Yes, it's a pity, that the Schengen treaty is not really in force anymore. Me and my husband haven't been checked on any border yet, although he doesn't look like a European at all, because he is black. But due to the very different policies regarding refugees, all countries like to close their borders and check. Actually, some people have been caught trying to illegally crossing borders, it hasn't served much regarding safety, because all EU countries are very safe anyway. And those (few) troublemakers are already within our borders, anyway. Good that you are traveling a bit outside of Slovenia. It's a beautiful country, but quite small. Should you ever want to come to Germany and the area of Cologne, just drop a note. Raising money for Sea Sheperd is a good idea.

In America people often say, "I'm going to Europe." Europe is not a country, but a union with mostly sovereign countries (except EU rules), languages, traditions, etc. I live 40km from the Netherlands and every time I go there I notice that I am in a different country and a guest! In the USA I can imagine that when you fly from Illinois to California you have the feeling you are in a completely different country, but when you see the US flag there, English-speaking people, more or less the same system (street signs, post office, whatever else) then you no longer feel like a stranger. America is a country, Europe is not a country!! And if I may also give my own critical opinion, the EU was good when it consisted of 12 countries! Wealthy, everyone had the same values, etc. Today, with the eastward expansion, the EU has lost its value! As a prominent personality once said, if Germany takes in half of Calcutta, then Germany will become Calcutta! Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and Hungary do not belong in the EU family because these countries are very poor and we have millions of poverty migrants from these countries who are destroying our social system! Apart from Ukrainians and Syrians! And I am not a racist, I am a migrant myself! This is my honest, critical opinion!

Not all of the countries having joined the EU have been to its advantage, true. But Calcutta hasn't joined! Especially the three Baltic republics, which I have visited last June, are very welcome. They are a true enrichment and actually seem to share more of the traditional European values than are now present in Germany. Look how clean everything is, no garbage on the streets, all parks well-kept, the people friendly and respectful (even to strangers) and working more ambitious than I have seen here lately. Those leaning to the nationalist side and trying to become more Russian-friendly and tending to become authoritarian (again, like in Soviet times) are actually somewhat problematic.
