People forget at sea Kid was sinking big mom ships left and right basically winning each and everytime. So much so that high ranking members of her crew were scared of Kid. Which lead to Luffy making the deal with big mom about the treasure from fishmen Island. Also kid was actively attacking Yonko ships and operations while others were serving Yonko during the time skip. Unlike the other Supernova he was the only one known to have his own territory. Kiddo had to personally come and fight Kid.

I wholeheartedly agree, Kid has been through a lot during the two year timeskip and in the series in general. With what had happened to him in Wano and him joining forces with the Heart Pirates and the Straw Hat Pirates to take down Kaido, truly shows how much character development had evolved Kid's character. As mentioned, according to Oda of the members of the Worst Generation, one of the members he had the biggest plans for was Kid and it shows. Don't get me wrong, I have respect for all(not Apoo) of the members of the Worst Generation but Kid deserves more admiration.

I think Kid is on Luffys level because Oda went out of his way to compare the 2 of them more than once. Luffy might have the jump on Kid because of his advanced haki, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Kid gets it during the war or is already half way there. There it is mutual respect, but Luffy’s will always supersedes Law’s, making him have to chase after him. On the other hand, whenever Kidd and Luffy are in a room their will’s clash. Kid is kind of set up to be Luffy’s Vegeta.. sure, they haven’t fought yet and a lot of Vegeta’s character arc was based on his decisions AFTER losing to Goku, but Luffy and Kid have competed on equal footing. They were equal in strength with the sea stone cuffs on, which makes you wonder who was stronger pre time skip. Luffy’s upper hand here seems to be his knowledge of Haki. I’m sure Kid has learned some techniques after encountering three Yonko, but he hasn’t had a master to teach him about Future-Sight, Conquerer’s, and Ryo. Even so, he’s survived for a longer amount of time than Luffy has in the New World, which is a huge indicator of his raw strength. Luffy wouldn’t have lived this long had he gone straight to the New World from Sabaody. We know this by how hard fought his battles have been. He might have still smacked Hordy, but he wouldn’t have beat Doflamingo without learning to control his King’s Haki and Gear 4th. He also wouldn’t have gotten out of Totto land without picking up Future-Sight. We don’t exactly know how Kid managed to survive his run in with Shanks, but we do know he was able to get in and out of Totto Land without training from Rayleigh.. with one arm (shanks one armed weakness debunked). All that talk from Rayleigh about Haki being strengthened in the heat of combat seems to be how Kid has gotten his power ups. Near death experiences resulting in great power increases. Very Saiyan like. After all this time, he’s able to match Luffy in strength with none of Luffy’s achievements or training. That alone is reason enough to respect Kid. Edit: spelling

Kidd had multiple scraps with Yonkou Crews and came out alive. He lost his arm to Shanks Crew and injured a Big Mom Sweet Commander. Both before attempting to form an alliance. Before Luffy got back in the game, all Law did was become a Schichibukai. That's exactly why Kidd and Luffy are the real rivals and Law is a step behind.

I think Kid and Luffy are at a comparable level, Luffy gaining the advanced armament haki might just edges it. Like you mentioned, Kid went directly into the New World while Luffy and his crew trained. Kid has clashes with two Yonkos and lived to tell the tale.... he has had to wing it and rely on his Will, DF, Skill and a probable ability to improvise, now he is going up against Kaido. Him taking those Ls isn't too big a deal for me.... Luffy usually gets beat a few times each arc's by the boss before eventually overcoming; he learns and grows with each encounter. We could argue the same for Kid... difference is he isn't the MC so we don't follow his story closely. Based on his portrayal so far, I think he is set to be one of Luffy's main rivals. I expect to see him notch a notable feat in Wano.

One Piece is notorious for symbolism and I think scar placement is huge. Luffy has an X scar on his chest (MC is a pirate. X marks the spot. Look at me, look at me). I think Kid's scars on his face post time skip indicate he is constantly fighting for superiority (because if someone is a the head of an organization or group, they're the leader). Your analysis of Kid being the main rival of the Supernovas is pretty consistent with my headcannon, but I feel like Kid's purpose is to show that Luffy's goal can still be pursued without plot armor and still be attainable.

They're both relentless asf, they have the same goal, their attitudes almost mirror each other, and there's the fact that they're obviously meant to be two sides of the same coin. However in the end I do think Luffy wins but Luffy is most definitely gonna be fucked up after the fight.

I think people are down playing the scene where the worst trip attacks one of kaidos ship. Each was aiming to one shot that gigantic ship with a move that was super fast and destructive. We know law could do it with his fruit and swordsmanship. But Luffy had to go into Gear 4th his most powerful form. You have to admit kid has to be somewhere near those two in power and he just used one of his named moves to pull of that same level of speed and destruction as gear 4th Luffy. One Piece always taught me that things are never exactly set in stone in fights. No ABC, rock paper scissors, etc logic can ever really tell if a character is good in a fight or not. Even if someone is totally outmatched, it won't mean they're forever a character that just sucks with never finding a way to improve. Kid is just one of many characters I find baffling to dismiss because of his shoddy record when he has done some pretty vicious stuff on the side...And you know, he isn't dead from those encounters and looks to be back for more.

I'm glad that you recognized Kid's potential. Many people just don't have the patience for Oda's writing style. People thought Kaido was nigh invincible until Oden slashed him. People believe that Kidd is useless until he proves himself to be Luffy's counterpart. Udon was everything I needed to see to recognize Kid's potential as Luffy's rival. Stampede showed us evidence. Hell even pirate warriors 4 showed us that Oda has plans for Kidd being powerful (even though the events in Wano aren't canon). I can't wait to see what whacky ideas Oda has for Kidd's fruit ability.

Kid facing off against high-tier fighters either he wins or lose still gives him experience and what's the best way to increase your haki? From combat with other haki users, we learned this from Luffy versus Katakuri. Whether Kid knows this or not he's getting stronger from this experience with the Yonkos.

I remember when the supernovas were introduced and I instantly liked Kidd's design and character and a lot of people did.. and then the timeskip happened & Law's big role that lasted years and Kidd's vague background actions were dismissed as being dumb/ without any plan behind it. He remained my favorite supernova but whenever I told that anyone two years later everyone I knew was just like "YeAh buT He dUMb anD WeaK ThO" or "bUT LaW iS moRE EpiC!!! 1!" I mean Kidd is the one who truly has the same dream of becoming Pirate King like Luffy but he also doesn't have any of his plot armor. That in and itself already sets up for a great character tragedy and I really hope Oda doesn't miss out on this.

This makes me think about Shanks being a celestial dragon theory’s because it feels like Kid had his mind set on Shanks first always and it felt like it was for a reason just as Luffy wanted Shanks last. This also makes me think of how Kid also hints at having knowledge of Sabo giving him a lead over Luffy in some way (Sabo is high ranking revolutionary who opposes the CD) that Luffy didn’t (Kid didn’t know they were brothers) which is another subtle way of explaining how Kid could be motivated by hate towards CD

Kid just hasnt fought anyone on the level that luffy fought and won. Luffy challenging big mom was so that luffy could take back sanji while kid went straight to shanks with the intention of taking him down. He also fought head on with kaido and survived which means kaido believes that kid is strong enough to be kept alive and turned to kaidos side. If kid had fought someone similar in stregth to katakuri he may have won his bounty is only as low as it is because he is specifically aiming high

mike johnson Kid is pretty much Luffy pre time skip. Luffy went up against pirates that were way stronger than him and grew (the Shichibukai). Meanwhile, Kid went up against the yonkou, the fact he’s even still alive speaks a lot. But, he also scarred some BM commander. He’s already grown a fuck ton in power if we realize he was probably around Luffy level 2 years ago to bare minimum commander level.

Hopefully Kid gets more shine and development. There are so many characters that some are going to be left behind from their complete potential that we have for them. Unless Oda is going full lord of the rings mode and giving everyone the time that they need to be complete characters.
