This song communicates how it feels to lose someone who is so close to you that it's as if a huge endless black hole has been ripped right through you and you're left wondering just how you're still alive without that piece of you. You go looking everywhere for the piece that's missing but the only places you'll ever find it are in the past and in heaven... two places that are just too far to ever feel like you can reach, no matter how hard you try. You know youll never be whole again but you at least get up every day and move because there's nothing else you can do.

Did anyone else catch that this song started with the beginning lyrics of “Even in death” and “The Other Side”? “Give me a reason” is the first line from “Even in death” and “Make me whole again” is the first line in “The other side” and she sang them so hauntingly it gave me chills. This is a prayer that comes from pain for her brother, and for all that she has lived through all this time. It is a prayer. She has made her music her refuge, a place where she can vent her pain, her torments, her dreams, a secret place yet exposed to all. Perhaps few have noticed that in many songs she speaks to God and about God. A tormented, traumatized person who cannot and has never been able to accept. The pain for her brother's death resurrected a buried faith. It may seem cruel yet it is through pain that God awakens us from slumber. It is through pain that it pulls us out of our comfort zone or our paralysis. I think she has kept the doors of her heart closed for a long time, even though she longs for a touch from God. She says it herself in many of her songs. Her soul has suffered for a long time being distant from God. And all this time she has tried to ignore, not to think about it. But now the pain has broken through these doors, and she is here talking to God, in her pain. God brought her here. But this is not bad, because our soul is more important than what we can live in this life and people do not belong to us. However, I do not judge it and this is not a judgment. Humanly we suffer a lot, there are unbearable pains and sufferings that kill us. But God did not promise a consistently happy life ... He rather promised that he would be with us. The point is not to be happy, it is to be with God. And that doesn't mean suffering, it means giving priority to the right things. But it is a difficult thought. I understand it deeply. I understand her and identify with her. The pain in her heart is great. I pray that God heals her. Sorry my bad english

This is heartbreaking on so many levels and to know what's behind the song is unbearable. my heart goes out to you Amy

My son, Eric, took his own life 6 weeks ago. This song has an entirely different meaning for me now. It's something you can't understand til you've been through it. There is no pain or loss greater than this. I used to never think of heaven, even as a devout Christian. Now, this life holds nothing for me. And I wait til the day I die and reunite with him. Every day holds nothing but grief. Missing him. 11/19/97 to 02/13/24 Forever 26.

love his women.! She sings from the heart. All the emotion and passion she speaks of. She wrote this song for her deceased brother. Who she was very close too! She inspires me to live everyday to the fullest!. Be appreciative of what you have. Not what you don’t. “if I can’t see your light anymore, cause I’ve spent too long in the dark”

Thanks, Evanescence, for being my life companion since I was a teenager. 15 years have gone by, but still here we are. May we all find the strength to go on. Thank you so much!

I have not cried since I lost my big sister, from leaukimia my best friend, my rock, when I was 10 and she was one month from her 12th birthday. She passed in my mum's arms at home, waiting for an ambulance, no morphine no pain killers, she never complained. Even after 40 year's I can not cry. Or I will never stop... For this song to bring tears to my eye's shows it has a special meaning. Absolutely Beautiful Amy and Evanescence. "In the arm's of the Angel's Michelle, Bonnie, and Robbie," your light will NEVER go out. I will hold you again my beautiful big sister when it's my time to go home. Kindest thoughts from Australia. Thank you. 🕊🕊🕊

Just a week ago my big sister lost her fight with cancer after battling it for 2 yrs. I've been listening to this soundtrack, especially this song in particular to help me get thru this, like I've done with a lot of trying times throughout my life. Evanescence has always had a special place in my heart because of that, for always being with me and helping me then, especially now, and will hold even more of a special place because my sister was the one to introduce me to this band yrs ago. Thank you soo very much Evanescence, for always being there for your fans and supporting us in our best and worst times

What a hopeless emptiness to feel so far from God's light and purpose for our lives. The darkness seems so endless when we experience suffering and grief. These lyrics embody that loneliness with a haunting echo of separation and pain. Truly beautiful and moving.

Such a beautiful and sad song. I hope Amy, that your possible crisis of Faith is restored. Life sometimes brings us terrible pain and loss, but also incredible love and restoration. I hope you feel closer to Heaven soon! Your brother would want that. I want that for you. This album is so good and timely. Thank you so much for sharing your pain, vulnerability and also frustration at where the world is right now.
