I once did a wedding where I had to use the house speakers. They were awful. Dreadful in fact. Little bass and very poor tops. Yet the guests and bride/groom had the best time. I realised in that moment, that our obsession with speakers, brand, size, colour, shape etc. is another of the things that we convince ourselves make a difference. Don't get me wrong, good speakers are important, but not nearly as much as we think. I carry a pair of RCF Evox 8's and I think they are great. The punters cannot tell the difference so I do not obsess over them. If they were to fail, I think I would go for the 50's because they are easy to set up and flexible in wedding situations.

Thank you for your channel. I have been enjoying your content. I've been running a variety of different point source tops and subs for years now. Every time I try to get on the Evolve column array band wagon it doest happen for me... I love the look of them & the ease of set up I really would love to own a set. The one thing that holds me back is that I've learned over the years you can always turn a big speaker down but theres only so much you can turn a small speaker up.... Maybe Ill get to own some columns one day 😁

I just turned 49 years old and I'm in pretty good shape. I run a pair of QSC K10.2 and now a pair of KS118 (previously one). It's easier to have a bigger, scalable system cover a small event with ease than a smaller system cover a bigger event under strain, so I decided to go with tops/subs that could handle anything I would need, large to small. I completely agree on the versatility of tops/subs. You can run tops only (pretty much never, but possible), one sub, two split subs, two clustered subs, two cardioid subs, so lots of options. Redundancy is important too. If there's a failure on a column array, the whole thing is gone. Also, the footprint of the tops/subs is only a little bit bigger than the columns, depending on the deployment. Yes, at 100 lbs each, the subs are heavy, but they're heavy enough I'm mindful to NOT lift them. They tilt and roll 98% of the time, so I may actually do less lifting than if I had a lighter sub I felt I could "handle". The clean headroom and low extension are wonderful and well worth the extra weight IMO. Love your videos and that's a sweet dog! The white speakers are gorgeous.

One day, Donny, you will leave the 1970's technology behind - which is what point source speakers are! Like I say, over 15 years now with column line array speakers and I'll NEVER go pack to point source again!

@@williamthesoundguybalestri1745 I do have an LD Maui 28 G2 and I really enjoy it. It gets loud and goes really low. Right now I use it for ceremonies, but it would also be perfect for some smaller venues I frequent. I do hope to add a second at some point. I do really love it. But, I wouldn't use them for a 4000 sq ft room and expect them to handle the deepest lows in EDM with appropriate volume and clarity and headroom to spare. What's the largest room you play with your column array and what type stuff do you play? I do lots of large barn type venues or indoor venues about the same size.

I went thru the same decision process. At this point in my DJ career, I decided to try and make things easier on me to make it enjoyable. If DJing stops being enjoyable than I am out. In my city there are plenty of venues that have steps and no elevators. If I do subs, I have to bring roadies along with me. When I first got the Evolve, I was really impressed by the speed of the setup and breakdown. No roadie needed. Often only 1 trip from the car using a cart. While the system wasn't crazy loud, it did the trick. Truth be told most people are more into the tracks that you play rather than the sound of your system. But for me I had a need for more bass than the Evolve had so now I often bring a sub. I say often but not everytime. I did a gig at a senior citizen home, no sub needed. I also did a store opening gig, no sub needed with no dancing. So a system like the Evolve handles what 80% of what us mobile DJs do. Now for those who do high school parties or raves, you need 18's plus tops.

@@lavishlifedjsProblem is it means effectively you need 2 PA systems. So if lets say you do a big gig on the Friday and on the Saturday you have a small gig you will have to offload and load a different PA for each night meaning twice the work, money and that's only if you are able to, as not working away from home. Unless you can get away with just bringing an extra sub for the bigger gig but line arrays possible haven't got the throw for larger events. It may have had a fault or been set up wrong but I did hear a twin bose line array system distorting heavily possible in an effort to be heard at a larger gig. A compromise for a smaller lighter PA might be something like a quality sound and powerful 8" or a 10" top with a 12" or 15" sub.

I use one Evolve 30M for 99.8% of my gigs. I am a one man band playing keys, LH bass with a drum machine and a harmonizer. It is light, easy to carry, sounds great, sets up in a flash. It's not as beefy as the 50M, but works great. I have recently done some outside gigs with it. It didn't disappoint me and got many compliments on my sound. If I play a larger venue, I bring my EV ZLX 12Ps tops and my EKX 118SP 1300 watt sub. Since I have owned the 30M, I have not had to break out the big boys yet.

@@Nestico87 Yes, I have a handful of vids up on KZbin under my stage/project name: kzbin.info/door/4v0_9HuXJiHgsDYlGWK4iw. They're just raw clips taken by my wife's iphone and mostly outdoors, so, bear that in mind. I know you didn't ask, but, FYI, EV also has the smaller version 30M, which I also own. I did one gig with it and went right out and bought the 50M. The 50M has more depth, volume and fuller sound. The 30M is punchier and can be a little more "in your face" but I found it was more prone to feedback at the volume level I needed. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just gotten the 50M from the get go. It isn't any harder to haul around and set up, and doesn't take up much more space, so, if you can afford it, I'd say get the 50M. Hope that helps.

Just wanted to follow up on this one year later now that things are more normal after Covid. I now find myself doing fewer gigs and especially fewer weddings. I would say that before 80% of my gigs were weddings. This is where the Evolve 50, Evox and other similar systems really shine. The setup is much faster and it sounds good enough to cover the smaller dancefloor that we see at wedding venues. But now only 20% of my gigs are weddings. I am doing mostly parties. I did a few parties using the Evolve but I ended up adding a sub to it. Still it just didn't have that in your face loudness that a point source system has. Also just about all of my gigs this summer have been outdoors where an extra loud system is preferred. Luckily I have both types of systems but if the wedding bookings don't pick up, I have no real need for the Evolve. I hate to see it just sitting every week. I will probably sell it by the end of the year. Luckily the prices are way up on the Evolve systems.

Hi I'm from Durban South Africa. I love the comparison. Really surprised at the clarity and more open sound on the evolve. So I did an islamic wedding over the past weekend (12th of November 2022). I used the Yamaha mg due to my soundcraft ui being unavailable for that night. I noticed the elx200-12p and the ekx15p which I used actually had less detail and did not hav the clarity and crispness as using the soundcraft. I wasn't such a happy chap that night as the clarity I usually get was just not there no matter how I tried to tweak it. Just my suggestion, try a different mixer and see if it will improve the sound. I heard a performer at Suncoast casino singing on the evolve 50 and you're right it does not go very loud. However it did not have the fullness like the elx or ekx setup, it was set up on stage however so it was high up.

A different EQ setting for the ELX to match the system on the right (Evolve) might be the solution. The ELX's bottom end is too loose but that's fixable. Just roll the lower mids as well as the lows down a tad, you'd have the power and clarity without the rumble. I don't think it'd be perfect bc the cone surface areas aren't the same, but it should be close . . . oh you might give the highs a slight tweak too. Just my 2 cents, fwiw. And thank you for going through the trouble to do the video. It was helpful.

Thanks for this video. I had an elx112p and elx118p sub set up but found myself leaving the subs at home due to weight/overkill. I moved to evolve50s as an upgrade on the elx112p (w/o sub). I sold the subs but couldn’t bear to get rid of the 112sp (love their warm sound). Any thoughts on using the 112sp with evolve50 subs if I need a little more than the evolve50 alone? It's simple math - if you only have X amount of money to spend, spend it on the gear that will help you get through more events - meaning the bigger ones. Then if you have more money to spend - get the gear that looks better and is easier to set up but can only be used on some of your events. One more element that gives the bigger speaker system the edge imo is the ability to raise your speakers higher which is crucial if you have a packed dance floor or if you need for the sound to travel a long distance. Nice video - and yes, many people are probably debating this very issue as columns become more popular. I will note from experience, one of the biggest downfalls of the Evolve and other fixed-height column arrays is just that - their height is not adjustable. The EV ELX 12P can be raised up another 6"-12" over people's heads - which makes a HUGE difference when trying to get sound to the back of a room. This is where RCF with the EVOX, DB Tech with their ES series and FBT with their CS1000 got it right - tops are all height adjustable. I see far too many DJ's and live sound ops with speakers far too low, and in many cases, far too close. I would caution anyone to think long and hard before buying a fixed height column unless you have other means at a gig to raise it up.

I guess as strictly an event DJ it's not much of an issue. But as a musician who used to fill the gaps with dj gigs and running karaoke (we all do what we have to to pay the bills 😅) it's really hard to beat the portability and quick set up of the evolve. To me the evolve has higher fidelity and the array setup makes coverage less of an issue in weird club setups too. But the kicker on the money side is you don't need a separate mixer. You don't need a snake to mix from front of house and you don't need to setup the wiring for a separate mixer in general. You probably don't really mess with too many mic cables so it's probably not as big of an issue. I have a set of passive JBL 2 15s and I've got a powered ev 15 and I've ran a ton more of different things from Yorkville to qsc. From mackie to yamaha mixers. Also time is money. I can have music up and going with the evolve in less than 10 minutes with no issue at all.

I believe bose was one of if not the first to do the towers and im not sure what the original marketing was saying but probably singer songwriter style gigs. The amount of inputs and the volume 100% make these a fine option for even a full band in a small to medium maybe even larger bar with 2. If I was still doing dj style stuff for bars or the odd wedding (those suck) I'd be more than happy with one or two of these vs toting In my 90 pound jbl s . And rack and mixer and all the wires. One wire from my laptop , one or two mic cables and a power cable and im done. Hard to beat that.

5/600 people? Really wish to believe this would work for me, but I have huge reservations. For my 600p gigs, I usually do 8 tops and very likely 3 twin driver subs. Hello, I’ve been in the Dj business for 10 months and I have both the Ev 18 subs paired with 2 qsc k12.2 and honestly they clip easily , they did okay at some events like my own high school events or , small 100 people events but they just clip to easily, not sure if it’s the way I connect them. If possible can you show us how you connect your system. Love the videos 🙏🏻. Thinking about upgrading to way bigger subs.

First, I’m no expert so take this with caution. Seems like you might need something with a little more headroom and/or more sound reinforcement. Almost all of my DJ friends use and swear by the K12s. Most also use the original version so I’m not sure if that makes a difference. Also check out RCF speakers…The higher line speakers are incredible.

if ur not using an external mixer then that's why your system is clipping. A lot of DJs don't know this. When you connect your sound system straight into your controller your controller is not beefy enough to drive your sound system you must add an external mixer. I use a Yamaha MG12XU Mixer it gives you a lot of headroom with plenty of power to drive your sound system without clipping, so invest in an external mixer.

The point source speakers are 1970's technology! I haven't used point source speakers in over FIFTEEN YEARS! If you need more sub, get an additional powered sub, but get out of the point source world. The sound doesn't travel as far as the sound goes in all directions - and SOME go to the audience directly. Plus you have only a few speakers do all of the work reproducing the full range of frequencies. Column speakers do a much better job thanks to the "constructive interference" element of line arrays. If you want to make a real comparison, go back like 50 to 75 feet and record that sound! If you really wanna get great column speakers, go Turbosound IP3000 instead. 17 speakers plus twin 12" subs per column!

@@lavishlifedjs I have NOT done a head-to-head comparison. But... IP3000 is DOUBLE the wattage, and has 16 neodymium 3.5" speakers instead of 8, and DUAL 12" subs instead of a single 12", plus a pair of tweeters on the IP3000 to NONE on the EV50. And the price of the two are virtually the same! So you do the math! IP3000 wins double!
