That’s why the G-League option is way better than the regular US college system too, and it should be expanded somehow. Scoot is definitely going to be more prepared for the NBA, because he was against guys literally playing for an NBA job. His defense in his first G-League games compared to his last 15, is like an NBA rookie compared to a 3yr vet.

@@cjwrench07there’s nothing to do with college ball or g league smh. It’s about how USA player develop. When ur players played hero basketball from their childhood to the end of high school, they r already used to that way, it’s difficult to change after 18 years old. That’s why USA players don’t know how to play team basketball. For Kobe, Lebron, KD, they dominated fiba cuz they r too good. Our US players are so focused on the tangibles, the strength, height, wing span, vertical jump etc while the best players are who they are because of the intangibles. @@jarrettthomas4865 Well, if you take football/soccer, i’m not even sure it translates to better statistics. Messi, Zidane, Iniesta, Kanté, Busquets, Xavi, Neymar, R9 aren’t freaks of nature by any stretch of the imagination (although some of them have unique physical abilities). Haaland or Cristiano fit that definition though. Athleticism seems to make less of a difference in Football than technical ability, vision, decision making, precision, etc. Although being fast, strong, explosive, and jumping high always helps, obviously. Messi would probably never have been drafted if Football/Soccer functioned like an American sport.

I agree that American basketball talent is generally better, mostly because the game has been evolving for much longer over here. But the European system is so much better when it comes to actually developing young talent. They have dedicated academies that players attend just for basketball. These academies scout kids from all over the continent. They function as full time boarding schools typically affiliated with professional teams, and they have specialists who give each kid a personalized training regimen after evaluating that kid's strengths, weaknesses, physiology, psychology, etc. Students also have constant access to nutritionists, state of the art workout equipment, and equally elite peers, among other things. Since the academies are usually affiliated with actual teams, they'll have junior teams for different age groups (U18, U17, U16), and select kids to take part in matches with the youth teams when they become good. The really good ones get selected for the senior teams. Since everybody's constantly competing with everyone else, it creates a pretty cutthroat atmosphere. This system is borrowed from the same academy system used in European football (y'know, the type of system that developed guys like Messi, Ronaldo, Haaland, and Mbappe). I'd argue that the academy system is half the reason a lot of European players have managed to catch up to American players in terms of capability. It's a lot more effective at developing players than high school/AAU/NCAA. Luka Doncic was a student of Real Madrid's youth academy, and just look at how good he is. This is implausible, but if NBA teams followed the European model and created youth academies with junior teams, our player development would skyrocket.

During the 80s and before that here in the States, though we never had a structured academy system like they do overseas, we used to be drilled in fundamentals by even our PE Teachers and there were a series of basketball camps to attend to improve your game. Furthermore we had full freedom to play pick up games with and against much older and more experienced players. That was why when the NBA was considered an illegal league by FIBA and only allowed NCAA players to compete in the World Cup and the Olympics, which always made them the youngest team in those tournaments, used to dominate the much older and experienced teams and most of the college players at the time stayed 3-4 years in college. The closest thing to one-in-done players were guys who stayed 2 years until they were eligible for a hardship NBA draft. This is exactly what the members of the original Dream Team were products of. Compared to what we have now, what we had was much better for player development. Considering the resources that we have now, I think the best thing (this is ONLY my opinion) is if the NBA doesn't want to do the academy system like in Europe and other parts of the world, to have the NBA teams select the best travel so-called AAU teams (within the NBA team's geographic location)under their wings and control the player development, where and when to compete, control the number of games they should play to reduce the wear and tear of their bodies. For instance, the Boston Celtics would take the BABC AAU teams under their wing, the Knicks would run the Gauchos, the Rens and the Riverside Hawks and the Bulls run Mac Irvin Fire etc.

They'll never adopt an academy system because the colleges need that money but this would actually be a great way to make something similar to an academy system that would be implementable, the NBA teams could provide professional coaching for players at a young age, but I think the only way the NBA teams would actually be motivated to take it seriously is if they had some kind of special rights to these players at the draft or a different kind of reward for the amount of NBA talents they develop, otherwise they'd feel like they're helping to develop talent for their rivals, maybe some kind of rule that you have the draft rights to players outside the top 20 if they were developed in one of the colleges under your wing or something like that, but I can't think of a smart and practical way that would work rn.

Luka first instincts are the fundamentals over athleticism. Here, it's athleticism. College HC here look for the most athletic players and believe they can coach them on fundamentals. Does not work, though. Kentucky under John Calipari would always have the best players/draft class. Then, teams that were together longer within their school program would beat them in the tourney.

The problem is the gap in athleticism fools a lot of people. The euroleague plays better basketball. The NBA and America breeds better athletes. When’s the last time you can remember a guy coming out of college as a top 2 pick because of his decision making and fundamentals? Maybe the 90s? I’m out in Paris right now. It’s the culture. In some ways, its stifling, but in most its freeing. There’s no focus on stardom, no sacrificing the team to be the #1. Everything they do out here seems to be about synergy, making everyone’s life easier if you have the option-and its not even so much out of generosity as it is the expectation. It feels like the richer areas of the South. Manners, precocious maturity, and family/team mentality. It’s really cool to see and I bet it has a lot to do with this.

The problem is basically the NBA, just create an actual basketball organization in every city. Imagine you can start ur journey at a “Golden State Warriors school” Play their and show off your talent at the age of 15-16 and then get invited to the first men team. If you are not that talented at 16, they send you to a second men team which is in the G-League and you then build up your skills there, while practicing with people ur age and older. Kick 14 and 15 seed teams out of the league and replace them with the regular season 1 and 2 seed from the G league.

No disrespect but no. European play style does not look like NBA play style. Your offense is kinda stagnated. Most of plays on the NBA have 2 guys on the weak side doing nothing and waiting to get an open 3. If you do that in Europe you get your soul yelled out of your body by the coach. You won't just wait for the ball, you run for it. You cut, screen, fake cut, run, switch, pass, dribble hand off, whatever. You are not allowed to stay in the same spot more than 1 or 2 seconds bc defenders catch up. Our courts are smaller, it's easier to defend 1 pass away. The closets thing I've ever saw to European basket was when coach Ettore Mesina was assistant of coach Popovich. That .5 principle: half a second to shoot, pass or dribble, then you move. You put a lot of cross court pressure, Spanish pick and roll and all that. That's nice, your court is bigger, you don't need that much of movement. Your defense sistems are also more focused on 1vs1 and you are kind enough to let your rival cross the court before making serious pressure on the ball. We run full court defense and during a game we can switch from various defense sistems just so the rival has to figure them out and adapt. That's why Luka, Jokic and Giannis say it's easier to score in the NBA.

European players have the advantage, it's pretty obvious to me. First they train and play for a local club, not a school or a university. Their education and their sport aspirations aren't co-dependant. Second if they're good enough, they can play in an age class above from their early teens so they face better competition, earlier and more often than their USA counterparts. Third some become professional before 18 y.o because they're so good, they train with the pro and get used to the professional level whatever their age is. In the USA when you train with the pro, you already are a pro.

The fans are better in Europe. In the states you see big things done by fans but only along with piped music. In Europe you have spontaneity and no piped music. They don’t bother with all the “patriotism” 💩 of flag waving and national anthem at every game. It’s unnecessary and should only be played at a final. Performing national anthem and waving the flags constantly is disrespectful and cheapens it. Also American sports in general are not about passion but strictly business with commercials, burgers and over hyped glitz. Things you do NOT need of your product is good enough. It’s why there’s so much of it in the NFL because the sport itself is utter garbage compared to the likes of Rugby which is a true world sport

Back in the day basically the more stronger or bigger guy won but the new rules allows guys to use their skills not just strength or force. I don’t think steph wouldve made it back in the day because of how physical it was they wouldnt let his shooting going making him very uncomfortable every shot

The 3pt shot was always in the international game, It just took years for the NBA to realise that 3s were better than long contested twos. Because of the illegal defence rule players didnt have to learn how to shoot. It was specifically designed to benefit superstars so they couldnt be double teamed, because the NBA is an entertainment league before it is a sport. Also the defensive 3 second rule made it so bigs didnt have to learn to shoot aswell so opossing bigs couldnt jam the paint.

@@ljtk1490 I agree with everything you said except for the first sentence. The international game was more of a pick and roll, spread the floor game than the American game was, but I think it was more because the line was closer, the refs called fouls in a way that made it harder to drive/post up (if you remember Tim Duncan basically rage quit international ball after '04 because of how it was reffed), there were less players with size, zones were allowed, and you can knock the ball off the rim. I don't think they were ahead of the curve in terms of looking at the game mathematically.
