I have one of these and have used it daily for the past couple of years. There is much that I like about this grinder, but I find that it jams too easily, especially with the medium roast beans that I use most often. I am fine grinding for espresso, and especially if there are more than a few spoonfuls of beans in the hopper, the motor is not strong enough to reliably grind without jamming. More brittle, darker roast beans are less likely to cause jams. When the grinder jams, I have to unplug it, tip it up to empty the beans into a bowl, and use the handle of a teaspoon to clear the jam and get the burr mechanism moving again. I chose this model of grinder because I wanted something quieter that wouldn’t wake other people in the house if used early in the morning, but in retrospect-taking into account the lighter roasts I favour-I think I should have gone with one of Eureka’s other models with a more powerful motor.

1/4 turn to see a difference? Hardly. I need to nudge it a tiny fraction to keep my shot time within the window. A quarter turn would make the difference between no flow and 30g in 10s. I like the espresso I get from it, but the knob is not its best feature - it's too small and too sensitive. I was sold on the low noise aspect and I have no regrets. Quiet is good.

In short. I'm an absolute newbie when it gets to coffee I just know that I like it so I've been looking at videos on grinders and espresso machines. Will this grinder satisfy my filter coffee and espresso needs because I do still enjoy a good filter coffee.
@AlternativeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will. There may be some initial period of getting used to grind settings - going back and forwards - but you won't have any problems getting a good grind from this - I assume you'd be single dosing ? - if so - perhaps at the same time - or later on - getting the Bellows system for this grinder would assist greatly in Zero Retention.
@sarahdeschene3152 Жыл бұрын
Seriously considering this for purchase. The only concern I have is using lighter roast beans. I saw some comments regarding jamming. Any thoughts. I’ve been using light roast Ethiopian a lot lately and it’s tough to hand grind. One reason I’m finally breaking down and investing in an another counter top appliance.
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
Yes, jamming is an issue - more so - the grounds don't move down so easily and get caught up in the chute for super light roast beans. It's an issue you'll discover with many grinders I'm afraid. Grinders are not made with light roast coffee in mind - rather well developed espresso and filter beans. These lighter roast coffees, at fine grind settings and larger doses - can really place a lot of stress on a grinder. Keep this in mind when purchasing one. Look to the power ratio of wattage and torque - as these will point out how truly powerful the motor is at turning the burrs against the light roast beans.

Haha yeah screw that fancy display. I splurged on the matt version with a little bit of chrome, the one in the video I think. BTW on etsy you can find lots of people selling single dose mods (bellows, tiny hopper and even an inclined stand). I plan on single dosing so the screen would be wasted anyway. But it does look really nice.

I am a bit scared of the relativel small and coarsely marked wheel for the grinding size. Isn't it difficult to fine-tune your grinding size here, especially after switching between different settings?
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
Yes, not recommended for Filter and espresso brewing regularly. But between different espresso, it's not too hard, and you become accustomed to a range.

@alternativebrewing received my grinder from AB last week - I’ve seen videos about dialing in the grinder which imply that the ‘2’ setting isn’t really 2 - do you have a set-up and use video you would recommend ? Thanks.
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thanks for reaching out to us. When you mean the 2 isn't really 2 - forgive me as I'm a little lost with that statement. The 2 is just a reference point for a grind size, naturally 3 will grind coarser beans and 1 will grind finer than 2. What's important for dialling in is taking note of the reference point and ensuring you move the grind adjuster int he right direction to get the flow rate in teh espresso you're aiming for. In this case - if your coffee is pourting out too slow - then coursening it up from 2, to perhaps 2.5 or 3 maybe get you better results - or vice versa. So begin with any grind size - 2 or 3 is a good bet - and see how the coffee flows - ensuring all other aspects to the espresso preparation are met. Then - considering how that espresso went - make an adjustment in the grind size and make another. When dialing in a bag of coffee beans - it's unlikely you'll hit the right grind size, the first shot. In which case, you can continue to make consecutive changes to the grind size and brew back to back shot until you get the recipe right - or if you get close enough on the first or second try - the perhaps make that last adjustment and come back the following day, and so forth - to eventuate at the intended recipe - rather than discarding many shots in the process. I hope this info helps 🫶 If there's anything more I can help with, let me know
@angusarmour7115 Жыл бұрын
@@AlternativeBrewing thanks. This video I reviewed was essentially saying 0 isn’t 0 , when the burrs first connect it’s 0 - but I honestly don’t know if that matters if everything is relative. I will try as you say; for a double shot out of a Silvia I should be looking at a grind that pours in about 26 seconds or so?

Hi, will the fork on this hold a bottomless portafilter for hands free grinding? Thanks
@AlternativeBrewing3 ай бұрын
Not exactly not - it's not a cradle - and whilst forks can hold bottomless - the portafilter often vibrates off and creates a mess everywhere if grinding hands-free. This would be best holding the portafilter - or you could use a dosing cup and achieve hands-free this way - but again not entirely reliable.

What is the main difference between Silenzio and Manuale? I just bought a Lelit PL82 and now I need a grinder and I am in between this 2 from Eureka.
@AlternativeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
Silenzio is the better grinder - having the body of the grinder using noise-dampening material to make the grinder overall - much quieter - plus it has TIMED DOSING - where you can adjust the time it takes to grind a full dose out - as opposed to the MANUALE which will only grind out once you press the button under the forks.

Trying to find a comparison of this to the Sette 270. Any thoughts? I am most interested in espresso quality and do an occasional pour over or areopress. Very rarely French Press, but do like that option as well. I definitely want a timer option and will not consider without. Also this grinder’s $479 price would be my threshold.
@AlternativeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
I guess the main difference - and it's a big one - is the noise - well actually the build quality too 😀 But the Silenzio is very quiet and solidly built with a metal housing - whereas the Sette 270 is all plastic and quite loud. Burrs are smaller on the Sette andconicall vs Flat Bur. Personally, I prefer Flat Burr for any filter styles of coffee - so my choice would be with the Eureka
