At the time of the Eurovision contest, their mother was in bad shape already and i do believe she was diagnosed terminal at that stage. The mother was supposed to be watching this at home, but as a surprise she actually showed up at the show in her wheelchair, to great delight of the sisters so they could share the experience with their mother. She died 2 months later, rest her soul. So yes this song had and has a deep emotional connection for the girls, its their ode to their mother. Thnx for the react Reggie :D

Their Mom was alive at the time. She was even present at the time, even though she was very sick. She came to surprise her daughters.

Another really interesting reaction from you Reggie. I suspect you're going to catch the Eurovision bug - it's a really fascinating journey to go on! Oh, and by the way, Netherlands are the current Eurovision winners - with the song Arcade by Duncan Lawrence. He won in 2019 but, of course, this years contest was cancelled. Rotterdam will host the contest when it returns in 2021.

Their mom was there! She was supporting them since 2007 when they did the national Junior Eurovision Songcontest where they also went to the international final (the junior version is for kids). Their mom would stay at home during Eurovision 2017, but they got surprise with her attendance when their mom managed to come to eurovision, 2 months later their mom passed away.. the song was co-written by their dad, it’s a whole family thing, song written by dad, about mom, sung by the 3 sisters

Ok so basically every national broadcaster - the national TV and Radio represents the country and broadcasts Eurovision (so NBC would probably be the one for the USA if they ever joined - or like CSPAN :P) and they choose the song that will represent them. All broadcasters make an open call for songs and/or artists. Some then choose to hold a televised (for example: Sweden, Norway, Croatia, Ukraine...) or online (Czech Republic and at times San Marino) national selection contest while others gather the submitted entries and choose the song internally (behind closed doors) and those countries typically release a music video for their song before the contest whereas the countries with the national finals usually submit those performances as their promo material. Those 2 methods are used very much 50 50 between the 40+ countries competing right now. Also broadcasters change selection methods whenever they want. My country Croatia had the national selection Dora since we got independence to choose our entry, however in 2012 after a string of failures to qualify from the semi final to the final at Eurovision our broadcaster decided to stop the show and revert to an internal selection. In 2019 they brought back Dora again so now we have a contest again. OG3NE were internally selected and the song is about their mother. Eurovision is always in May and their mother passed away 2 months later due to terminal cancer. They came 11th in the end. There are 26 countries in the grand final at Eurovision, but a total of 42 participated that year so them coming 11th is quite a good result, however I think they deserved higher. Also, here are the results of the other songs you reacted to: Zero Gravity by Kate Miller-Heidke (Australia 2019) - 9th in the final (she won her semifinal though), Hatrið mun sigra by Hatari (Iceland 2019) - 10th in the final, Love Injected by Aminata (Latvia 2015) - 6th in the final. This is also a great time to mention some things to look forward to as well as how the calendar of a Eurovision fan works. By Eurovision rules a song at Eurovision can only have been released after the 1st September of the previous year so only songs released on the 1st of Sep 2020 and after are elligible to compete at Eurovision 2021. However, no country presents their song this early. Usually the first song we get is from Albania in December because they hold a festival to determine their song (Eurovision is actually just a plus - the winner doesn't have to represent them if they don't want to - the reward is winning the festival itself - the same goes for San Remo Festival in Italy). This is also the beginning of the 'National Final season' that lasts until the end date to submit a song (mid March). The countries that choose their songs internally usually wait until mid march to release their songs so in one week in march u get more songs than u got in the entire national final season thus far. After that there is a promotional tour. The usually eurovision pre-parties are: London, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Riga, Amsterdam. These concerts are not televised, but they are a chance for artists to meet eachother and the fans, as well as do interviews and radio promotions. Then in the beginning of May, all the countries (delegations) come to the host city to start rehearsals for 2 weeks, after which we have the live shows. You should know that in November there is a Junior Eurovision for kids and Daneliya Tuleshova who is now competing in AGT, represented Kazakhstan at JESC in 2018.

Here is some more info about the meaning of this song (from esctoday.com/142118/netherlands-emotional-story-behind-og3nes-lights-shadows/ ): "Lights and shadows by OG3NE is a melodious power ballad, but when one listens clearly to the lyrics, a deeper meaning unfolds. Sisters Lisa, Amy and Shelley Vol of OG3NE are actually singing about their mother Isolde Vol, who suffers from a rare form of bone cancer, and the group dedicates the song to her and all people who are suffering, or who have a loved one who is ill. Lisa of OG3NE explains: The inspiration for the song lies close to ourselves. Everybody knows someone who is ill, and how life can suddenly be turned upside down. This song tells about the beautiful things, the Lights, but also about the Shadows in life. The girls of OG3NE, who are also ambassadors of the Dutch ALS (Amyothrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Foundation, privately sung a rough version of Lights and shadows sitting at their mother’s bedside, who was very moved by the lyrics of the song. Shelley says: It is really an ode to our mother. As many people know, she is ill, and with this song we want to musically encourage not only her, but everyone who is sick and their loved ones. We know how it feels. We support this song 100%, it just had to be this way. We feel that it is important that people know what this song signifies. What the message is. Because of her illness, Isolde Vol will most likely not join her daughters in Kyiv. Her husband, OG3NE’s father Rick Vol who composed the song together with musician/producer Rory de Kievit, said: In Lights and Shadows, Rory and I have tried to capture the uncertain and unstable life of patients and their families, and to battle this with positivity and hope. The song especially has to give strength. Although the lyrics of Lights and shadows are bittersweet, it is not a sad song, as OG3NE want to honour the love and strength their mother gives them, and share a message of hope with all people who are suffering." So the song was meant to give hope, but sadly 2 months later their mom passed away. Luckily she was able to visit her daughters in Kiev to see them on stage.

If you want to check out another excellent Dutch singer, you might try Alain Clark - Father & Friend. It's a couple of years old now, but remains a brilliant, upbeat feel good song. Especially if you have a good relationship with your father.

so nice to see some people actually do listen to the lyrics. i mean, there are some people that have English as their native language and they completely miss the underlying meaning of a song. if not the entire song points to it. the line . "what's with the univers, why you?" should make it more then obvious.
