IMO at the saddest part of Evangelion is that Shinji is depressed and needs someone for him, and Asuka is depressed and needs someone for her, and that they would be perfect for each other, but they never realize it and continue living sad. I personally think that the EoE has a somewhat happy ending because now that Shinji and Asuka are the only two people left in the world, they can love each other and be there for each other and finally be happy.
