Thanks for the content! I’ve been looking at getting one of these filters. Which do you suggest for shooting video? I’ve been thinking about going 1/4 because it seems like the 1/8 might be too subtle for me. I’ve never used one but at 100 dollars or more for the 82mm size that I’ll purchase I don’t want to have to buy twice. Thoughts?

Learned this from Vuhlandes awhile ago and I’ve never looked back. I keep a 1/4 BPM on for photography at almost all times it makes for beautiful softer images but not in a bad way, still very sharp too if that makes sense. It’s adding a little extra magic for sure!

Apparently Tiffen made the different Black Pro-mist filters for different focal lengths. I saved this comment from another video. It might be useful for some: A common formula for using Pro-mist Filters is 1/2 Pro-mist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro-mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above.

I’ve owned and used a Black Mist for a while for both video and landscape photography. For photos, anytime you have hazy, soft light, it really helps bloom the light, similar to adding negative Dehaze in Lightroom. I got in the habit of shooting photos with and without the filter just to make sure I get proper coverage.
@Ryan_Wiseman Жыл бұрын
I got a few vintage lenses, so the 1/8th strength would be good given the lenses of mine already get a decent amount of bloom. I really am curious to just how much a 1/8 filter would soften the falloff of the bloom, since they tend to bloom much harder than modern lenses. If I had more modern glass, I'd probably roll with 1/4th strength

The glow is called “halation” they’re very good. However, pro mists and glimmer glass can have gross looking bokeh when you have large bokeh shooting wide open. I personally like pearlescent filters because it basically does the same as the pro mists for the halation, contrast reduction and skin softening without messing with the bokeh.

I've been using a Black Pro Mist 1/4th for about a year for photography and video, and the effect is just 😍. The only downside is when you are filming directly at the sun, the halation is often too strong even with a 1/4th strength ^^, or sometimes you lose too much contrast and the image becomes quite unusable. I do love the look and feel it gives to my content 👌.

Can I add a filter on another one without adapters if they have the same size, for instance 77mm? so I’d like to put a black mist on a 77mm diameter lens and then a nd+cpl filter on the black mist. Thank you for explaning I really appreciated! ☺ I have a question for you, thank you in advance for answring... I would like to use the lens Sony 24-105mm on my Sony A7IV, then I would like to apply a Nisi Black Mist on it, and on the black mist I’d like to put the ND64 6stops + CPL integrated filter by Nisi. Will I make a mess of my photos and videos? Would this be a bad choice to make? Is the 24-105mm G really less sharp, bidimensional, sad looking and not good in night, low light or indoors situations? Cause my intention is to get a tridimensional, cinematic looking on my photos and videos.

Is there any way to get a Tiffen Black ProMist filter on an Irix 15mm 2.4 with a 95mm filter thread to keep a small profile of the setup? Tiffen here don't sell the size 95mm unfortunately... The Irix also has a rear gel filter holde however, so is it possible to use that slot instead maybe? To somehow cut a small filter to size and have it at the rear of the Irix? I will also use a Speedbooster and is there alternatively a possibility to put a filter in there somehow instead? I wish to keep a small profile to my camera setup with a wide angle lens like this but still have a Tiffen Black ProMist filter on it. Any thoughts?

Hey Evan! Nice video again. I‘m watching your KZbin vids for a while now and I can really see a progress in the overall structure, b-rolls and just the whole concepts of your videos. But one thing you always do, maybe it‘s just a personal feeling; but if you want to show like a comparison or just a simple image you‘ve taken it‘s always like a blink of an eye and it‘s gone. For example in this video I would have loved to see the picture of the neon sign maybe in splitscreen, maybe in slideover or something like that or just 3 seconds longer each. I hope you get what I‘m saying. Last but not least, I love the style of your pictures. Not just the composing and the theme, but the whole edit. I can‘t even describe. They don‘t look like typical Instagram shots you see, they have a persona. I always know: that‘s a Ranft haha. I hope one day I‘ll shoot and edit in my own style on the level you do sir. Cheers from Germany 🙌📸

My subjects faces and eyes look like they were taken with a shutter speed that was too slow. I ended up using Topaz sharpen to get usuable images. What are the key's to using this to get the extra softeness but not to ruin the shot? I'm now scared to try it again. This was not a paid shoot or I wouldn't have gambled on it.
