An Alice in Wonderland video game.....where she actually uses WEAPONS? As a nonsense story writer and Alice in Wonderland fan myself----Damn I wish I had played this. I saw this in an ad once and didn't think much of it assuming it was some generic horror g ame------no this game looks very interesting and fun. A little disturbing but more tasteful and thought provoking than I thought. I don't own an Xbox, only consoles I have are a nintendo switch lite some old gamecubes and super nintendos and the original Playstation. I have heard this is on PC is there any way to still get it on PC and legally?

22:52 ''It seems Alice means a lot to him'' Which hurts a lot more now that EA vettoed the development of Asylum, and the rejection sucked all the passion American had for Alice. I will never forgive EA for that. Putting that aside, this was a wonderful analysis. I will be back for more.

I find the change of dress depending on the enviorment in Madness Returns to be such a subtle and brilliant way of conveying that it's not just Alice's experiences that affect her imagination - her imagination affects her right back.
@LadyDoomsinger2 жыл бұрын
I especially like how each dress not only fits with the environment, but also the narrative. This seems particularly obvious with the Steamdress, with it's straps, buckles, and corset, representing the restrictive and repressive nature of her life with Dr. Bumby - or the Siren's Dress, with it's bright colors representing her denial and attempt to distract herself from the truth - and especially the Doll outfit, representing objectification as she realizes the truth about what has been happening in the real world. The Silk Maiden and Royal suit are less obvious, but I believe the Asian theme of the Silk Maiden represents conformity, as she is loosing her identity and individuality - and the Royal Suit represents her empowerment as she finally confronts her fears and starts to fight back properly. Even the Hysteria outfit seems to represent her loss of self-control, with it's lack of details or coloring, it's as if all her attention is directed towards her enemies, with no time for or interest in her own appearance.

An interesting thing about Alice's dresses in Madness Returns, that I've noticed (though it is just my own interpretation), is that each dress actually represents Alice's current state of mind reflected in the story; *Steamdress,* with it's buckles and straps, represents the restrictive and repressive nature of her life at Dr. Bumby's orphanage. The control that is exerted upon her, and that she exerts on herself. *Siren Dress,* with it's bright colors, represents her denial - she is attempting desperately to distract herself from the truth of her reality with wacky high-jinx and trivial side quests. *Silk Maiden,* fitting into the Asian theme of her environment, represents conformity, adapting to be part of the world and loosing her own individuality. *Royal Suit,* represents her empowerment (or perhaps acceptance of herself), gaining control of herself and her environment as she attempts to fight back. *Misstiched,* with it's doll iconography, represents objectification, as the truth is revealed, and Alice comes to the realization (and acceptance) of what has been going on in the real world. Even the Hysteria outfit seems to reflect a very specific state of mind; with Alice being consumed by her own overwhelming emotion, the Hysteria outfit is lacking in details or colors, as if Alice's attention is entirely directed towards her enemies, with no time for or interest in her own appearance.

Alice Madness returns is one of my favourite games and you are the perfect person to talk about it. The symbolism in this game is so vivid. The dolls with the gaping holes at the place of their mouths and crotch emphasizes the horror of sexual abuse of children. I also loved the visual design, musical score, tone and voice acting of the game. Each aspect reinforces the message and ambiance of the game so masterfully. How blessed are we to have experienced this piece of art!

3:53 I must say, using Sorrow as a backing track is equivalent to a syringe of a heartache straight through the chest. On the topic of the video, I've played the first Alice on release in 2000, as that was one of the few discs my brother managed to procure for his recently bought "totally-for-work-and-study" Pentium III, and it definitely left an imprint for awhile. It also taught me how impactful the very first impressions can be, as what stuck with me the most was that EA logo fading into a demented laughter as the Cheshire Cat grins, and then a hard cut to the menu image of a traumatized Alice sitting in her asylum bed stark still, clutching her rabbit, staring into an unseen window as the lightning flashes, lighting up the options. To this day, this is probably the exact image I equate this series to. This and the old, worn, rust-covered frame of the Bandersnatch Opticals graphoscope, staring with the empty photo frames, where you partake in LSD - Load, Save, Delete.

I remember at release, not really looking too deeply into Alice or its settings in Madness Returns until I got to the Dollhouse, which I could only describe, at the time, as a Freudian Nightmare Landscape at the time. It made me double back and really take my time going through each land again. Examining all the events over again, from the Valley of Tears shifting to the Valley of Doom as the corruption bled in, the Hatter's Domain, where little people and entire places were gutted, replaced with cogs, and became horrifically less "them" and more "functional". The drowned sailors in the Deluded Depths and putting on a performance at the detriment being eaten by the apathetic posturing of a ring leader, the aggressive take over of the ants by the hornets in the Garden as these fragile paper orgami insects are invaded by something far more organized and brutal. The whimsy of the Card Bridge, the feeling of freedom replaced by despair as you land in the heart of the Queensland. Seeing old guard becoming beastial and mindless before the Dollmaker's corruptions digging deeper into the "heart" of Alice. While everything that was previously held by the Queen of Hearts, is somehow stagnate and unmoving. Like it has just...stopped functioning and is now a land lost to time. Only the Executioner being really "active" in defending against Alice's own intrusion. There is an eerie quiet across the entire domain until the Train enters it. And finally the Dollhouses, which does away with any pretext of pretending what it is. From the way the "enemies" are designed and react to your attacks to the imagery of meat being pounded into conforming slabs, psychological anatomy maps plastered along the cutting board wooden walls, dolls strung along on barb wire strings. Child-like innocence and imagery defiled in abhorrent ways at every corner and facet. Entire sections of pilot the head of doll through seemingly innocent toy like contraptions. But really just being part of some sort of bright and color rat race. And as you head deeper down into the darkness of the Dollhouses there is more and more to be unnerved about, barely lit lightbulbs only being able to provide momentary paths forward but at the cost of other platforms being brought down. Etc. etc. etc.

My first encounter with McGee's Alice came from a magazine, they gave out CDs with wallpapers, avatars, trailers etc and one of the wallpapers was a render of Alice and the Mad Hatter sitting at a table, with the checkered white and black floor falling. It was so striking, I had never seen anything like it and I was hooked. It didn't say where it came from so I searched for it for a while. Had no way of playing it back then but I loved it so much anyway.

Madness returns is , by far , one of my favorite games ever , i always loved that gothic , dark , weird look it has ; well , i always loved gothic , victorian aesthetic anyway ; every scenario , every location , every npc , every detail , has that familiar yet disturbing look , like something's out of place or missing , it's like meeting a childhood friend after ten years and noticing that he is more silent , more quiet , like he's hiding something ( Poe's the fall of the house of Usher transmitted that feeling perfectly ) . Alice's original story ( the Caroll one ) already had that feeling of uneasiness , but mcgee made it to the next level , it really seems that you're living in Victorian London , that you're watching with your own eyes the environment , the buildings , in Victorian England . That game always worked as a form of escapism for me , a place where i felt secure , i spent hours and hours just looking the oriental architecture of the third stage or the steampunk one of the first stage , it always made me feel home , a world where everything was like i wanted , it's hard to describe , i absolutely love this game from the bottom of my heart , it's just .... difficult to choose the right words to describe it . ( And yeah , if i said something wrong , i ask for pardon , i'm brazilian so english isn't my first language so yeah )

The American McGee Alice games are some of the most beautiful and imaginative games ever made, especially for those of us who love the dark and macabre. I'll be honest in saying that I much prefer the stage aesthetics of the first game but the second game had some very nice dark fantasy worlds as well. There's so much I wanna say but fear I will end up making a wall of text because that's how much I could blather on about this game haha. American McGee just poured so much into these games to make them the way they are and it all paid off in the end because even though the games were never top sellers like the publishers wanted, they managed to be memorable and amassed a cult following who love these games even after all this time, there just aren't many games like it, it truly is a classic. The dark and macabre with Victorian influence, it's just so beautiful. And I love how in the sequel, they applied this to Alice's design where it conveys how in the real world Alice looks fragile and frantic whereas in Wonderland, she feels more in control and confident thus having a much more polished look to her. Also shoutout to the Steamdress, that's my most favorite look of hers in the game but uh, I'm bias LOL Anyway nicely done analysis, I love these kinda videos

American's Alice games hold a special place in my heart. I played the original on PC back when it first came out, when I was only about 12, and it seemed like no one had heard anything about it at the time, as it was a bit niche. Even when I started working at a game store years later and I'd ask random customers about it, nearly no one had heard of it. I was elated when the second game released, when I was about 23, and it was everything I'd hoped for, and I played it to death. I eagerly waited for a third, hoping all the heart and soul he put into it would come to fruition... I was so heartbroken when he finally made the announcement in April this year that a third game will never happen with him involved, even if EA gets their head out of their asses. I've always disliked EA, but this full on makes me hate the company now. I am so disappointed in them, and I hate that it seems to have made American want nothing to do with game publishing anymore. I hope he eventually changes his mind, though I can understand why he wouldn't. This is such a great series.

16:53 The weapons are the best part. You can see the detail and care these weapons have. Since its wonderland the time and useage of weapons gave the devs INFINITE creativity. Especially the vorpal blade, the vorpal blade of origin takes form depending on the individual. In Alice’s case: Consider she’s more comfortable with speed, takes form of a kitchen knife instead of a long sword. The Pepper Grinder takes form as a early automatics weapon. Most specifically the early 18th century Gatling gun, used by Teddy Roosevelt. The horse smasher was inspired by hammer weapons. It’s strong but slow swing speed. It’s counter active to most horses being fast. The tea pot cannon was inspired by most older cannons. A handheld handcannon or/ Joan of Arc’s cannon. The care within how the weapons feel. Everything about this game made me appreciate story based flair

Brilliant analysis and video, thank you so much for putting the time into both games, not just the sequel!! The inspiration from Dave McKeans work makes so much sense to the art style of the first in particular, the themes and design are reminiscent of his illustrations for the original Coraline book as well as the incredible film Mirror mask. Personally I actually prefer the atmosphere of the first game, due largely in part to the soundtrack by Chris Vrenna (former drummer of Nine in Nails). He actually used vintage Victorian wind up toys to create the atmospheric soundtrack, and the result is so haunting, melancholy and dreamlike

I can completely agree with this. These two games have slowely been warming up into my personal top 10 games ever just from style alone. Lovely to see a video that closely captures what I love about these games!

Great analysis video! Though I've never actually played the games, I've always admired the art direction of them!

🌺 I seem to watch this video once every few months, sometimes days in a row. I love how you've edited this video and how much detail you've gone to, it's amazing and perfect ✨😊 no doubt I will watch it for years to come just like other Alice Films 🍄

I really hope McGee gets to make a third entry!! It's such a wonderful series and I still let it get my hopes up anytime I hear a rumor for it.

That Folklore music is KILLING ME. Its the first game I got for my PS3 and still a favorite.

Alice Madness Returns is a game that had a big effect on my aesthetic and style senses. It's also a game I never got past the underwater world in because I played it when I was young with an xbox controller and I couldn't get past this one time sensitive puzzle. I've bought it again on steam and have all intentions to go back to it and actually beat it when the mood is right. It's such a special game.

Great video! Also great choice using the epic mickey soundtrack! I really thought Jim Dooley's composition would be very fitting for the Alice series

Somewhere throughout this video, my ears heard a melody from a world long forgotten, a shattered wasteland for old stars, for those whose fate on screen was sealed. I could recognize that epic Mickey song anywhere! I would love to see you check its appearance and design too, I always found it beautiful

At the environment section, I have heard the Paint and Thinner part of Ostown from Epic Mickey. Are you going to talk about the art direction of the game(s) later because I would love to hear about it.

Loved this video essay on the Alice games' style! I'm glad the Alice community, albeit small, still thrives even now, although if the community was larger, perhaps we'd have a third game by now, ahaha. Thanks for the vid! :D

Fantastic video. The strong visuals of the game play very nicely into your excellent eye for video capture. This is another video on your channel that I could just watch without audio and have a great time. Not that I would ever do that, of course, I love your analysis. :) You once again came at the content from a different angle, it's always so interesting to hear your takes. BTW that evil train is straight out of WH 40000.
