I've been looking in the mirror for so long, That I've come to believe my soul's on the other side. All the little pieces falling, shatter. Shards of me, Too sharp to put back together. Too small to matter, But big enough to cut me into so many little pieces. If I try to touch her, And I bleed, I bleed, And I breathe, I breathe no more. Take a breath and I try to draw from my spirits well. Yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child. Lie to me, Convince me that I've been sick forever. And all of this, Will make sense when I get better. but I know the difference, Between myself and my reflection. I just can't help but to wonder, Which of us do you love. So I bleed, I bleed, And I breathe, I breathe no Bleed, I bleed, And I breathe, I breathe, I breathe I breathe no more.

I strongly identify this song as being part of my coming to terms with my asexuality. I was listening to it when I came across the term asexual online for the first time and realized that that’s what I was. This song for me is about how I had been play-acting at being a sexual person for so long that I came to feel like that’s what I was. But I knew the truth deep deep down and it made me worried that if ever I fell in love this person would not understand and would not stay with me. I have since learned that asexuals find and stay in love all the time and even get married. This was about 14 years ago. Edit: The line “Tell me I’ve been sick forever and all of this will make sense when I get better” reminds me especially of how I thought about my asexuality until I realized I wasn’t just an immature heterosexual. I was diagnosed bipolar at five and have kinda had it pounded into me that I “can’t trust [my] feelings,” so my first inclination was that it was somehow wrong and needed fixing. But as another Evanescence song perfectly puts it, “Don’t fix me; I’m not broken.” Ah. This was long winded.

Evanescence was my favorite band when I was in high school, almost 20 years ago. I was deeply depressed. I experienced their music as a comfort and a refuge. But looking back, I can see that their music amplified my pain. I was believing a story: “I am abandoned. I am unloved. I am alone. I am different from others. I cannot be happy. I hate life. I’m not okay. I am hopeless.” And so on. Evanescence’s music reinforced this story in me. It said, “Yes, it’s all true. This is reality.” It was a lens that colored my world. I don’t say this with regret or blame, only acknowledgement. If I had never found Evanescence, I likely would have found something else to reinforce my sad story and amplify my pain. The reason I’m writing this is because listening to “Breathe No More” just now transported me back to my high school days and brought tears of sorrow to my eyes. There is still an emotional charge associated with this music for me. And what that communicates to me is that there is a part of me that is still believing and still trapped by the old story. But I have come to learn that all stories are only stories. We are swimming in mental concepts, unable to see that they aren’t reality because we’re completely immersed in them. They’re lenses coloring our whole world. So this is what I’d like to say to my teenage self, to any parts of me still carrying the old sad story, and to anyone reading this who may be carrying a similar story: Your thoughts aren’t reality. They’re just thoughts. Look around you…everyone you encounter is thinking different thoughts, believing they’re true, and having completely different experiences of life as a result. How can they ALL be reality? They’re not. They’re only stories. If the stories you’re telling yourself are painful, you can stop believing them. That doesn’t mean exchanging the sad story for a happy story, which would likely entail great resistance and would still keep you in thought-based unreality. Rather, it means you can just put the story down and remain in a space of not knowing, which is the closest you can get to reality. If believing that your thoughts are true keeps you trapped in stories, then the way to be free is to respond to your thoughts with a simple “I dunno!” An extended version might look like: “That’s just a thought. Thought isn’t reality. I think I know what’s true, but I don’t know. I don’t know, I don’t have to know, I can’t know, there’s nothing to know, I don’t know.” There’s real peace in that story-less space of not knowing. * steps off soapbox * Peace to you, Evanescence listeners.

While I can’t recall whether I’ve said this before, it still seems to me that I have, but I’ll say it again. I’ve often listened to this album late at night when attempting to go to sleep in my car for reasons I won’t go into. This album is the perfect soother for someone like me who’s been driving late at night, yet needs to wake early the next morning.

These have to be some of the most profound, introspective lyrics I've ever heard. This song is begging to be used for a great film.

This song is so hard, so deep and so harsh that it really feels oppressing while hearing to it. No matter how many years could pass from the first time listened to it.
