people on both sides are looking at this in too polar (edit: "two polar" no pun originally intended) Don't look at these as an "either or" for traditional lithium ion batteries. Look at these as the "next generation" of standard lithium ion. Volkswagon/Audi/Bugatti, etc will use LIon batteries up through about 2030 or so and then move to solid state. And the rest of the industry will need to follow even if not using QS own with solid state, even if it is not QS patent, just to stay in business. There are two separate plays here just like every other stock. Not just one play. you can either day trade this or you can buy for the future. it is not only one or the other

Solid state batteries will not work in cars, to charge a 100kw solid state battery in 15minutes would require a draw of 400kw from the grid. that's the equivalent of 100 air conditioners (assuming one electric solid state car), the conventional grid will not and never will be capable of handling the energy drain of this magnitude. Heavy vehicles(large trucks) have motors that draw 400- 500kw per hour, so you can imagine the battery they would be need to run and the energy needed for charging?

Looks like they're using NMC cathode technology as opposed to Tesla's NCA technology. NMC cathodes are a little less energy dense than NCA but safer. The Nissan Leaf uses NMC as well and I don't think they've had a single instance of a battery pack fire. So I assume the energy density increase is coming almost exclusively from replacing the carbon anode with Lithium metal. This is not new and while it's well known to supply a healthy increase in energy it also has reduced charge cycles (when compared to carbon anodes). We have to be careful here as the lithium metal anode idea has been thrown around a lot over the last few years for it's increased energy density but usually without mentioning the reduced charge cycles. These companies like to state how great is a battery pack that allows 1000 miles of range. However, being better would largely depend upon the number of full charge cycles it can endure before losing significant capacity. Temper that 1000 mile range figure with a 200 charge cycle life for a 200,000 mile lifespan. That may sound great but is it really better than a battery pack like Tesla's which may only get 400 miles per charge but can be charged over 1500 times (about 600,000 miles of life). If the cost is significantly lower than its justified otherwise it sounds like six of one vs. a half dozen of another.

All sorts of storage mediums exist. Pumped hydro - move the water up higher, then let it back down when you need it. You can also use a crane to move heavy objects higher - stack them up like building a castle. Or pressurized air in large volumes, e.g. stored in mountains, or wells. There are many options, and to be honest I think these may be better than using batteries because we only have so much materials available for batteries, and these are better used in cars and other vehicles, where say pumped hydro is not an option for them.
