Bayonetta, as a character, is so in control of her appearance and such a lover of fashion that she literally completely changes her style between the first game and second! What other character has done that?! To completely change how your main character looks from one game to another is just unheard of in gaming due to things like branding and merch, but Bayonetta is SUCH an in control character, that she even overrides the branding of her own game!

To be frank, I didn't know what to think of Bayonetta until now. Was she a character made to appeal to men or to make fun of such approach? Now I think it is both - as you said in the video she takes pride in her looks and she clearly enjoys the attention. People just like looking good and if I had a chance to make myself into an extravagant alluring god-like figure, I think I would. I think Bayonetta may be one of a few examples of an oversexualized character that isn't harmful to the popular depiction of beauty, mostly due to the overexaggeration and depth of the character. Great video, this one.

Bayonetta is a bait and switch. She _looks_ like your typical videogame cheesecake waifu made only with the corporate mission to prey on horny guys but is actually a complex and compelling character in her own right who is comfortable with her sexuality and is confident in herself and her abilities, which curiously also attracts guys, and girls, and just about anyone. Simply put: we come for the sexy figure and suggestive demeanor, stay for her character
@GeneTonics3 жыл бұрын
I think you got one thing wrong. She wasn't made to appeal to men. She was made appealing.... Period. She was made to be a sexy woman. And just because a sexy woman exists, it doesn't mean she's sexy for men. She's sexy. That's it. It's not FOR anyone. And even if it was its definitely not just for men given how much high fashion and overall appeal her appearance has.
@bluewolf63233 жыл бұрын

To me Bayonetta has never felt sexualised in the same way as, say, Lara Croft, because it feels like Bayonetta is in on the joke. She’s chosen to make herself appear that way very deliberately and it’s done with a wink and a nod I realise it’s completely insane to say that about a fictional character with no actual agency of their own but I still think it’s true.

Did you know that classical marble statues weren't always plain white marble? Used to be painted, a very long time ago. But history is... Strange. There was even an active effort at some points more recently to scrub the tiny fragments of color off, as many of them still have tiny flecks of paint clinging to them, just so worn away they're practically invisible to the naked eye.

@dunnejos84233 жыл бұрын
Yes! Yes they were. Greco-roman period "marble" being painted was actually known since the early 1800s when like OP said, they found samples of paint on some of the frescoes and statues. In fact the vast majority of the mediterranean was painted gorgeous shades of turquoise, rust, terracotta, peach and red. Which you can actually get an idea of by seeing historical districts near open water like in Malta or Sicily, those very same natural pigments exist there to this day. In fact one of my favorite historical facts is that those paintings and statues of heracles are actually painted black or dark brown as it was believed that heracles had phoenician ancestry.
@kostasadis5013 жыл бұрын
That is indeed true. Many are not aware of this fact. Even the Acropolis of Athens was at it's original state painted in vibrant colors that with time faded away. It was not plain white like we see today.

Or fade away through time. A marble standing in the sun atop a spire will remain the same for eons. It will get moldy and grimy and dusty and its paint job will go away snd all that remains is the marble that was covered by paint

9:57 another thing that i find very very interesting about the differences between Jeanne and Bayonetta in terms of fashion is that Jeanne's signature red outfit in both bayonetta 1 and 2 play a part in how she controls. during character dodge animations here kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5nag3qvfbKerLs you can see that Cereza puts more emphasis on using her whole body as a dodge and rolls off the ground in a curled position which is a bit quicker while Jeanne prefers to use a more acrobatic approach by using her legs as a vantage point to avoid touching the ground as much as possible. this was explained by hideki kamiya as Jeanne protecting her clothing from getting ripped or dirty because it's actual real expensive clothing she bought herself from an in universe fashion brand named *D'arc* which is a reference to Jeanne's name being part of the french (and correct) pronunciation of joan of arc every corner of this game oozes care, thought and STYLE i love it so much!!!!

One specific influence I saw in the architecture of Vigrid is Gaudi, the Catalan architect who designed the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona. There are undulating, organic-looking edges to some of the structures (visible at 16:05) which remind me of his philosophy of designing buildings with elements found in nature. He integrated smooth curves and fractals into his designs, inspired by things like the skeleton of a snake, and in game I think it connects to the organic nature of the angels. Not sure if this is an inspiration pointed out anywhere officially, but it is one I noticed!

The same can be said for why I love the Raimi Spider-Man movies, even if the last one wasn’t a zinger... the campy feeling and style to the film making and writing keeps me coming back to it every few weeks. Though I guess the other reason I adore them is because of how they really stand out compared to modern super hero films with the Dark Knight of setting the more cinematic and gritty trend for a while, which apparently a lot of other companies took notes for what would become the status quo. It’s identity and editing keep them all from feeling different to one another.

This was an awesome watch, it's always great to see somebody else gush over concept art and just the style of a game that has so so much to offer. It's the kind of thing that is impossible to overlook, but there's so much more to see if you take the time to take it all in. Bayonetta especially to me feels like it's a rare example of a game being enhanced by PS3-era graphics, with the kinda over the top particle effects and some things just blown out with bloom, environments that are simultaneously super detailed and low-poly; it feels like the whole team knew what they could get away with and how they could work with the constraints instead of feeling confined within them to bring their art to life, if that makes sense. Anyways, stellar job as always, looking forward to future vids!

That's a very pleaser video. I'm so mad love «BAYONETTA», and all its style in absurd and great esthetic. Wonderful tale. And I cannot fail to note that thumbnail is absolutely loved. Plus I now know that "camp" has a meaning beyond creations of the Haute Couture and the Avant-Garde.

ANOTHER great video - the editing was great throughout! I also have to say, I love the homage to your earlier videos at the beginning. It made me want to watch them all over again.

I didn’t want this video to end. This is the reason Bayonetta is such a strong IP. It has such a strong identity and style

A great video once again ! I've never tried games like Bayonetta or Devil May Cry, and I now feel obligated to give them a shot ^^

Loved the amount of research you put into this, was great to see so much insight into one of my favourite characters and her world. I really need to buy those art books.

Whoa, this is quite an in-depth explanation on the game's styles and art direction. I always like the art style of Bayonetta as it's quite exaggerated and memorable and not many games do the same. Keep up the good work! I will binge-watch your video next XD

Great video about a fantastic game! Learned a lot about the games design influences from this... and now I want to replay it for like the 10th time.

The angels in Bayonetta are much more biblically accurate than our modern rendition of Beautiful Blonde Gender Ambiguous Athletic Winged people. No wonder the first thing they say when they appear to you is "don't be scared"

Bayo is so iconic. I've always loved how she can morph her hair into her outfit.
