Watching your reaction again, Ben Franklin was a founding father, but wasn't ever President. Benjamin Franklin was an American polymath, a leading writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, a founding father of the United States of America, and political philosopher. And certainly, among the most influential intellectuals of his time. But not President.

There's a long backstory on Adams and Jefferson. They worked together in the Continental Congress for a Declaration of Independence that Jefferson ultimately wrote but that Adams had pushed and driven others to agree. They had great admiration for each other but also very different policy ideas in many areas, maintaining a tense but friendly rivalry until they died, both 4th of July in 1826, 50 years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Adams was so competitive where Jefferson was concerned that on his deathbed he lamented "Jefferson lives on", not knowing that Jefferson had died hours earlier.

@lightwalker222
@lightwalker222 9 ай бұрын
Well the Six Frigates did have pretty heavy scantlings, similar to a ship of the line, which gave some protection against enemy fire. But no ship was cannonproof. The reason Constitution got the name "old ironsides" is due to her fight with HMS Guerriere. During that battle, Guerriere fired some shots from beyond the effective range of her cannons, which were out of energy by the time they hit Constitution and just bounced off the sides. So yeah, the Six were solidly built for a frigate of their time, and a couple cannonballs did bounce off Constitution one time due to being out of range. The case usually gets overstated though. The USS Chesapeake didn't look especially cannon resistant in her battle against HMS Shannon.
@supremecaffeine2633
@supremecaffeine2633 9 ай бұрын
@@lightwalker222 The live oak and white oak used to make the 6 frigates was 20% more durable than the English oak used by the Royal Navy. The USS Chesapeake was also the smallest of the six due to a lack of resources during her construction, not to mention her captain and crew were both new.

I actually read a book about this about 20 years ago (my, how time flies!) called Jefferson's War: America's First War on Terror 1801-1805. A lot of details that I don't remember or missed, but one thing I remember from the book is that Jefferson and other American leaders foresaw another war with England in about 10 years time, and the country will need seasoned naval leaders when it happens. Of course, in about ten years, the United States was fighting England again in the War of 1812. Perhaps the most amazing thing that I got from learning from the book is that in the time when most countries (except for England) would pay pirates' ransoms, is the precedent that this brand new country called the United States would set a policy of not negotiating with terrorists, and it became the foundation of the United States' policy today. In fact, the book stated the American leaders wanted to send the message to the world that the United States would be unlike other countries. On a personal note, I served on the USS Sterett, named after a famous naval commander who fought in the Barbary Wars and the quasi war with the French.

So I do have appoint to dispute with the video you're reacting to. Specifically the points are made about John adams. The reason why he didn't send the Navy to go fight the Barbary pirates was because we were fighting something called the quasi war with the french. They were saying that we needed their permanent protection to be safe from the English and when we tried to negotiate with the French they wouldn't see our ministers. That culminated in the XYZ affair and hostilities broke out. Our Navy at the time was too small to take on the French let alone the French and the Barbary pirates. So he was in not just expanding the Navy but also expanding the army as well just in case it turned into an actual war instead of a bunch of skirmishes on the high seas. Jefferson had the philosophy of we started this project first we need to finish it first. Atoms have the philosophy of the French are the biggest kids on the block at the moment and the most immediate threat, take care of them first then we can fight the pirates

12:12 A couple of caveats. The official position of Jefferson's "Republican Party" (not to be confused with the Republican Party founded in 1854) was that it opposed standing military forces because it saw them as a threat to the liberties obtained in the Revolution. It should be noted that it would have been a Federalist Congress in 1794 that approved the Naval Act and George Washington was a quasi-Federalist, owing to his alliance with Alexander Hamilton. John Adams while a Federalist (the only official one to be President) was a practitioner of restraint. The rest of his party wanted to go to war with France when they were messing with our ships, but Adams declined. Jefferson wanted to go to war with the Barbary Pirates and Adams likewise refused. To Adam's credit, he probably thought America was too weak to get involved with foreign conflicts and Washington had warned against foreign entanglements setting out would be the foundation of American Isolationism until the World Wars. Yes America would become a giant, but that is decades away and the European economies and militaries dwarf the US by every metric in the 1790s. You need look no further than the war of 1812 for evidence that the US was not ready for conflict in 1798. I would say 1840s is when America became largely unassailable to foreign invasion by securing the Rocky Mountains in the Mexican War, which served as a buffer to the American heartland, which contains both the largest stretch of arable land in a climate that maximizes crop yields, overlaid perfectly with the largest system of navigable rivers in the world. Jefferson's Louisiana purchase gave the US complete control of this region, but it was still vulnerable to the West until the Mexican War pushed the US border to the Pacific. In terms of Jefferson's Presidency, his second term was a disaster, but his successes in his first term and his work during the Revolution (particularly the Declaration of Independence) secured his legacy as a founding father. The same is the case for James Madison, whose second term was defined by the disaster of the War of 1812, but likewise his role in crafting the constitution secured his legacy as a founding father. Circling back to the party dynamics: The Federalist Party was the party of the landed and financial elites, which included merchants and most of the planter class. They supported a stronger central government as means to ensure the protection of those interests and promote the internal development of the economy through stabilizing the financial sector, investing in roads and canals, and to some extent placing tariffs on foreign manufactured goods to spur internal manufacturing growth (though the merchants would eventually pull the Federalists in a wildly different direction as they collapsed in the 1800s). They also supported the creation of the Army to protect against Native raids, mob violence (especially after the French Revolution) and lets be honest, slave revolts. They supported the Navy to protect those very merchants against pirates and foreign navies. There outlook was one of realism, the US was a very small fish in pond full of sharks and the Government needed to act to promote economic growth and military strength before some foreign power swooped in and crushed it in the cradle. The Jeffersonian Republican Party (historians often refer to this as the "Democratic-Republican Party, but that is not the name they would have used until the 1820s), was the party of small farmers, urban artisans and immigrant laborers. They took mostly classical liberal positions, which meant that opposed government power for fear that it would be used to oppress the common man, basically like what happened in most of Europe in the age of Absolutism. They opposed any government interference in the economy and they opposed standing military forces, as a threat to liberty. They also championed separation of church and state and the freedom of the press, supported immigration and free trade, and opposed the speculation of the nascent financial sector in New York as well as the corruption that it caused. Their outlook was one of idealism, that the best way to preserve and extend the gains of the Revolution was to strictly adhere to the classically liberal principles that had sparked the American Revolution in the first place. However, one of Jefferson's biggest flaws is that he was something of a hypocrite. For example he denounced slavery as evil, but never actually did anything to free his own slaves because he remained constantly in debt to support his lavish lifestyle well beyond his means, and under the rules at the time, giving up his slaves would have removed assets that he could borrowed against, assuming they were not already being used as collateral in which case he could not sell them at all. This also meant that once he got into office, he began to deviate greatly from his own party's orthodoxy. He established the military academy at West Point, despite opposition to a standing military. He purchased the Louisiana territory with no explicit constitutional authorization to buy land, despite his party's strong stance on very strict interpretation of the constitution. He then also slapped an Embargo on Britain and France in 1807, which violated his party's principles on Free Trade and tanked the trade based economy of New England (but opened the door to the rise of a manufacturing economy in the region), drove the dying Federalists in the direction of first Free Trade and then New England Secession (Hartford Convention of 1814) and created the opening for the rise of a nationalist wing within his own party ready to capitalize on the space abandoned by the Federalists. This wing would push for the War of 1812 and then in its aftermath displace the Federalists as the supporters of economic nationalism and stronger central government. In reaction to all of this though, you had people who were horrified by the deviations in principles, enraged by the continued speculation and resulting economic collapse it brought, and hostile to the banking establishment created by the Federalists and revived by the nationalist wing of the Republicans. Most of all they despised the establishment and believed that they had been corrupted and were not representing the common man. The group came to be called the "Democratic-Republicans" in the 1820s because they championed the removal of land ownership as a requirement to vote and later came to be called just Democrats. They were led by Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. The National Republicans would merge with other groups to form the Whigs and would come to be led by Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. Jackson claimed to be operating in the spirit of Jefferson and called himself "a Jeffersonian Republican", meanwhile Thomas Jefferson referred to Andrew Jackson as "a dangerous man". Thomas Jefferson is as man of complexities and contradictions and those contradictions would come to define the United State's early history thus. The Jefferson of the Declaration of Independence, versus the Jefferson of the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions in 1798 that endorsed secession, versus the Jefferson who owned slaves and was among the many founding fathers who kicked that can down the road.

One distinction in the language of the document founding the navy is this. The navy wasn't established to protect our merchant vessels. It was expressly created to hunt down pirates. Aggressive.....not defensive. I fvcking LOVE how important such a detail in that document is 😂.

TheFatElectricians sources on his history stories are always very good. Many of them are very famous and well known stories for those interested in US military history. Or the occasional international story as well. He tends to provide some interesting lesser known facts to the more famous people/stories as well that can be fun. Love your reactions, keep making all the great content. Wish you the best from across the pond, cheers!

Jefferson was our third president, he also wrote the Declaration of Independence. Side note, at that time the reason Jefferson was Adam’s vice president was because Jefferson got second place.

The anchors are on the bow and stern of the ship outside the hull below main deck level and the chains are in chain lockers under the bow and stern decks where they are attached to the ship. It's a loud operation to weigh anchor. Former merchant marine. Navigator/pilot/ professional sun tanner haha. Being on a tanker is like a cruise with very little work to do and a lot of good food and travel. I miss it. The Asian Pacific tours were incredible!

Back in the early 2000s when I went to College/University I had a friend who claimed actually was the descendant of Thomas Jefferson and his Black slave Sally Hemmigs. Him being White also took me by surprise. He told me the truth that many of their children went on to marry other white people and their childrens children could pass as White. It kind of reminded me of the Brazilian show relaesed around the time as the Blockbuster hit "Roots" before both of us were born in the United States. I later looked it up and it was a Portuguese language Blockbuster called "Escrava Isaura" released in 1976. I had only seen Snippets of the show before online and I assumed it was in Russian😂. And not the Remake, which apparently there is one available online .Of course you know Andre, myself and many confused Portuguese with the Russian. Especially in the early 2000s when I was basically a kid in college.
