Lovely video! Here's some extra history most westerners don't know: The atrocities in WWII is what happens when Germans believe the Polish, Polish Jews, and Slavs [all one and the same back then] are beneath them, which they believed for centuries and this is taught culturally... The Germanization of Poland started with Prussia instigating the 18th century partitions when Poland-Lithuania was by far the most tolerant country in the world. A danger to the HRE power. Bismarck and Frederik both detested Polish culture and Hitler was no different---the holocaust wasn't anti-Jewish, it was anti-Polish. Anti-Polish pro-German propaganda is the best foreign influence in the English speaking world through German ministry of culture funded history research to paint them in a better light in the west's "best" universities and through film/Hollywood. Now you know.@@HeresGoodTravel

@@HeresGoodTravel My first trip to Poland was as a result of, she who must be obeyed, wishing to go to a Jake Bug concert and the London one being sold out. DId a quick search and found him in Warsaw with tickets spare and dates we could make. We managed the whole trip giving us five glorious days in Warsaw and in a five start hotel just outside the city walls for less than the trip and a one night stay in a London hotel = no competition. We've been wed 37 years now and though she was born in NY and raised in FL I imported her to the UK on a livestock licence about 32 years ago. She's now a British citizen and loves roaming Europe at every opportunity. I think that and the cats are only reason she keeps me around - I pick great off the beaten path places, feed and deflea the cats - It's my only way of staying useful. She's a purebred Sicilian NY beauty and I do whatever it takes to remain alive. A travel tip for you. Netherlands - Utrecht. Leave Schipol airport go down the stairs onto the train platforms. Take the train to Utrecht. If my memory serves me right it's 20-30 mins on the train. Beautiful bite sized city with excellent train and bus links to no end of equally lovely little spots. You don't really need to bother with a car. Amersfoort, Delft, Haarlem to name a few. Last one for fear of being boring. Fly to Pisa - stay one night and do the tower thing. (Pisa has little to offer other than this) Hire a car and use Lucca as the centre of your itinerary. If there's a lovelier town on this planet I've yet to find it. From there you can get the train to Florence for a day trip and use the car for the likes of Sienna (lovely) and Volterra (the boss's favourite spot) I'll leave it at that, you are more than capable of finding your own little favourite haunts. I lied - I'll throw in another one - Dresden and Meissen and right down to the Polish and Czech borders with no end of fortified towns (Germany is beautiful if a little expensive nowadays)

One historical note. Gdańsk was thoughtlessly destroyed by Red Army soldiers after the capitulation of the city. The city was demolished, plundered, people killed, women raped. Other cities suffered a similar fate. The same thing is happening in Ukraine today. The mentality of the Russian armies and methods of operation have been unchanged for centuries. The word złoty - golden is an adjective of the word gold - złoto.

Sorry, but what you said about the reconstruction of Gdansk after the WW2 is not correct. Yes, the city has been destroyed in the war in something like 90%. And yes, it was a predominantly german-speaking town until 1945 but for the most time of its existence it was under the Polish crown, a main trading point for the Polish-Lithuanian Kingdom. It was under German rule for some 120 years as a part of a Prussian province and there was not Swedish or French influeance in the architecture but mostly Flemmisch, as the most important architect of the town was Abraham van den Blocke. That´s why german, polish, jewish, scottish and dutch merchants streamed into what used to be Danzig back then. Danzig was also one of the official reasons why Hitler started the war against Poland in 1939 (actually first shots of WW II were fired in Danzig) as he claimed Danzing to be a German town and wanted to incorporate it into the Reich. According to the Treaty of Potsdam Danzig came under Polish administration after the war and the communist authorities decided to reconstruct it in the style of Danzig´s heyday as a jewel of the Polish crown in the 16th to 18th century taking old paintings, drawings and plans from that time as guides for the reconstruction. Most of the facades of the old buildings have been rebuild almost the same shape they were before the WW II, but the houses accommodate modern state of the art appartments from the 50ies and 60ies.

Swedish architecture? There has never been anything like Swedish architecture! Medieval architecture has always had its roots and influences from Byzantium, Italy and France. The most outstanding architects of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance were always Italians and French. Sweden at that time was a very primitive country. Nothing was created there and all culture and architecture was imported from Italy and France because these countries were cultural powers at that time! People without basic education cannot know this!

One thing I would complain about in this video is that well... I know all those places and you kinda missed out on the authentic Polish food. I mean you can get thai food everywhere, the food hall also has a lot of variety on what they offer BUT: for the real experience I'd recommend going to the so called 'milk bars' that serve affordable food (kinda like diners in the US). SInce you were in the city center the go to place would be 'Bar Turystyczny' - there is always a long line in front of it for a reason. Another place would be 'Pyra Bar' that specializes in dishes made from potatoes (yum!) or Mandu that is a place that serves amazing pierogi (without the s at the end as it is already plural). Those places would give you a more authentic and local cuisine. I mean come on, you are in Poland and you go for Thai and Indian food (that you can get everywhere) when you can try schabowy, pierogi or kompot? naaah.

When I was a child 3 or 4 years old I used to walk with my grandma streets of Gdansk. That was in the very early 60. Was this tiny little restaurant serving dish called MORZDRZEKS PO ZYDOWSKU. What's a calf's brain stirred Fry with chives. Single most delicate dish ever. Unfortunately extremely high in cholesterol. ONLY in Gdansk

What, did I hear that right ? You paid 7 USD for a 40 min BOLT ride ? There is absolutely no way that anybody in their right mind would drive you 40 minutes for 7 USD especially with gas/petrol being very expensive in Poland. That is like saying, I bought a Big Mac at Mc Donald in the States in 2023 for a dollar,...yeah, no such thing. I've been to Gdansk and the Tricity area twice, once in 2012 and then again in 2019 and even a cab in 2012 from the Gdansk Airport to Grand Cru hotel located in the old town of Gdansk with a shorter than 40 min drive, was several times more than what you supposedly paid, and that was 11 years ago with Poland in general being much, much cheaper then, than it is now. I know that BOLT/UBER is chaper than regular taxi but stil the doesn't differ that much. BTW, when travelling in Poland by train I wouldn't recommend taking the budget TLK intercity train especially in the summer as they do not have AC, they are overcrowded and generally have old carriages. Spend a bit more and take the regular PKP Intercity train or even Premium Intercity train as they are still quite cheap especially in comparison to Western European countries.

We had an awesome time visiting Poland and Gdańsk just might have been our favorite city we saw. Just looked it up and google says the estimated drive from GDN to old town center is about 34 minutes and a bolt ride is 53 Zloty which is about $13 USD. We were lucky to find a promo code for bolt and we’re given a credit bringing the price down to about $7 bucks USD. On our trip around the world we almost exclusively rode public transit to save money but this was a splurge that was definitely worth it. Thanks so much for watching.

I just checked in the Bolt app. The trip from the Gdańsk airport to the city center (entrance to the Old Town) was priced at PLN 20, i.e. $4.75. The Uber app showed a higher price - $9.

@@HeresGoodTravelYou don't have to apologise, it IS affordable to you and it IS relatively cheaper than typical European destinations such as Italy or France, or Scandinavia which you mentioned. And there's nothing wrong in stating the obvious. Even if it may have sounded slightly off for some of us, Poles, a quick reflection on the topic and context of the video should be enough for us to understand you meant no harm and you are NOT responsible for some of us not earning as much as others. 😉 In comparison Vietnam, Thailand or some of the Balkan countries are really cheap for us, even though they may not be for the locals. "Old town" is a confusing term in regards of Gdanks: there actually are more of larger apartments block. What is mostly shown in the video is the Rechtsstadt und Speicherinsel. The Rechtsstadt has modern apartments behind historic or historical style facades. The buildings on Speicher-Island were even built after the fall of communism.
