Very educational video. Your presentation was excellent & displayed the clear difference in heads

So for years I played DW collectors and one thing they all had in common was "beater slap". There's a certain feel I look for in a bass drum, that punch you feel when the beater hits the head and stays there. I don't know if its the room I'm in, the muffling I'm using, the resonant head not breathing. So I bought a Sonor SQ1, it came stock with a PS beater head. No more beater slap

I actually started with an EMAD on my kicks and was a concert to the power stroke 3. In comparison, the muffling system to me may add a lot of low end to the drum but it’s also achievable with a P3. With that low end though I sacrifice feel, power, and overall volume and tone of the drum. I still, however, go back and forth!

Yeah, either one is a good head. I'm still using the PS3 on another bass drum. I think it comes down to the rest of the drum, the tuning needs and the type of music. It does seem, though, that the EMAD achieves a slightly deeper tone with all else equal.

cool video... I am always torn between Evans EMAD and Aquarian Superkick II's. Usually price is the determining factor between the 2. I have ran 22" bass drums all these years and within 30 seconds, have it tuned perfect. I always run wide open or sometimes use a rolled towel formed into a U to just touch both batter and resonant heads. But I just went to a 24" kick and dang... it's a total different animal. I can't get it tuned to my liking, although I am close. I went from wide open to an Evans EQ pad to a pillow. The pillow gets me close, but I think it's because I have the heads just above finger tight like I have ran my 22's. Everything I see says you have to run 24's tighter. So that's the plan for next week... pull the pillow and start over, this time tuning a little tighter.

It can be frustrating, for sure! And, there can be a big difference between a bass drum played live and one that is tuned for recording.

The gmad. The tray itself muffles slightly so like a G1 with a felt strip sort of. I am a Remo guy but I like emads and I don’t even use a ring and if I do it is around 6” of the thick ring I tape in so it doesn’t fly out upon impact.

I found the emad with the dampening rings really cut down the volume. Ended up using no rings. PS3 style logo head up front. No additional dampening required

That's interesting. I haven't noticed any volume reduction, but I'm also a pretty heavy hitter. Possibly it's a matter of different playing styles.

What's the name of that app you're using to edit your kicker??????

That's just the DAW that I use, called Reason. I really like it because it sort of models the physical world gear on the screen, which suits old guys like me well! You can find more about it here: www.reasonstudios.com/

The difference in sound between your bass drums might have to do with that you have a cage on one kit, the others has the toms monunted on the bass drum. 🤔

I think you're right, that could certainly contribute to a difference.

Thank you for this great video. On my Tama Starclassic B/B I switched from Powerstroke 3 to Evans EMAD and I'll never gonna back to PS3. My bass drum has more BASS now and no plasticky attack anymore.

That's interesting to hear that you had a similar experience on a newer bass drum. Rock on!
