The BBC did a great job with this contest and Angela Rippon brought just the right blend of formality / informality even when her ear piece wasn't working and the score board was wrong. She always has had a very warm on screen personality. The songs - what a mixture and how to judge once against the other? Can anyone explain how Israel's song was so underrated? It is a beautiful ballad and Ilanit performed really well. Spain as per usual brought some sunshine and clapping which I liked. I found the Portuguese very moving singing about their country. Lindsey ( RIP- a very sweet lady) & Mike made a great job of Rock Bottom which was a kind of novelty number and so had an unexpectedly high vote. Michelle Torr ( great performance / not so good song) Switzerland also underrated I think. However Marie Myriam and France deserved their win. L'oiseau et l'enfant is a beautiful song that survives the test of time.
@stevebbuk7 жыл бұрын
I agree about Angela's classy compering of the show and haven't much to add about the songs, except Ireland were copying Brotherhood of Man and nearly caught us, Austria's song seemed to go on for ten minutes, and Monaco: well Those Were The Days My Friend, weren't they..

The BBC did a great job with this contest? The contest was delayed for almost a month due to a strike of the technicians/cameramen. Don't like the way Angela was hosting either. Listen how she's talking to the Dutch spokesman when he correctly mentions the error that The Netherlands should have got 6 in stead of 5 points: "look, why don't we let them sort out their problems, you give us your votes". Not very kind is it?
@Tenortalker4 жыл бұрын
@@georgedc1981 I wouldn't remember the strike I am afraid , but was referring to the contest on the night which was certainly not the worst Eurovision we have seen, rather good in comparison with some. I suspect that Angela Rippon was receiving instructions from her studio management team to move the voting on. There are always time considerations with a live broadcast let alone an international one. Perhaps she is to the point , but not unkind. In fact I can confirm to you having spent time in her company on a project in France some time ago that she is very good company and thoughtful of others.

What a great contest. I started to watch all contests from oldest to newest last month. I thought the 1976 was great, after the somewhat lame 1975 contest. But 1977 was even better. Both 1976 and 1977 had not a single boring song (at least for me). I think it's quite funny hearing UK singing "Where are we? Rock bottom." when they often hit rock bottom in the contest nowadays. Great winner ! This a capella intro is just mesmerising . I just heard a podcast in which Marie Myriam explained how terrified she was before getting on stage. She was very young; about to turn 20 that night, at midnight. She had been rehearsing that intro for weeks... But during the official rehearsals, the judges realised that the song was actually 8 seconds too long ... instead of cutting a bit, the French delegation decided to fasten the pace of the song... starting with this a capella ! 😄 She also explained that she literally had to sing the full 3 minutes. There as no break, no bridge, no moment in which the back-up singers would sing without her. She was just relieved she could reach the end, out of breath, but she did it !

Just spotted at 0:54 - Ronnie Hazlehurst, the musical director and conductor here, must have adapted that little theme for Big Ben as his theme tune for To the Manor Born (1979-1981).

Pete Murray could never hold a candle to Terry Wogan. Terry created a lighter dynamic to the contest which viewers loved. BBC Musical Director, Ronnie Hazlehurst was a lovely man; ... simply the best of 'Gentlemen'.
@mahf_mahf Жыл бұрын
Terry Wogan was terrible . he hurt eurovision so badly with his borderline racist comments, year after year. he managed to convince the Brits that everybody hated them just because the crap song UK was sending did not get any vote. Such a jerk

Strong finish with France. She sounded fantastic when it was just her without the instruments. It should have stayed a cappella a little bit longer.

Odd how the commentator mentions Eldad Shrem composed and arranged the song, then says he isn't conducting that night...except then he announces him as the conductor!

And the text with the title of the Israeli entry was by far the worst of them all. How could the BBC have such an awful lettering? Ilanit once said in a TV program that when her husband saw how the title of the Israeli song appeared on screen, he immediately knew that they hadn't got any chance to win.
