The Cabaret presents Eva Noblezada’s 2021 performance at The Cabaret, part of The Glick Philanthropies Broadway at The Cabaret Series.
Eva Noblezada recently starred in the title role for director Diane Paragas in the award-winning Sony Pictures film, Yellow Rose. She'll next be seen starring in Amblin's Easter Sunday. She won a Grammy and was nominated for a Tony Award for starring on Broadway in Hadestown. It was her second Tony nomination in her first two Broadway roles, following her earlier nod in the title role in Miss Saigon in 2017. She previously starred in Hadestown at the National Theatre in London after being a lead in the West End revivals of Miss Saigon and Les Miserables. Noblezada was a high school student when she was discovered by casting director Tara Rubin at the 2013 Jimmy Awards in NYC.

She is singing about sex and worshipping a body of another. Tell you my sins while you Sharpe your knife means "I'll tell you my sexual deeds while you get an erection" offer me that deathless stab means "put tge erection in me" ..getting stabbed but not dying. It's raw sexual energy and every line is dripping with it. No anger xxxx

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD. I HAVE TO PUT THIS OUT IN THE WORLDDDD. A FUCKIN CONVERSION THERAPY MUSICAL. Okay I know that sounds like tricky territory but what if its got gospely vibes mixed with modern music (like what they did with moulin rouge) that gets progressively angrier (like hunchback of Notre Dame, hellfire mostly vibes). Then every character has like two faces. Like a half and half situation (kinda Jekyll and Hyde musical -ish) where one half is the face they show to others (most of the characters = 1/2 super Christian, 1/2 the 'real' version. Like one guy could be really into fashion design but bc it's not masc, he hides it. Then there's some LGBT characters where the half they show is closeted then the other half, it could loud and proud). Like maybe the main character likes certain popartists (like Gaga or Katy or Taylor or maybe older musical songs) but they break off in the middle of the song trying to convince themselves that they don't want to listen to that. (Like "ooooh I wanna dance with som-jesus is my savior Christian gospel blah blah. Like The Confrontation in the Jekyll and Hyde musical) Big spring awakening vibes mixed with Hunchback. God, that would be such a good idea. If I only I knew how to write music at all 😂😂 I EXPECT CREDIT IF ANYONE RUNS WITH THIS Edit: this comment is edited bc in my excitability originally, it got jumbled and confused. Edited only to add clarification on certain things 💃💃

THIS is how this song is meant to be sang. holy shit. of course hozier is a vocal king but the lyrics of this song suit it better to a woman in my opinion, it captures the essence of "forbidden" gay love better than anything else, and let me tell you this girl UNDERSTOOD THE ASSIGNMENT. the PASSION, the fury, the desperation... literally moved me to tears.

as someone who grew up queer under a homophobic pastor father I have a visceral reaction every time i hear this song. it rises things in me, pain, anger, bits of joy and relief. this was such an incredible and powerful take on this song "No masters or kings when the ritual begins There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean"
@ferntella

I think the music video is filmed from a queer perspective too. I don't know why they didn't parallel the message in the song too though.
@scottnewman522
@scottnewman522 Жыл бұрын
@@ferntella when the lyrics are viewed from the perspective of hidden secretive queerness in my opinion it parallels beautifully. Even before I saw the MV the lyrics broke me bringing back memories of my teenage years. Forgive the coming rant about my personal feelings with listening to this song: His lover is always “she” to protect them both. “I should have worshiped her sooner” a desire to have broken free from faiths chains sooner “We we’re born sick, you heard them say it” being told day in and day out that queers, and unknowingly that YOU are wrong and need to be made well. “I was born sick, but I love it. Command me to be well” for me this line brings back the shame in feeling good in my queerness. The fact you’ve been told horrid things about yourself that you don’t feel and not knowing why. WANTING god to fix you to take it away. Crying to sleep begging and pleading with a man in the sky. And the big kicker for me, “I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife” when I confess to you, you will scorn me. You will hate me. When I tell you these sins you will attack and berate the very aspect of my life I’ve already been fighting against for years and years, Your knife only killing me faster. But I also listen to this song and feel relief that I did make it out, and that I can use my experiences to guide others out. “In the madness and toil of that sad, earthly scene: only then am I human, only then am I clean.” Making out into “the darkness” of the world I felt alive and free of the first time. Getting to guide others there helps a lot with deconstructing my own traumas and pain from the church. Long ass rant I know, just have very passionate feelings about this song and it’s lyrics. They may not be the intended message but by god the message I received from my perspective was world shattering.

More people can learn the piano in 2 years than singing like this (but that's just because singing skills are so goddamn tied to your god-given voice capabilities). As for the arrangement, it's nothing special either. Don't get me wrong, piano accompaniment is necessary here, and the pianist did a fine job, but it's not the thing that makes a performance special.

Absolutely amused at all these comments not even understanding the original song or how much she slayed this. Amazing

Never really cared whenever the original song comes on the radio, but whoaa this is like listening to a whole different song!! Broadway performers really know how to put emotions into Every. Single. Word. Amazing performance, Eva 😍✨

I've commented on here before, but I wasn't in love and slightly drunk then (ok I might have been slightly drunk, but I wasn't in love). I love the song no matter who sings it but Eva with her outfit and her perfect diction sends me over the top. She is an amazing singer, person, woman (add your own words here LOL). If I get the choice to listen to only one song in eternity (heaven or hell) it is Eve Noblezada singing this song in my ear forever. Thank you Miss Eva, you are amazing!!!
