Few people will be surprised if Casement Park and indeed Northern Ireland's inclusion in this is dropped before 2026. Northern Ireland has a long a glorious history of dysfunctional organisation, poor governance and public negativity scuppering plans. A plan for a 40,000 capacity multi sport stadium and entertainment complex fell apart due to public negativity to the plan. One main objection was that it was supposedly too far from Belfast city centre, despite the fact it would have been closer than Wembley is to Trafalgar Square! Other similar plans that routinely happen in the rest of the UK and Ireland have also failed in the last 25 years. Haven tried twice to build a holiday park there but pulled out both times citing that it was simply too difficult to work with local objections and obstacles. NI remains the only part of the islands without a National Park, despite it's immense beauty. Yep, yet again people can't agree on what would be the simplest of things elsewhere. And three times, consortiums have come to Northern Ireland with the plans for a theme park and quickly withdrawn again after speaking with the locals.

The national stadium was blocked by unionist politicians because it was on the site of the maze prison where the hunger strike by republican prisoners occured which they considered terrorists and didn't want the stadium becoming a site for commemoration of those events,it had very little to do with the distance to the city centre.As regards theme parks not sure what went happened there or the national parks

Casement parks principle use will be for Gaelic football and Hurling,though the requirements for its use as a venue for the EUROS means that will be alseater for the tournament and more expensive to build but will still have a huge GAA pitch which means fans will be a good bit away from the Action when its used for soccer.

@@thesmithersyWell leaving aside the thinly veiled sectarianism ie proper football it is a white elephant even in terms of GAA as one of the main reasons its being built is for the ulster final which is not as important as it was due to changes in championship structure

Anfield: pitch size does not meet UEFA requirements. Old Trafford: is falling down. Celtic Park: lacking facilities and SFA wanted their matches to be played at their national stadium. Emirates: Not as good as Spurs Stadium, and they didnt want too many stadiums in London. It's actually quite understandable if you think for 5 seconds about it.

Man Utd asked not to be included as they weren't sure if they would be upgrading the stadium at the same time. Everton's old home of Anfield can't be used as the pitch dimensions do not conform to modern international standards.

Dont think Casement Park will happen unfortunately. A 50k stadium in Belfast seems just too big and unnecessary. Maybe if people were more realistic and went for a 30k seated stadium rather than 50k it would be a lot less expensive and much better suited to its location. Rail seating could be installed and removed when needed which would increase capacity significantly although UEFA do require all-seated stadiums for their competitions.
