At least in Britain it costs twice as much to operate as a petrol car or diesel. No subsidies. EVs need to stand on their own four tires.
@starfox_wr-45e93Ай бұрын
And It's only that way because they raised the tax rates so high on ICE vehicles to get people into EV's to begin with. Road Tax, Fuel Tax + the price of fuel itself, ULEZ, lower insurance for EV's... it's all artificially expensive. They'd better not add "EV subsidy tax" to us ICE owners too.

Thats just wrong David. I have an EV and a diesel car and it costs me 11p a mile for the diesel and 5p per 4 miles in my EV when I charge at home over night. Granted if you charge at a super charger all the time (why would anyone do that) it makes zero sense but as my EV has a 260 mile real world winter range, I never need to super charge. The fuel savings covers over half the EV monthly loan. I have had two EV cars and I really like driving them and saving a fortune on servicing costs is a nice bonus as well.

My wife is Danish and I lived in Denmark for two years. At the time, 2/3 of the price of a new car in Denmark was taxes. Before I moved back to the US I bought a new 2007 Saab 9-3 Aero wagon 6spd using European Delivery. With the discounts and everything, it was $35k. If I had purchased the car in Denmark, it would've cost $100k. Because of the taxes, Danes tended to keep their cars for a long time. In the 2010s the government lowered taxes on new cars in a bid to get the older cars off the road and to get people to buy newer, more efficient cars, and many people did. In 2018 I saw a lot of hybrids and EVs on the roads. But a lot of people went out and bought the Porsche's, Mercedes, and BMW's they wanted, but were taxed out of reach. The European Union has also been trying to phase out diesels, but every rental car I've had in Denmark during the last 10 years has been a diesel.

The European EV sales plunge is directly attributable to the fall in gas prices / the rise in public EV charging prices. Not everyone can charge at home. There is genuine range anxiety, and on the secondhand market EVs have tanked. I just bought a 3 year old 20k mile VW ID3 for 35% of its new price - I'll keep it forever, no depreciation angst here! We only get BYD in the UK, but on continental Europe I see so many spurious Chinese EV brands all fighting for sales. Right now around the corner there is a NIO showroom here in Berlin. Where I live, these tiny little appliances wouldn’t be able to cross the speed bumps! For most of Europe, the range between a small hatchback like the VW Polo and the E-Class estate would be ideal, but of course people prefer SUVs now, taking away share from the C-Class/E-Class segment (and whatever the competition is). Young people, the elderly and people buying second or third cars prefer smaller hatchbacks, which are also popular in the southern countries where governments penalise larger cars. But even there, you hardly ever see anything close to those dysfunctional tiny washing machine on wheels.

It’s not just infrastructure, people here in EU are not buying BEV because of their price. Without incentives a BEV is not worth it over a ICEV. With 20K€ you can buy a Dacia Duster, with LPG that is far better in every area than the closest BEV for sale in that price range. Also diesel powered cars over here still offer a great advantage in terms of affordability. I own 2 BMWs, a 530e and a 318D, and the diesel is still the best all rounder. By the way, 2023 saw the EU car market share dominated by ICE cars, if i remember correctly, 80% of cars sold were ICE, HEV and PHEV, so no surprise at all for this drop.
