The timeliness of finding this is phenomenal. I just had this conversation with my 86-year-old aunt, a very wise woman. She said, Lanie she calls me, don't forget to pick the apples while you still have the energy to do so,she said. She said this when I talked about how much I enjoy working part-time instead of full-time. Her intention was to make sure that I have what I need for my future many years hence. But I knew what Shonda knows: the fact that I play a little bit more enables me to love work more, be more, be a great mother- And most importantly the woman that I want to be and share with the world. Thank you Evan, thank you Shonda!

This woman is truly awesome. I don't watch television, so I never heard of her before now. Despite that, still I notice the creativity of the Shonaland creator. She is alive with character. I think she would excel as a stage actress. Wow, I mean, wow. I'm really blown away, and she's not even acting right now, she's simply giving a public speech. Yet, it's as if she's in character. Look at the audience. They are spellbound, hanging on to each word released from her colorful lips. She definitely has taken possession of what belongs to her like a BOSS. Bravo! Thank you, Evan Carmichael for creating this! It made me cry a little... I don't cry very often. As a business woman, writer, blogger, mom, wife, and philanthropist in my community... I can relate to her saying, " ..When I am successful in one part of my life... I am being a failure in another part of my life." I have learned that no matter what I do... I always feel guilty... guilty for taking the yoga class instead of being at my kid's school project. ...Even though the yoga is what keeps me healthy and sane... Keep shining Evan... looking forward to more of your creativity.

"if I am being successful in one part of my life, I am almost absolutely failing in another." that hit me hard! It's nice to know that we can't do it all. To do one thing is to give up another, but there is a balance. Shonda seems to have that balance and her kids will be better for it. I have more respect for her, not just because she wrote my favorite TV drama of all time, "Grey's Anatomy," but also as a person and model of success. thanks for posting this man!

That doesn't mean that you don't need improvement; it just means that you have to start right where you are and then grow from there.

This video is my sacred meditation for this morning. All of what Shonda says resonates with me. I love doing my “passion” work, which entails planning and filming KZbin videos of the multitudinous things that bring me joy. I stopped writing, the reason for which I will discuss in a coming video. In short, I, too, adore my “passion’s work.” Number One pauses me, straightens my back. It reminds me that I don’t like showing up for the other jobs that take me away from my passions. I don’t enjoy “playing” if it takes me away from my passion for too long. This video and Shonda’s other talks on KZbin return me to myself and gently instruct me to listen, open to life’s simple pleasures and love more. Don’t begrudge the other jobs, for they are a part of my journey. Thank you, Evan, for this video, which I have gift wrapped and zapped to my network!

As mention by Ms. Cruz in comment section, I like what Shonda stated and I am paraphasing 'when I am succeeding in one part of my life, I am failing in another part of my life.' What she said at 1:49 is a WORD! Right now I'm working several jobs to pay the bills so I can cover my acting classes/intensive costs, headshots, etc.

I love Shonda! She is so brilliant! The last rule.. I understand it, I am a workaholic, programmer in other people's eyes. They tell me 'oh lucky you, you have discipline and you like working', that sounds so cold but no it is not true! I am a very passionate person, I love that thrill or 'hum' when I solve something that was bugging me for 2 whole days, I feel powerful! But sometimes I do get stuck and I lose that drive, and it is because I always forget to play... Thank you Shonda for the speech! I will make up my law for playing :)

#5..."Its the doing of the 'thing' that overcomes the fear". I now can explain why I must take a difficult shot to go for the pin behind a bunker over the water. Cause when it counts...I won't be afraid! I love your channel...I never knew who she was until I saw this. I now have a greater appreciation for all the shows I refuse to watch that she has written. They were full with drama that was too close to home. I now can see why they are so popular...

" illuminating thing to happen" reminds me of reading Chronicles of Narnia and understanding what was the author's inspiration for not only that book but the series

That comment about 'across the field of difficulties lies peace' or something like that. Love it. Soooo true in my life and this was a great reminder to that. Fits in with my whole understanding of resistance and what the effects of that are. I'm a new Shonda fan. Not if her work so much as her.

‘’If anyone tells you they do it all perfectly, they are a liar” As a mother of a special needs child and her equally special sibling, senior military wife, entrepreneur, teacher of women, volunteer, non profit organizer, baker, and a woman with needs that were not being met- I fail at so many areas so often. I am glad I am not alone because I don’t feel so guilty now.
