My trip on the eurostar to brussels. Video includes... channel tunnel, 186mph, startup sound.
The Eurostars motor sound is not that really loud roaring sound that you normally associate with eurostars, (which you hear when one wizzes past) this is actually just the cooling fan for the motor.
The actual motor sound can be heard if inside the train you stand at the front or back doors.
I have always thought of eurostars as noisy dull aeroplane like trains. But this time instead of sitting at my reserved seat (in a horribly sound proofed area), I decided to sit by the rear most doors. And when the train started moving to my surprise it had induction motors powered by inverters where the frequency changes in stages (GTO thyristors), a bit like networkers! (when it goes though the tunnel you have to move to one of the other doorways or back to your seat, for some odd safety reason.
I absolutely HATE the way eurostar runs their trains like aeroplanes, and I HATE the need to book in advance, and I HATE the way they have to X-ray all your bags, and I HATE that you have to stand to close to the X-Ray machines. (Despite what they say I reckon that some x-rays must leek out of the opening).
