There's something wonderful about books in other languages, isn't there!? One of my dreams is to one day live in a house where the bookshelves are full of all sorts of weird books in different languages with different writing systems, and to be able to read them all (at the moment, I've got a little collection of the books... but not the skills :P) For language books, I tend to see if I can get lucky in charity shops because it's so much cheaper than getting them new. It's very hit-and-miss what languages come up, but if you're patient you can stumble across some quite interesting languages and things. I live in Manchester in the UK though, so it's quite a multicultural and student-filled city anyway - I think you'd have more trouble with this method if you lived in the countryside.

I find that reading books in other languages on kindle is awesome because of the built in dictionaries. My kindle came with ~30 dictionaries for free and in many different languages. You just highlight the word you don't know the meaning of and it shows you the definition. Very handy when you're reading something that you don't know a good amount of words like Abigail's Percy Jackson book. Also, I second the bookdepository comment. Great store.

I'd really love something like this for apple devices, I use an ipad as an ereader instead of an actual kindle or nook. Currently I'm stuck with learning with texts and paper dictionaries and books, but hey it's a start! -Abigail

Wow, Matt! Both Polish and Russian? I hope You will find it interesting. Just a word of warning- do not start both at the same time, since you can get confused about the gender of nouns. Nouns in both are very similar but usually if a noun in Polish has female gender in Russian it can have masculine gender. It was my childhood nightmare, so just so You know what to expect. Polish has more irregularities in grammar yet Russian is softer, more melodic but dynamic accent makes it more difficult than Polish when it comes to pronounciation. As for "we went for 4 books, came back with 29 books" - you guys have so much in common with my humble self in this regard. Looks like travveling and Europe had good influecne on both of You, You both look so fresh faced, glowing and handsome in this video. Seriously. I have never used Assimil myself, so I will be waiting for Your review of this series. You've made me really curious. My friend is learning japanese now, so it would be nice to find out what Assimil has to offer to japanese learners. Matt, should You need native speaker help with Polish- do let me know. I must admit I'm curious what is inside Assimil book for learners of Polish.

Abigail, about your Swedish reader series published in Germany: You can try to find the book you already have online (maybe on the publisher's website) and learn what other books are in the series. Select one. If possible, try to find its ISBN. Then see if AbeBooks has it. If not, try other stores such as Amazon US and Amazon Germany. But sometimes some books in a series go out of print faster than others, so chances are you'll be able to order a couple more in that series, but maybe not all of them.

Amazing that you are learning dutch, I am a native speaker and I think it might be a bit harder than norwegian because of the verb conjugations and it is easier than german because there are no cases, Probably there is just one thing that people find hard about Dutch and that is the pronunciation of "the hard g" but I still wish you much Luck learning it and the other languages you guys learn 😊

It does explain grammar points in a really simple way though. En ja, leer Nederlands Matt!

Abigail, I have in digital form entire set of Rivstart A1+A2. It's really good too, although listenings are very fast, but also very close to how in reality the Swedish is spoken. While in Sweden I had obligatory textbook series "Pa vei", so I have digital copy of this as well. I also have great resources from Polish publishers, sadly for learners of Polish- one is kind of Teach Yourself in one book starter- by the publishing house Wydawnictwo Literackie -"Ucz się sam (teach yourself).Język Szwedzki dla początkujacych (swedish language for beginners)" and I also have two books -Troll 1 and Troll 2 which are strictly on Swedish grammar. Both have separate booklet with answer key for exercises.I wouldn't mind sharing my own resources with You somehow if You had problems finding the rest of the series for this exercise book that You bought in Europe. I also wish Troll series was translated into English since it's a very decent course of Swedish grammar.I also have one book written by a Polish lady living for over 20 years in Sweden, but I don't have it at hand at the moment since it's at my parent's house.But I could get it as well. And this lady sells it over internet if I recall correctly. I think shipping overseas is available, I'm just not sure if also to USA. It's also a single "teach yourself book" with audio CD.

It will be a long time before I get around to it but I've always been intrigued with slavic languages! AND THE PERCY JACKSON BOOKS WERE *SO MUCH BETTER* THAN THE MOVIES. And thank you so much for the recommendation!
@andymounthood7 жыл бұрын
@Matt, the second Percy Jackson movie (Sea of Monsters) is one of my favorite movies, so I'm sure I'll really love the novels (which I plan to read in Spanish, after I read enough easier fiction to be able to read them without having to use dictionaries a lot). @Angela, I'm finding that since Japanese and Korean are both massive (and similar) projects, it works well to stick with either one for as long as possible. Then, when you feel burnout or a loss of motivation, switch to the other until the same thing happens to it, and just go back and forth. For example, I'm motivated to study Japanese now, so my Korean is on hold. But a couple of weeks ago I needed a break from Japanese, so I was studying Korean instead.
@PassionforDreaming7 жыл бұрын
Andy Roberts As long as I don't confuse myself I may try! It's hard for me because I got in the habit of sticking to one language. I used to switch back and forth when I started studying languages, but that didn't work well for me =(
@andymounthood7 жыл бұрын
Angela, in that case, I'm looking forward to hearing more of your updates on your Korean studies. Of course, you're currently finishing up your 90-day Duolingo Polish challenge, so your Korean is on hold. As for me, I'm trying to keep my rotations at 3 months or longer between what another polyglot called "easily confusable languages" (in my case, Korean/Japanese, Spanish/French, and surprisingly German/Russian). But when my motivation drops, just a couple days of the other language are sometimes enough to bring my motivation back. This is what happened to me recently between Japanese and Korean. I was burned out of kanji study, so I thought I wanted to study 3 months of Korean and come back to the Japanese. But then, when I tried switching to Korean, I found I actually wanted to continue the Japanese--just not the kanji. So I'm focusing on Japanese grammar now.
