, switching power load back to the grid and generator is turned off. These do need to be certified by the power company and local building inspectors at installation.

It *was* a European thing. The powerwall itself doesn't change but there is now a choice of gateway - the box that manages up to 3 powerwalls, with the backup gateway being significantly more expensive and physically larger.

The folks who keep knocking electric cars saying the grid will not cope with the additional charging load should see this. It's obvious from watching the reports on t.v. that they're not aware of this new technology, nor that refining each litre (or maybe gallon, I can't recall which) of petrol consumes 6 kW of electricity. So as electric cars gradually replace ICE cars, electricity used in the refining process reduces and becomes available for car charging. I simply cannot see how the electricity demand situation is a gloomy one.

It's a very much possible. Residential wind turbines are very good solutions where sunshine isn't available. 70% from turbines and 30% from solar will solve the issues. And wind blows 24/7 even during the night, so charging batteries/or Tesla charging can happen without losses at night time.

Old EV car batteries car be 'recycled' into home batteries like these.. then when no longer required at all, Lithium in the batteries can be recycled nowadays and no doubt by the end of the life cycle this process will become more common place.

agylub so 8-10 years use in a car, then 10-20 years use in a home (Watch the latest video of this happening) then the lithium (plus the cobalt and nickel) can be recycled, it is pretty limited the number of companies doing it just now but I’d imagine in 18 or so years they will have pretty much expanded to every major area. Plenty of places doing it in the US, China and Europe already though. Many of those using renewable energy as a power source for the process.

The Smart Grid replaces Economy 7. If the energy companies end up paying more than they want to, they'll install their own batteries. They will control how much they pay you. If Norsk Hydro has a better price, then that is who they will buy from. With all that demand being generated by electric and plug in hybrid cars, upwards is the only direction for electricity prices. It may even be cheaper to go off grid for electricity and use gas generation, household CHP. PT for DHW, and CH balance. I can get a garage mechanic to come out for £40 an hour, so an annual service is the only overhead, maybe £200? A Supercharger for the car, just fire up the generator on demand. A modest Powerwall, to save cycling the generator at low demand times, and to cover start up. Then every watt of PV has the same value.

I figured for a 5.950 sq ft house running 1 5 ton ac unit and pool filter pump, with electric hot water heater, using 20kw solar panels on a sun tracker system, I would need 4 of these Tesla Powerwall batteries. $22,000.00 dollars to run off the grid in case of power outage. Dang. It would be money well spent. When power is back on..would be sending bunches back to the grid. Brilliant! Nice video. Cheers.

Just priced mine up £6-8k for solar panels, £5.5k for powerwall over the 20 year life span I will only lose £3-3.5k. Think I'll wait until it is cheaper or more efficient. Don't forget our energy usage is dropping year on year. Now using LED lights, energy efficient TV's, cold fill low energy washer, master socket switches so no standby on nights etc.

In the event of a power failure your not allowed to use your power wall 2 to power your home. Power company BS pardon my language. Simply think what would be installed if you has a gas or diesel standby generator installed. The electrician would install a transfer switch which would select which power source to power your home, power failure on the grid? No problem the transfer switch would select the ( generator I.E. the powerwall 2 by disconnecting you from the grid and powering the entire home from the power wall 2 ) the transfer switch would only operate to separate your home from the grid to prevent power from going to the grid in the event of a grid power failure.
