From Wikipedia: Inspector Sands is a code phrase used by public transport authorities in the United Kingdom, including Network Rail and London Underground, to alert staff and other agencies, such as the police, to an emergency or potential emergency such as a fire or bomb scare without alerting the public and creating panic.[1][2] The exact wording depends on the station, and the nature of the incident, for example "Would Inspector Sands please report to the operations room immediately" or "would Inspector Sands please report to platform 2". The automated public address announcement can be generated automatically by the station's fire warning system, or can be triggered from the station control. The message audio file is usually stored as the primary standard emergency announcement on the station PA/VA system. The message may indicate that a single fire alarm call point in a public area has been operated. If an automatic fire detector in a non-public area is operated, or more than one device or zone reports a fire, the system will start the evacuation procedure and the fire brigade is automatically called. The announcement can be triggered by the station controller to alert station staff of other incidents which need urgent attention. The automated nature of the announcement and its high priority means that it has occasionally been known to cut into manual (lower priority) announcements being made by station staff. "Mr Sands" has long been used in theaters as a code for fire, where sand buckets were used to put out fires. The word "fire" backstage would cause alarm to either performers or audience.

Note at 0:06, they paged "Inspector Sands." This is code for a fire alarm so that they don't unduly alarm people in case it is a false alarm, and for them to get their staff in place for an evacuation (note how quick the TfL employee in the orange vest got to the platform).

if the station is in emergency the doors wont open. the train will stop due to a train in front but doors stay shut. this is because it risks people getting off the train and more people to evacuate.
@williamhuang83093 жыл бұрын
This is true when in a fire emergency. The fire is in the station, so it has to be somewhere between the exit and the platform. You need to walk through all the areas of the station to get to the exit, of which one of those must be on fire. So yes, safer in a real fire emergency. Even if the station has multiple ways out, you can't risk it because there would be many places where there could be a fire.

I travelled through that station daily for 7 or so years, thanks for reminding me what it was like. It was lucky it wasn't during the rush hour as there are huge numbers using the station then. You can see the British way of using underground staircases, one line usually to the right of the people is the slow lane with the other for the fast people. This way people who have to catch the next train can get up/down the stairs quickly. YES IT IS VERY ANNOYING when someone doesn't know the system and block both sides of the stair way.

This happened to be in London Bridge just before I went up the Shard. I was freaking out, scared it was like some terrorist attack or something xD . can someone here please explain something to me? According to a story i was told, someone i knew had worked in a clothing store in a shopping centre. she told me that whenever there was a fire alarm, before the alarm played, a old classical song was played through the in-store speakers. this was apparently a secret alert for all the workers to prepare for an evacuation without alerting the customers. whenever they heard this particular song, they had to calmly prepare to evacuate. can someone tell me if they've heard a similar story, or if they can get me some more information on this please? (i know how similar it is to this video and the whole inspector sands pre warning thing, but i wanna know if they really DO have a similar kind of "pre evacuation warning" for staff.

Orrrr becuse of the train's automatic nature (that line uses automatic trains), the train had to stop because of the train programming? The driver cannot override the system until the train's doors are ready to open. In this instance, we can see the train pull in, and stop completely. The stopping means it's ready for the driver's next instruction, in this case, to set off.
