The Incomparable Eva Cassidy. Gone much too soon but left us so many beautiful moments to savour.

There is a live version of this floating around, that if you can believe it, is even better

That "instrument" is her voice mimicking a trumpet

My favourite Eva Cassidy song - and I have everything she laid down. But I'm a Blues fan from waaaaay back so no surprise. To answer your question - the instrument you heard at the end is Eva Cassidy. Aparrently she can not only sing like an angel and play a mean guitar, she can also metamorphose into a harmonica at will.

Such a great song, full of power and energy and so very different than her most well know song Over the Rainbow. Eva is also doing the background vocals, and it is incredible to me that Eva couldn't get a recording contract even with all her skills and talent. Life isn't always fair. Thanks for showcasing Blues in the Night as it deserves as wide an audience as possible.

Autumn Leaves is one of her best -- there's a live version from the same Blues Alley concert of 1996.

Powerful! You might also like to check out her performance of “San Francisco Bay Blues” which is a live performance she did at a place called “Pearl’s” back in 1994(I believe.) The video is grainy, but her voice and blues guitar are wonderful!! I love everything this lady has done, but I always feel grief as well as joy when I hear her,as she died so young. With this song,Eva also did the background voices. There is a book out that was written by family and friends that has great information on her life and many talents!

You wouldn't know from Over the rainbow that Eva had this much power and soul. Great singer finally getting her dues. A couple of other soulful performances I think you would like. Joan Osborne doing What becomes of the broken hearted live with Motown house band The Funk Brothers and Darlene Love doing River deep mountain high on the David Letterman show.

There's a big contrast between the two songs, tone wise but Eva was great..& I'll definitely check out your suggestions, Frank!
