EV Charging in Europe, what I AND Herbert Diess learned on our road trips

Did a road trip myself recently in the US, in my Tesla M3 LR. Did 4500 mi (7200 Km ), 5 different states, visited 5 national parks, 2 mountain biking parks in the middle of nowhere. The charging experience was perfect. Not a single charger broken, always fast, always able to find a te restroom, get drink, etc. Absolutely enjoyable the whole trip!

Just did a 1200 mile trip across the midwest to Colorado in the US with our Model Y. Our experience was as amazing as yours. Plenty of chargers, almost no waitingz and even bumped into Tesla techs doing routine maintenance on the chargers. I will never buy an ICE car again.

Main routes in the US are not a problem, it is the non-Interstate routes and smaller rural areas that are lacking. For example, in order to get to my brother in Boise, ID from Omaha, NE there is only 1 route we can take. The more scenic highways are off limits due to lack of charging infrastructure, much less Superchargers. ice cars have one advantage in that they can go anywhere be it the tiniest town in BFE, a small highway or country road, gaps stations are everywhere. Having a common charging device system would speed implementation of EVs. The NHTSA should have mandated a common connector a long time ago and the Biden administration's toothless dog and pony show with the OEMs promising to make more EVs did not even discuss charging infrastructure.

@@jmpetersrn Our 2019 SR+ can take a scenic route via Old Faithful for example. ABRP predicts 55mph max between Jackson and Rock Springs, but in reasonable weather this would be 60mph or so. Presumably you wouldn’t be batting through scenic areas anyway, and we find ABRP consistently underestimates, which is a good thing. You could also top up at meal/rest breaks on scattered 7/11kWh chargers, or just run an extension lead up to the diner/restaurant etc…with their consent. ;) A long range will breeze it. We found in the 70’s that the gas fuelling stations were far and few between in the Yellowstone area. I’ve heard that’s still the case?

@@cbromley562 I used ABRP to plan and literally has 1 route to get from A to B. No going through the Black Hills to Ft. Robinson then to Boise. Yes, it CAN be done, but adding days to charge on a trip when you get a week off is not always feasible. These are still the pioneer days of EV. It will take years, decades to be gas equivalent. It didn't come this way overnight for ICE infrastructure, it won't be overnight for EV infrastructure either.

I’m more optimistic that there’ll be a proliferation of charging points within the coming years, as businesses see the benefit of have a company such as Chargepoint install them. And who knows how quickly it will expand when Tesla open up the network, and use revenue for further expansion?

I absolutely agree that making these charging stops is actually better for safer and more relaxed driving. In the days I was driving an ICE car, the habit was to just drive and drive - until I got to my destination (usually very tired and in a bad mood). These days, we leave home an hour earlier and enjoy the drive as much as we do the breaks. And we are not dog-tired when we reach our destination.

That is a lame excuse for it's limitations. I did my European road trips with my Ford Mondeo Diesel first and later with my Jaguar FX. My road trips are more like 17-18 days, 7000 to 8300 km's. I bet I was better off with my 1000 km range Diesel and 850 km gasoline Jag.

Yep, it’s all down to Tesla to make it happen. I hope the legacy EV dabblers dig deep into their pockets to help out…won’t be surprised if they don’t, in fact they’re perhaps more likely to accuse Tesla of being a monopoly. It’s rather pitiful. On a more positive note, Instavolt in the UK are worthy of praise. We haven’t used them yet, but they’re building up a highly regarded network of easy to use and reliable chargers, often in offbeat areas.

Hey Lars! Non Tesla drivers have to understand who is behind their network. When I looked up Ionity it all made sense why it's crap and the VW charging punishment system is just as bad here in the USA, yet VW now wants to sell it. I think it would be funny if Tesla bought them, improved them and then called them something else. Tesla has ramped up their charging distribution and are making them now in Shanghai as well as the Buffalo, NY Gigafactory (where they also make the solar panels). They were ALWAYS INVITED TO JOIN TESLA, but they though Tesla would die... so they ignored the helping hand extended to them. Their customers will end up being Tesla customers due to these experiences so when Berlin ramps up it will be interesting to see how many more Tesla's will be on the Auto Bahn.

Seems to me the current issue is NOT the chargers or locations but simply the wholly inadequate maintenance resources applied to these third party networks? And it will soon be, inadequate number of stalls per location. WIth a non tesla, you really need to get a car with long range to make up for this.

@@Joe-lb8qnBroken chargers are infuriating, and I don't mean 1 out of 8 out for a short time. When you go to a station, you shouldn't have to worry about whether you will be able to charge or not. At least if there is no charger, you know to go somewhere else. If there is only 1 or 2 chargers, a level 2 is ok for a backup.

You speak the truth Lars!! We are almost 3 years in with our M3 long range. I estimate we have made about 10 trips from CA to ID in our M3. Basically 750 miles one way from Sacramento CA to Rexburg ID. During this time they have added three charging locations near the freeway and of course many more that are fairly close to the freeway. Needless to say we don't even have to think about what we are doing when it comes to charging! I now have more options if ....lets say I want to burn the road up or if its below freezing in ID!! We have put our little M3 and the charging network to the test and they have both been performing like a well "OILED" machine!! haha!!

Lars, I agree that 2h between stops makes for much more comfortable road trips; especially with young children. When your children are grown you will still only be able to go a maximum of 2h between stops, but it will be for a different reason.....

I have been on 4 different road trips all up and down the east coast of the US from Maine to Florida in my Model 3 and now Model Y. With the exception of a few remote areas where I had to plan ahead on where to charge they were good trips. I will never buy another ICE car again!

My wife and I did a road trip from Phoenix, AZ where we live, to Bethany Beach, Delaware. Over 7000 miles, 11,000 km, round trip, and we had no problem charging our car along the way. Our car is a Model S with free charging for life, so It didn't cost anything to charge it. Going to miss the free charging when I get my tri-motor Cybertruck.

I immediately thought about Poland, since I have relatives there and like to go visit them. There are very few supercharges and the non Tesla charges are also not too well represented. I actually had to wait in a charging queue at two Tesla Supercharger locations here in Norway this summer, so Tesla's Superchargers are not necessarily always available and free of queues either. Luckily only 15-20 minutes of waiting on both occasions. One of the stations was a 24 stall location so the turnover was very quick.

I had the same experience. I was charging on all kinds of networks before we got Superchargers. The difference is night and day. Even the location of the chargers is far superior here.

Excellent presentation! I now agree, Tesla MUST open their Supercharger network to other EVs to support the Transition to Sustainable Transportation. Other OEMs don't care about EVs. What they see as a _'RISK',_ Tesla sees as a _NECESSITY._ Something that absolutely must be done without delay. Meanwhile, Denial, Deferment, and Delay are all that matter to other traditional conventional legacy ICE automobile manufacturers regarding EVs, just as they have for the past thirty-to-forty-five years. They do not look forward to a world where _'saving gasoline/petrol'_ is no longer a motivating factor among consumers, because no one needs or uses the stuff any longer.

If I could give you more thumbs up, I would. I’ve had exactly the same experience here in Spain. At a shopping centre there were 10 Tesla super charger stalls (3 occupied) and one duel charging stall for everyone else (both occupied). It’s just not good enough. Opening up the Tesla network though, would just let all the other manufacturers off the hook and that is what they are holding out for. It’s just not good enough.

1300 miles to my Brother's place in Texas then 1300 miles back home, easiest roadtrip I've ever done. Using autopilot along the way helped with fatigue, as in I wasn't fatigued at the end of the 2nd day when I got to his place. Yeah, only a 2 day drive, 1300 miles, with 2 adults and two kids.

I've owned five Teslas, four of them long-distance travelers on the Tesla supercharger network. (The Roadster, my first Tesla, turned out to be a Tesla stepchild, tethered to home on a 100-mile radius. Elon would not help us out even by adding 240 volt plugs at supercharger stations. Very disappointed in that and sold the Roadster.) With the other four, I have never had the slightest concern about range, never seen a supercharger unit out of commission, never considered plugging into some other charging network. Also will not consider purchasing another EV brand unless the charging network situation changes drastically. Superchargers are Tesla, and Tesla is superchargers. Porsche Taycan Turbo? What a laugh. Go with supercharging. Go with Tesla.

This brings out a point that is very important for EVs. With a lot of cars waiting at a charging station, the wait can be a major problem, in a way that you would only rarely have filling up with liquid fuels. Not a show-stopper for a transition to EVs, but it means charging stations need to be plentiful, more than you might first think.

The crazy part is, Tesla can leverage its own charger network better than other makers can leverage the 3rd party networks. There are manufacturers producing cars that charge faster than Teslas, presumably in their own factories. There's nowhere in the wild to do that. So Tesla charges fastest. And that's even if a non Tesla can find a third party charger and it ain't full.

Honestly, it depends on where in Europe. Some places are overpacked with chargers and others have nothing. Where I live, there are chargers everywhere and not from tesla but all work great!

Great video as usual! IMO, Tesla should open the charger to other EVs but at much higher charging price and sell them Tesla's own charger adapter with enough profit. Since Tesla owners already paid for the cost of charging stations (built into the price of all Tesla cars) plus added inconveniences of possibly waiting longer for the charging with added usage.

it is charging chaos... i travelled across europe and no toilets, food/drinks, not even shelters available. And necessity to have like 15 registrations, 10 rfid cards and 20 apps in mobile phone is ridiculous .. if your phone dies or you'll have no data, you are screwed, you cant charge and pay by debit card.

Biggest difference between Tesla and ice is you have to babysit the smelly gas pump whereas with a Tesla you are actually parking to charge, to go eat, or take a restroom break, or even enjoy tourist traps or whatever and when you're finished... Well actually in many cases you may have to unplug and park elsewhere since it would be done charging before you're finished.

I have a few EVs on my short list for next year. Ichave the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and the Nissan Ariya. But every time I weigh the pros and cons I eventually end up with the Model Y or Model 3 Long Range at the top of my list. The ease of use as well ad the autopilot, vehicles with some of the best range in the industry, energy efficient, over the air updates, really good navigation with listed chargers and their state if operation and the consistency and overall reliability of the ever expanding charging network.....continues to bring me back to wanting to buy a Tesla. Some want to go green, look cool, use it as a status symbol to show they're part of the Elon family...but as you can see from my list I list for the practicality and what's economical for me. Oh yeah, and they look cool too 😎

Yeah I can see the logic in a Tesla, I have a BMW i3 and was charging the car just needed a top up I was at 65% so should have been up to 80% in a 1.5hrs. But when I got back a eton was charging beside me. So you can guess my car got 5miles exactly, because the power was going to the etron. Basically the chargers for other cars are just compliant standard stations. Thankfully I charge overnight most of the time.

A road trip on the highway with a hybrid which can only get 25 kms on a charge is a really dumb waste of time to stop in a charging station. @130kms/hr their charge will last about half the 25 kms which is calculated for city driving...

Are the old ICE manufacturers deliberately slowing down EV adoption, by, for example NOT investing anything into the charging network ? And making it a horrible experience...it basically copies their business model of poor customer service and lack of vision - auto companies that need profit, dealerships that need your cash, cars that need servicing, and don't really care about the customer???

It is not Tesla's nor any other vehicle manufacturer's responsibility to provide charging. It's about any energy companies will to profit from their customers.

@Barskor1 As is their right but not responsibility. It is also very much in their interest but not their customers necessarily if they’re gouged in due course for lack of free enterprise options. Tesla Cars and Tesla Energy are not to be seen as the same thing even though they’re one and the same company. As electric cars don’t require as much servicing, the ongoing revenue stream will be energy and any subscription scheme which customers should vehemently avoid including any mobile network fees.

I think that as EV adaption increases, we'll see more investment in charging infrastructure. While 2% of the total new car market is bigger than ever, we're still not near a tipping point. I think the new car market would have to exceed 10% before investors smell opportunity. The early investors will be in the best position but there will still be shake out as with any new industry.
