I’m American, so I don’t have a dog in the fight, but I just think the concept of Eurovision as a whole is just so iconic and kinda wholesome. Eurovision was inspired by the Sanremo festival in italy that happens every year in February actually. Our festival (I'm italian btw) is based off songs that are chosen by someone. So basically a music/art director chooses a bunch of unreleased songs sent in by artists or artists get called to participate and they have to compete against other singers and the winner now goes to eurovision. On the festival now there are challenges such as duets and covers where the singers have to duet in a cover or medley with someone other and there have been some interesting performances coming from it. The most memorable being from Angelina Mango who sang La Noia at eurovision this year and a local singer (from Genova like me!) called Alfa. The former sang a song of her deceased father who was also a well known singer and everyone was in tears and shock at her talent. The latter sang with a famous old singer (I can't remember his name) and it became so iconic they released the single version. It's always fun to watch and I can't wait for next year despite I don't love or like italian music that much. But if you like genuine music shows (not the rigged ones full of emotional children with sad stories) now you have one more to watch on top of eurovision.

This song is the only one that was literally EVERYWHERE for a year straight, people who've never watched Eurovision or even knew it existed could sing the chorus, name the singer and... well, learnt about Eurovision existing lol. Seriously, Rybak single-handedly was the reason normal people and not just huge music nerds started to care about the contest. Personally, it feels weird to even suggest there's any more iconic, any other THE Eurovision song in this century. But idk maybe it's just what happened over here in East Europe.

@lemonZzzzs3 ай бұрын
Specific disagreements that stood out enough to remember after watching the whole thing: * Quite a few of your takes seemed to have more to do with recent politics than songs, let alone within the context of their original release * Given your almost violent denouncement of Azerbaijan's rigging of the popular vote, why aren't you as rabidly against the clear rigging of the jury vote for Loreen's Tattoo? * I may be missing something, but I don't see the impact of Euphoria that you see... unless you mean it's the clearest breaking point after which the contest stopped pretending to be a song contest? But even then, I'd argue there were precedents... Personally, I'd say, Rise like a Phoenix and even Molitva deserve the S ranking more than Euphoria does. * I personally always found Ruslana's wild dances cringe, even when it came out; I'd rate it a lot lower... then again, off the top of my head I can't come up with a suggestion that should've won instead of it (I don't remember that year's contest very well) Things I agree with the most: * Dima Bilan was (and probably still is) obnoxious. It doesn't help that that song in particular wasn't worth the level of arrogance he exuded. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has this kind of reaction to him xD * Sobral's song was awesome and absolutely deserved to win as it did. Also, while his infamous comment was poorly worded, the dude had a point :P * Kalush Orchestra's Stefania was win-worthy even without the political situation, despite it being hard to decouple the two. Bonus points for it not being sung in English.

Poland 1994 was quite close to that but the singer decided to sing partly in English during the 2nd rehearsal and since it was against the rules back then, it cost Poland several points and the No.1 spot. @@erinnadia0409 Mess & chaos seems to be the modus operandi in the Polish delegation. Has been for the last decade at least. If there is no huge overhaul of the concept and the organisation of the preselection, there won't be any results, I'm afraid. Established artists will stay away from this dumpster fire, and new artists from independent brands (which tend to be were new talent in Poland starts) won't be able to afford such risky participation. In effect we too often get starlets backed by big labels who can throw money on production and promotion to cover the shortcomings of their inexperienced singers (sometimes, as with Blanka, it works, and sometimes, as with Luna, it doesn't). Also, there hasn't been a single year when the rules and format of Polish preselections didn't change from year to year (sometimes it's internal, sometimes it is part of "Szansa na Sukces" contest, sometimes they make separate public preselections, and no consistent point awarding systems either). They also usually start to give info in January or so (!), with unspecific song submission usually open in November, which leaves hardly any time to actually prepare the performance for the big stage (this is no Sweden, where the performers enter with more or less finished stage concept and production). The only thing Poland has of good quality, are Eurovision media (Misja Eurowizja, eurowizja.org, Dziennik Eurowizyjny, Dobry Wieczór Europo) and the Polish chapter of OGAE (OGAE Polska also run the eurowizja.org page).

Another epic moment like with Austria 2014 which none of other competing songs had - and it was one of the strongest years if anyone ask me.

Yes! I'm shocked to hear that some people were disappointed with her winning... I was shaken to my core when I first saw it, nothing else that year mattered to me. Strangely enough the song that won the contest that I personally love the most is 1995's Nocturne by Secret Garden. I'd put Måneskin as S-tier, but then I've been a total stan since, and have watched them play Zitti e Buoni live on the main stage at Rock Werchter twice now, as well as at their own show, and it's just whoah. It hits me every single time I listen to it and the opening riff starts. As for Nemo, aside of it being jury heavy, it also had the benefit of a really divided televote that year. (in fact that televote would have been even more divided if Joost had been there as well) It might not have been 'my' winner, but it definitely deserved the win it got. (and I'll always appreciate the judges for tanking Israel that year)

My mom is Ukrainian so here's some insight as a native on the two winning songs. Let's start off with the fact in the Soviet union Ukrainian music wasn't really a thing. They loved the Sanremo Music festival and all that type of classic italaian music. My granddad (russian) for example adored Albano and Adriano Celentano. My mom too liked that kind of music back in Ukraine. She immediately recognized Ruslana and was baffled as to how this obscene to this day (didn't age well) song won. But it was a masterpiece if its time for sure. Now I wasn't old enough to remember really the popular songs at the time. I vividly remember what "old" music sounds like but it's from 2007/8 to 2012 as I was born in 2001. I do remember some popular songs from the early 2000's but only the ones that stuck around like Yellow and such. Definitely not ruslana. And for Jamala we didn't really like her because we didn't really understand what she was singing about. Expecially my mom. Back in 1994 she would've been out of uni I believe working in Kiev and travelling the world. She was 3 years away from moving to Italy so she had or has zero recollection of any significant thing happening. Or probably doesn't even know. And because I myself don't understand Ukrainian at all (I can only speak in Russian unfortunately) and my mom's Ukrainian is quite laughable (she didn't like learning the language) and it's sang in part in some very local dialect (probably not even a dialect) we couldn't get the meaning. And compared to other more fun and eye catching songs this fell flat for us. I was probably rooting for Italy as always and don't really remember what I liked but it most likely was some heavily pop song verging into Edm. This is why a lot of old winners (I like to listen to them a lot) are really good and polished songs because people back then couldn't understand the lyrics at all. And all they had to rely on was the music itself. Of course nobody's going to vote for toto cutugno singing in neapolitan when even I barely understand it! This is why for example they changed the rules for the Sanremo festival. This year a singer who almost won brought a song entirely in neapolitan rap. He most likely got a ton of votes from his people while the rest of Italy was barely understanding what he was singing about. So they changed the rule for next year that songs sang in a dialect must contain some italian in there to make them comprehensible to the average viewer.
