There's no rulebook, life is confusing and messy, and we're all in over our heads from the day we crawl out our mothers stomach to the day we die. If a master like Scorsese himself finds the craft he's dedicated his life to still a great big daunting mystery, than that says something. This is what we can learn from the masters. It isn't easy for them either. It'll never be easy for you.

The "make your own industry" is great. You don't have to be a Hollywood director to make a decent living telling stories on film (or video). New media platforms offer great opportunities for artists to create visual content for businesses, causes, and individuals. Digital equipment is not so hard to get your hands on, and with experience and hustle, you can build a book of clients and get paid for your talent.
