On this episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington and Eva Longoria Bastón travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to Dodd Street. This is where Eva got her start as a passionate activist, her and her family relied on Community programs for resources, but also gave back into these programs through volunteerism. It’s where she got her taste for business, becoming a mini entrepreneur by selling frozen Kool Aid for a profit. And finally, the street she grew up on was where she learned the meaning of sisterhood, growing up with 3 older sisters, one of which had special needs, she learned what it means to show up for each other and have unconditional love around you.
About Street You Grew Up On: Simpson Street is where our journey begins. It’s the street that Kerry Washington’s mom grew up on in The Bronx, NY. Through this social series, Kerry Washington interviews artists, influencers and industry experts to uncover their origin stories, amplify our common humanity and affirm the value of every individuals' journey, beginning with the “street you grew up on...”

Here’s what I’ve learned watching your podcast: I adore the notion that a conversation with a stranger begins with the street they grew up on. It seems, to me, that this notion becomes the foundation for one’s beginning, and the story of their life is told through the eyes of a child. This notion is so beautiful, kind, and genuine. What if we all used this notion every time we struck up a conversation with someone we just met? Imagine what glorious information we would derive!!! I can’t wait to give it a try!

Like many others, I talk to my kids so much about how and where I grew up and how my life could have been, being where I grew up (seeing their eyes role) and I preach to them how hard I had to work to get them all that they have and it makes me stop and realize that maybe because of what I didn't have gave me the hunger to give them more and I fear that they may not get that same hunger being that I've made it too easy on them. (Also born and raised in Corpus Christi Texas). Two very inspirational women. 🙌

I really enjoyed the interview and this type of content. I grew up and still live in Corpus Christi. I grew up in a similar neighborhood but we were about 50/50 Black and Hispanic. I'm much older than Eva, and definitely our neighborhood was our world and it was lived outside. I often hear Eva say, as she did today and in other interviews that she is "Mexican". I've always been curious if she was born in Mexico; if not why she doesn't say American? I have 2 children and I always taught them to stand firm and claim their right as an American. I taught them never to answer "Im Mexican" or allow others to call them that. I wanted no part in any other ethnic group making me or mine an "other" in our own country. We are proud of our ancestors Spanish/Mexican heritage/culture and are educated in all ways that they contributed and for periods of time colonized parts of this country (the Spanish) and the fact that many parts of America were once upon a time part of Mexico (including all of Texas). I was a kid in the 60's, 70's my teen years. In those days Whites in our city and probably in most of America tried to "other" us by calling us "Meskins". I myself always answered "I'm American", my ancestors came from Mexico, where did your ancestors come from?" I immediately put them on notice, your ancestors came from somewhere else so don't try to "other" me. I know she is very proud of her Hispanic heritage and fights for the rights of marginalized groups, but curious as to why she doesn't claim her right to be just an American.

I was born and raised in Corpus and the street she is talking about was considered the higher class part of town which was southside, so she is full of crap. Westside was lower class. The ABC streets have never been known as the richer part of town. Back then the people with money (of course, not including the ones living on Ocean Drive, that's a different animal) were out in the Carroll HS section and further out, not the Ayers/Gollihar/Sunnybrook/Mansheim streets. That area was not the poorest area but by far not the richer sections. Ask anyone who lived in the ABC section. NOT ONE will tell you that they lived in the richer part of town and believe me, when you grew up in the not-so-rich part of town, you know it! Don't believe me? Pull up Dodd St. on street view. Tell me again how that is the rich part of town.

@@jmartin567 Read my first comment. I said that the area was not a poor area but it was not the upper end neighborhood you seem to remember. I was around 12 in the mid 70s riding my bike up and down the ABC streets. All those streets were my stompin' grounds. I attrnded South Park just down the street. Neither myself nor any of my friends thought we lived in upper class area. Ee weren't poor but we weren't rich. We were middle at best and had a great time in that neighborhood. But ok. If thats how you remember it then i guess your idea of rich neighborhoods were different from mine.

With all due respect, Lawson, I think your opinion is indicative of your age. It can be argued that Agnes St. was once the rich side of town; if you want to look as far back as the 1920's. I am roughly 4 years older than Eva and grew up in the same neighborhood, which would have been considered lower middle class.
