At least in Britain it costs twice as much to operate as a petrol car or diesel. No subsidies. EVs need to stand on their own four tires.

And It's only that way because they raised the tax rates so high on ICE vehicles to get people into EV's to begin with. Road Tax, Fuel Tax + the price of fuel itself, ULEZ, lower insurance for EV's... it's all artificially expensive. They'd better not add "EV subsidy tax" to us ICE owners too.

My state in Australia introduced a EV Rebate on New Years day 2024. Talk about late to the party. The only federal incentive which exist is Higher Cut Off Threshold for Luxury Car Tax, still the same % rate. Basically until very recently there was no financial purchase incentive.

Thats just wrong David. I have an EV and a diesel car and it costs me 11p a mile for the diesel and 5p per 4 miles in my EV when I charge at home over night. Granted if you charge at a super charger all the time (why would anyone do that) it makes zero sense but as my EV has a 260 mile real world winter range, I never need to super charge. The fuel savings covers over half the EV monthly loan. I have had two EV cars and I really like driving them and saving a fortune on servicing costs is a nice bonus as well.

My wife is Danish and I lived in Denmark for two years. At the time, 2/3 of the price of a new car in Denmark was taxes. Before I moved back to the US I bought a new 2007 Saab 9-3 Aero wagon 6spd using European Delivery. With the discounts and everything, it was $35k. If I had purchased the car in Denmark, it would've cost $100k. Because of the taxes, Danes tended to keep their cars for a long time. In the 2010s the government lowered taxes on new cars in a bid to get the older cars off the road and to get people to buy newer, more efficient cars, and many people did. In 2018 I saw a lot of hybrids and EVs on the roads. But a lot of people went out and bought the Porsche's, Mercedes, and BMW's they wanted, but were taxed out of reach. The European Union has also been trying to phase out diesels, but every rental car I've had in Denmark during the last 10 years has been a diesel.

The European EV sales plunge is directly attributable to the fall in gas prices / the rise in public EV charging prices. Not everyone can charge at home. There is genuine range anxiety, and on the secondhand market EVs have tanked. I just bought a 3 year old 20k mile VW ID3 for 35% of its new price - I'll keep it forever, no depreciation angst here! We only get BYD in the UK, but on continental Europe I see so many spurious Chinese EV brands all fighting for sales. Right now around the corner there is a NIO showroom here in Berlin. The cars look amazing, but would I buy one? Hmmm....

Car sales increased in the UK. New cars sales are up 5.1% in 2024 year to year. EVs up 10.5%, Hybrids up 17.9%, plug in hybrids up 24.9%, Petrol up 0.8% and diesels continue their fall down another 13%. The big winners are clearly PHEV and HEV. For example if you want a Toyota RAV 4 it is hybrid or plug in hybrid only. The basic Honda Civic is only available as a 2L hybrid.

Posting from Europe here… Please, do not insult us with arguing that the hideous little electric bin is ideal for us! Where I live, these tiny little appliances wouldn’t be able to cross the speed bumps! For most of Europe, the range between a small hatchback like the VW Polo and the E-Class estate would be ideal, but of course people prefer SUVs now, taking away share from the C-Class/E-Class segment (and whatever the competition is). Young people, the elderly and people buying second or third cars prefer smaller hatchbacks, which are also popular in the southern countries where governments penalise larger cars. But even there, you hardly ever see anything close to those dysfunctional tiny washing machine on wheels.

The Tesla Model Y is produced in multiple locations around the world, including: Fremont, California: Tesla's first factory, which began producing the Model Y in January 2020 Giga Shanghai, China: Tesla's first factory outside the United States, which began producing the Model Y in December 2020 Giga Texas, Austin, Texas: A 2,500-acre facility with over 10 million square feet of factory floor, which began producing the Model Y in late 2021 Giga Berlin, Germany: Began delivering Model Ys in March 2022. So no if you buy a model Y in America it's not manufactured in China. Only 5% of Tesla's parts are made in China making it the most American built car on the road.

There was a surge of EV sales prior to the removal of subsidies which distorted the statistics as those buyers were not in the market this year. This somewhat exaggerates the fall in sales. It’s not just infrastructure, people here in EU are not buying BEV because of their price. Without incentives a BEV is not worth it over a ICEV. With 20K€ you can buy a Dacia Duster, with LPG that is far better in every area than the closest BEV for sale in that price range. Also diesel powered cars over here still offer a great advantage in terms of affordability. I own 2 BMWs, a 530e and a 318D, and the diesel is still the best all rounder. By the way, 2023 saw the EU car market share dominated by ICE cars, if i remember correctly, 80% of cars sold were ICE, HEV and PHEV, so no surprise at all for this drop.

6:20 That looks really close to my 2020 Ford Escape Titanium which I got used in 2022 for $31,000 after I totaled my 2015 Mustang I had bought brand new for $27,100. How much is the "Yawn"?

I would buy a tiny cheap Chinese EV if it were cheaper than a golf cart. But I’d never cross shop one with comparable cars that are sold in the USA. And I wouldn’t cross shop any EV with a comparable gas car.

The infrastructure isn’t just not there, the infrastructure to support the charging network is decades away, and will always be decades behind. The political climate necessary to build electrical infrastructure is not the political climate to warrant its necessity, and the political climate that makes it necessary is very resistant to the construction of electrical infrastructure.

So far the Chinese EVs are relatively expensive in Europe compared to their homeland price. I would be very worried about depreciation. However you see them occasionally. I think MG (not British anymore) is probably the most successful one. I tested their Marvel R but it felt half finished. It was 37 990€, cheaper than Model Y SR but not better value for sure.

In a recent survey in the UK where thousands of car owners responded , MG came top of the most unreliable cars, That includes their EV's and ICE cars.

Keep in mind that these Chinese electric cars will be a bit more expensive once you have to ship them into the U.S., so it may start at around $10,000 instead of $5,000, which means you would pay $20,000, which is still pretty good compared to it's competitors, of which there aren't many at that price point, or even near that price point for that matter!

$20k for a car that you need to import yourself, has Chinese build quality, and has zero parts or service support anywhere in the country is not the best idea. I'd watch Hoovie try tho

What a bunch of absurd nonsense. "expensive to charge" is not realistic. Level 2 Slow charger is still much cheaper than Fuel.

Also, options prices on luxury cars are insane. Apple/Andoid connectivity as a paid option, really? That's like the 4-digit non-optional delivery fees. Ferrari allows you to skip that, but you need to come to Italy, I understand.
