📜 Europe's First Crusade - Part 6 - Extra History
The Crusaders now held Antioch, but not securely. The Turks still control the citadel atop the mountain and had a massive army coming to reinforce them. The situation grew worse when Stephen of Blois deserted from the Crusades, and told the Byzantine reinforcements not to bother: he believed Antioch would fall immediately. Now entirely on their own, the Crusaders held the wall in constant vigil until a mystic named Peter Bartholomew claimed to have received a vision from Saint Andrew. Guided by his vision, he discovered metal which he claimed to be the holy lance of Longinus - nevermind that the church already had the holy lance in its possession. Though the Crusade leaders had doubts, the soldiers were inspired so they launched an assault on the Turkish armies. Surprisingly, they won the day: the Turks did not fully support their leader, Kerbogha, and many took the Crusade counter-attack as an excuse to abandon the siege. Bohemond now kept Antioch, while Raymond of Toulouse - after the disastrous Siege of Maarat led the soldiers to commit acts of cannabalism - took the remains of the army south to Jerusalem. His attempt to capture a small city called Arqa along the way almost fractured the crusade army again, and did lead to the death of Peter Bartholomew. They arrived in Jerusalem to find the local wells poisoned, giving them no choice but to attack the city head-on. After days of intense fighting, they won their way inside the walls and began a massive slaughter of the people who still lived inside Jerusalem - the Christian population had been expelled, leaving only Muslims and Jews still in the city. And thus, with Antioch and Jerusalem both in crusader hands, the First Crusade came to an end.

The more I see this series, the more sympathy I have for Tancred. Dude did actually play by the rules, used a convenient and bilateral subterfuge to take a city and limit bloodshed, tried his best to abate a massacre in this context, albeit the victims being from a different faith... I do think his actions were commendable in that particular context.

Tancred (and Bohemond) was a Norman from the Kingdom of Norman Sicily. Where Muslims, Jews and Orthodox Christrains ruled by "Catholic" Norman Mercenaries, lived together in peace. The Normans, dispite being catholic, didn't really care too much for religion (they were basically still just French speaking Vikings). Just a few years before this they went to war against the Pope and captured and imprisoned the Pope...for months. Bohemond merely saw the Crusades as an opportunity to take Constantinople and make himself Byzantine Emperor (he had kinda come close a decade before). Anyway, this new plan didn't go as planned.

This was both the funniest and the most depressing Extra History miniseries yet, which are two impressive achievements. I mean, they only kept Antioch because the Turks were almost as kneecapped by infighting as they were, and because some delusional priest lied his ass off. Then they stop wasting time in Arqa because the priest goes all Ninth Gate on himself. And then the Crusaders go on to do what people always do when fighting for a Noble Cause: slaughter those weaker than themselves. I just have one question: those Genoese ships that arrived? Who were they, why were they there, and why did they agree to dismantle their ships to aid the crusaders? Has Genoa even been mentioned in this series thus far?

+Rabbit Cube You can read more about their involvement here (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Genoa) but basically they helped during the siege of Antioch and the siege of Jerusalem. They were involved with the crusade from the start, but as they were a relatively small (though rich and influential) Italian city-state, they didn't contribute a huge amount of men. Their ships were instrumental though.

+Rabbit Cube Genoa around the time had more influnce in the mediterranean sea then ANYONE else even venice couldnt match their power. but ofcourse their empire went down. infact if you play EU4 as Genoa all those random missions to take provinces like gibraltar or alexandria are actually there for a reason you see genoa used to own those provinces and they used to be the byzantines best buds. ofcourse all good things come to and end eventually and they lost their overseas territories slowly over time untill they had only become a husk of their former empire

Jokes asides, actually crusading more could have prevented this It's the leaders personal ambitions and having to decide who gets what that dragged down all this for months. Lesser knights and civilian pilgrims had to pressure them on focusing on the holy mission, and even blackmailed Raymond to do so by destroying the walls of a city he wanted for himself So remember kids, whenever you're hungry, it's only because you're not crusading hard enough

Also... going to Jerusalem twice without actually besiging or assaulting it and trying to do some shady backdoor dealings with Saladin surely doesnt count as 'nearly taking it' at least by my book ;)

My History professors always told me that there are always at least two sides to every story, and history is 100% about perspective. Something that seems evil or unreasonable from the outside may seem righteous and justified from another angle. In history, *no one is truly good or evil,* because *everyone thinks they're doing the right thing.* It *ALL* depends on how you look at it, and whose struggles you focus on.

Even the slightest examination of the "massacre" at Jerusalem shows that it it was completely or almost completely hyperbole. Anybody wanna do the math? 231 cubic inches to a gallon, less than two gallons of blood in one person, ankle-deep running at least three inches high--if the streets were eight feet wide (a tiny street), and every drop of blood had been drained out of every victim, and every victim was a large adult male, and the street was perfectly level, you'd still need more people than Jerusalem had in it. Other accounts held that blood ran up to the horse's bridles, making it even more ridiculous.
@LuccianoBartolini
@LuccianoBartolini 8 жыл бұрын
I understand if you see the Crusaders as mass murderers, and you're right, they were, but remember that their morale was low (probably to the point of depression), they were probably low on food, no wells means that there is a chance that for those 2 days of assault before opening the doors they could have succumbed to thirst for the lack of water, I mean, just try to imagine assaulting that city for 2 days under the heat, with no well nearby to refresh yourself and while wearing those chain mails that were VERY heavy, there is a very high chance that by the time they entered they were close to be psychotic, delusional or totally nuts, they had to be to ignore a flag from one of the princes and slaughter innocent civilians. Remember how 2 episodes back these guys made an Iron wall to protect the civilians from the turks, that was at the beggining of the crusade, by this point the man that made that Iron wall was having its own city and the religious leader was dead, heck, they won in Anthioch by sheer desperation and hunger. And I'm not trying to justify them or excuse them, but think about it, if you were there and were under the very same conditiond they were (Depression, Hunger, Thirst, Despair and whatever Psychological illness they could have gotten by this time) HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD HAVE ACTED?
