I see this movie as Anno saying cute anime girls and big robots are cool but eventually we all need to go touch some grass. There's a theory hinted at in the previous films that the movies aren't actually a reboot but a sequel, and that the world keeps repeating itself. The scene in the first film with Kaworu rising out of one of the many coffins alludes to this theory. To me Mari represents an outside force that's necessary to break the cycle. The bad CG elements of this film are intentional and a homage to Anno's love for tokusatsu like Godzilla and Ultraman since he directed movies for those franchises as well. The ending of the movie is super messy and meta, but I think it was a tonally fitting way for Anno to say goodbye to a series that he put so much of himself into.

Yep, I agree. I have my own theory regarding the eery, uncanny CGI Rei. It represents the blending of 'reality and imaginary' as Gendo refers to this about the nature of Evangelion Imaginary. So I think it was deliberately uncanny beccause if it was too lifelike, too realistic. Too animated, too imgainary.

Congratulations! [claps] One of the longest (and maddest) animated films ever made, that plus the editing must have been brutal. Really appreciated you taking a break and coming back for the long discussion afterwards too, with this and other series you've done it's always very thoughtful. For me, this one and hindsight makes 3.33 less purely frustrating. It's still all utter hoopla and way too meta for its own good, but it's a treat visually and it takes a pretty solid stab at the impossible job of wrapping all this up. Absolutely agree about the village section being possibly the best bit of it all. It captures the longing atmosphere of the series, has some much wanted character and world building, and "I wanted to harvest the rice" is maybe the most human line in the series. The goofy Gendo fight ending I believe is supposed to reference tokusatsu shows, but it doesn't hit. I still can't help but laugh that they decided to shoehorn in a title drop at the end.

Fun fact : Alot of evangelion is inspired from the book of enoch and the spear has the name of the spear that killed jesus.

If you are interested, search for the 14-year blank before 3.0 and you'll get what happened in the world, especially the relationship between Kaji and Kaworu!!

Yeahh, it’s a shame that we couldn’t see the same awesomeness as the original. I am fine with changes when it comes to remake as long as it has the similar vibe but this new movies didn’t feel like NGE to my eyes. BUT, if you trick your brain to believe in the movies are nothing to do with Eva and it’s independent story, I think it’s not that bad as an entertainment. Do I recommend people? Still no especially to people who care about OG lol. Btw I always appreciate your honest review after watching episodes/movies. I think it’s one of the hardest things to do as a reactor is to react something you can’t enjoy fully, so I respect that a lot. Thanks for reacting!

I disagree, I they think the rebuilds feel like Eva and they feel like Anno. I still prefer the OG + EoE

Thank you! ❤ I will be mussing Evangelion’s reactions… Rebuilds is a fanfic that Mr. Ano made based on his own work. With the destruction of the 4th wall at the end and an attempt to convince himself that the era of Evangelion has passed. Everyone needs to leave it behind and move on.

I just binged your entire reaction! I feel quite similarly to you, however I make the assumption that all the "bad" aspects are intentional and self-aware. Basically, the chef gave us a piece of shit on a plate calling it subversive. I genuinely appreciate this concept artistically, but it was not something I enjoyed.

This one is a funny one. It’s the best of the tetralogy for me, but it’s still a mess. It has some truly beautiful stuff in it. But so much of the rest is just a mess.

All the rebuilds felt like that. Some really good additions and changes with awesome animation or just unwelcomed additions and changes with some goofy looking animation. I think every movie failed to hit a consistent mark throughout.
