Sure the movie has a darker tone and seems cynical on the surface, but it comes to the exact same optimistic conclusion with Shinji finding his self worth and undoing instrumentality.

@@pedrosampaio7349 it makes sense that shinji would act that way, considering the stuff he's been going through in the series. he literally wants to die. however, shinji DOES accept himself, others, and even life. he realizes that in instrumentality, while there might not be any fear or sadness, there is also no happiness. instrumentality is a void. shinji rejects it by accepting the fact that even if he were to be hurt again by trying to connect with others, the joy and love he'd feel from doing so would always be so much more genuine than trying to gain it from staying in instrumentality.

Except it is not the point of the movie. End of Evangelion was made as a response to the backlash of the original series. A response to all the hate mail and death threats that demanded a "better ending" with robot fights.

@@jarjared3522 that isn’t why end of evangelion was made lol. it was going to be the original ending for the series, but due to issues with the budget and stuff they had to separate it into a whole movie instead. there’s a scene in the movie where a lot of letters flashes onto the screen right before instrumentality begins to end, which is thought to be hate mail, but it’s actually praise gainax had received over evangelion. not to say that they DIDN’T receive any hate for the show’s ending, but it’s a common myth that’s been circulating around the fandom

I disagree with your interpretation of EOE. Plot wise it is the same as the last two episodes if you pay close attention, you can see both Misato and Ritsuko dead in the same way they died in the movie. I view the TV ending as the instrumentality, and Shinji's self reflection along with the other characters own version of instrumentality. The movie follows what happens after instrumentality, showing Shinji struggling to apply what he has learned from his experience, because like real life changing is hard. It can also be viewed as a warning to viewers who relate to Shinji to what happens if you don't change. I also disagree that the EOE ending is not hopeful like the TV ending. While the EOE ending certainly is darker then the TV ending, both Shinji and Asuka are alive and choose to live instead of staying in instrumentality with the understanding that life will be hard. As Shinji's mom in EOE says, "If he wants to survive, anywhere could be like Heaven. He has a chance to be happy anytime because he's alive." Overall really good video and wanted to leave a comment to boost it in the algorithm.

Totally agree. I look at the series ending versus the End of Evangelion as being two sides of the same coin. They both complement each other, and neither would be quite as good without the other
@phloopy56306 ай бұрын
I half disagree. EoE and the OG ending are not the same, they are two separate outcomes of the same events. The OG one is the “good” ending, and the EoE ending is the “bad” one. In both, all the events up to instrumentality (as depicted in EoE) happen, but what happens during instrumentality is different. In the OG ending, shinji learns to love himself finally, to embrace the fact that he matters. We do not know if he decides to reform out of the LCL in this ending, but I’d bet he would. In EoE, shinji rejects that he matters and that others want him, and when he reforms out of the LCL, he attempts to kill Asuka. Both are clearly separate endings, shinji’s completely different in both! In one he becomes happy at last, in the other he tries killing one of the people dearest to him after losing everyone else.

i feel like the anime is about excepting that you can and will change as a person while eoe is more about running away from your mistakes and the self destruction mindset that comes with it. eoe is kind like when ur depressed and your succumbing to ur bad traits and habits while the anime is self isolate making you lose ur sense of self they both have positive messages eoe: “you’ll always have the chance to be happy as long as the sun, moon and earth still exist” tv: “you’re truth can be changed simply by the way you perceive it, that’s how fragile the truth for a human is”

For Me watching EVA was one of the best things I saw because at the time I was going through some rough patches in life and listening and seeing both the show and movie, I never felt so understood by the truthful honesty of pain and how going through pain is extremely rough and not talking to someone about it these struggles will hurt more, in which the series helped me out a lot (movie included) and below is how I interpreted it. How I interpreted the movie and the series was that what happened in the film and the final two episodes of the series was that the events we see in the movie are Shinji's Real world perspective while the series final episodes was the mental war Shinji was having inside himself and that when we see Asuka touching Shinji and in the series when Shinji accepts himself is when he moves toward a better future. (sadly the movie is ominous while the show is hopeful) Now I am doing better and seeing this video brings me a lot of joy of someone who understands what EVA's series ending is about, taking that first step, and for me was accepting that pain and speaking about it to close peeps

Pretty solid analysis overall and I'm glad you found the final two episodes so impactful. I just wanted to expand upon one of the points you made with respect to Asuka's final battle in EoE. It can be hard to even notice on your first viewing, because after episode 16, the show just completely captures you all the way to it's conclusion, but Asuka reactivating with Unit-02 and having this incredible battle against the Mass Production Eva's is literally the first victory or even positive moment she's had since episode 12! She is introduced is Episode 8, so she has done nothing but lose for over 70% of her screen time. Let's break it down: Episode 12: Shinji, Asuka, and Rei pull off a miracle victory against Sahaquiel. Episodes 13-14: Asuka doesn't really do anything in these episodes as thy mostly focus on the adults. Episode 15: She has her failed kiss with Shinji which we know from EoE absolutely crushes her. Then, right after that, Kaji and Misato come home and she realizes they are seeing each other again, she feels like she lost to Misato. Episode 16: Shinji is absorbed by Leliel and Asuka is completely powerless to stop it. Episodes 17 & 18: Both episodes deal with Unit 03. First, Asuka has her self worth shattered because Toji, who she views as completely incompetent, is assigned as the pilot of Unit 03, making her feel worse about herself as an Eva pilot. Then, in the later episode, she is easily defeated by Unit 03, literally off screen if I remember correctly which again is a complete embarrassment for her. Episode 19: Again, Asuka is easily crushed by Zeruel. Episodes 20 & 21: Asuka barely present. Episode 22: This is the complete collapse of Asuka. She is brutally mind raped by Arael and is basically completely out of it until the moment before her final battle against the Mass Production Eva's. So after all of that, after all of suffering and self-doubt and self-loathing, seeing her finally, finally winning is so heart warming, and then heart breaking when she is once again crushed, even after fighting so hard. As an Asuka fan, and as someone who sympathies with Asuka a lot, the battle against the MPE's is genuinely hard to watch. She looks so incredibly happy, despite everything, because she finally has found her own self-worth, only to literally torn apart right after. One final thing, a lot of other people have written comments as to why they believe you're incorrect about EoE being a tragic ending, but I'll just leave Yui's final message here as my argument: “Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy. As long as the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth exist, everything will be all right.”
@madmanonyt99436 ай бұрын
The original ending was fine, but the abruptness of it actually caused me to feel little of the impact it was going for. The End of Evangelion is, in my opinion, and true masterpiece, not just as an ending to Eva, but as a film about self-hatred and the painfully real outcomes that come with losing touch with yourself and others, conveying raw emotions in a way that few films have ever managed to. It’s one of my favorite films of all time!

I watched the first 10 minutes of the first episode and was like nope, it was a snooze fest. I was failing to see what people said was so great about this benchmark iconic anime and was disappointed. but as a young adult (20 years old) I went home for the first time in 4 years (yes I left at 16) for thanksgiving last year because my mother had out of nowhere called me a few nights before and asked if id like to see my sisters and I jumped at the chance and I felt so lonely and out of place there I left for a reason and all the memories of why were messing with me and making me feel conflicted and sad and had a lot of downtime so I was on Netflix and decided yea why not I'm gonna watch it I've always wanted too and have down time and that shit resonated It hit so hard to be fucking honest with you it changed me in some way it did effect me so I'm gonna go ahead and say I didn't like Eva until I needed Eva as cheesy as that sounds It took deep conflicting feelings in myself for it to click. Sounds Cheesy but its true.

Ep 25 and 26 wrap up the philosophy but do next to nothing in regards to the world that had built up over the series. Fans of that side complained. I'm happy either way, I live both endings, and it's cool to have a series that has different endings with different ways to interpret them, each still giving lessons.

I think the ending of EoE is just as positive as the ending of the show. In EoE Shinji rejects instrumentality in the hopes that one day he will find happiness and self acceptance, what I think makes this ending more powerful though is that Asuka's caress on Shinji's face physically affirms to him that he isn't alone and that Asuka does care about him, Shinji and Asuka finally able to break the hedgehogs dilemma and find comfort and affection for each other. There are also many scenes in EoE that server the same purpose as the congratulations scene in episode 26, right after the theater scene Shinji flat out tells Rei that he doesn't want a world without individuality even though he knows there will be pain if he is to return back to the normal state of the world; of course its not as abrupt but I think that helps to emphasize our humanity and that it takes time to accept yourself.

I completely agree, the ending of the End Of Evangelion isn't some downtrodden violent nightmare, it's a new world of hope for connection, for love despite the thorns & walls other people put up around their hearts, I think EoE is beautiful in the way that it can be seen so differently, but I just can't get behind it being hopeless, it's only hopeless if you give up & say it's hopeless, as long as you keep living, there is that eternal spark, just like Rei & Kaworu said

Now, I absolutely loved the neon genesis series. But the end of Evangelion, while being a pleasure of animation and self thought, I just find not as great as the rebuild series. The reason I like the rebuild series more, is because it implements the anything unsure, lonely, and dark, can always have a moment of happiness no matter what. Another reason is that the rebuild series shows a ray of something the final parts of Evangelion didn't, hope. Nearing the end of the rebuild series, things start to take a dark turn against the people he holds dear. But somehow it ends up as ending with life. But the fact that they made Asuka and Rea become older than Shinji is a little weird.

I have to disagree with EOE being a pessimistic ending. This is not the first time I’ve heard that but I’d really like to express that I felt the creators successfully conveyed that the “End of Eva” was a new beginning for Shinji. Shinji realized, through/despite the psychological torment, that it was better to give mankind a chance, and to give himself a chance, to love and to be happy. I always found the original series ending unsatisfactory and somewhat dystopian; the plot didn’t really conclude PLUS Shinji didn’t have to take what he learned in Instrumentality to the new world. In the movie ending, Shinji has to come face to face with what he’s done and been put through. Yet despite ALL OF THIS, he decided that being human is a risk worth taking. Feeling emotions as an individual is powerful and it’s worth learning to love others. He sacrificed dull perfection for the joy and unpredictability of life. And for hard-won connection. That ending with Asuka really felt like…for lack of a better term…genesis. In the beginning there was man and woman and all that. I think Shinji will live his next life with gratitude and hope. At the very least, he resolved his emotional conflicts and has that chance, now more than ever.

Good Video 🙂 It's well documented that Hideaki Anno & Co were never keen on making "End of Eva" and "Death and Rebirth". The ending of TV series was very poorly received, to put it mildly. Studio Gainax at the time was bombarded with hate and death threats. The "message" of Eva was not to the liking of japanese fan-community. It's too abstract, too pretentious, too dream shattering? (Eva was mirror to rising Otaku culture) Anno himself was mostly frustrated and angered by reaction, and thus the tone of both movies is very dark.
