Awesome tutorial!!! I just bought a BMPCC 4K and am learning about what Davinci tools I have available to get the most out of it. This was comprehensive and easy to understand and now I'm excited to practice de-noising on my test shots. Thank you!!

Thanks, another great tutorial. At first I though hm 30 mins, seems a bit much but it was well worth it now that I've watched it. Well structured and chaptered video with good explanations and examples. I applied it to some of my footage already. Previously I never felt the need to denoise, but I def have shots that are just super noisy - I just ignored it so far. I wonder if there's a good way to apply a base noise reduction to a whole video though, just to reduce the worst without having to spend a lot of time tweaking individual shots. Will do some research and experimenting with that now. Edit: grouping clips and applying denoise to the "group pre-clip" level seems to be the way to go for that. I tried to apply it to the timeline level also but that didn't work. I assume because then it can't look at and process denoise on the individual clips (all of which have their own unique environment).

Thanks for watching. And to answer your question, yes, grouping clips is exactly what I would recommend in your scenario. The timeline level node isn't advised because it's also being processed after both the group and clip level nodes, and as I mentioned in the video, NR works best when applied at the very beginning of the pipeline. You could also create multiple groups for the severity of noise in the footage, for example group 1 is for light noise and group 2 is for heavy noise. Then in each of the pre-group nodes, apply the settings and group the clips as you go through the footage.

Great video, really liked the use of luminance qualifiers and RGB splitting for targeting NR. I shoot a lot of night scenes, so a lot of footage very close to absolute black. So I use the luminance qualifier technique a lot to ensure my highlights are left alone. Problem I do have though is getting clean shodows. In shots with static lighting it is a little easier, but shots with lights moving through the scene (cars on a highway at night for example) I find it hard to get rid of distracting noise while still retaining detail and without it looking like mush. Never going to get this sort of footage pristine, but would love to hear any advice on how to approach this deep shadow noise.
@EvanSchneider
@EvanSchneider Жыл бұрын
I would try to expose your nighttime footage brighter than normal to give yourself more flexibility in the grade to target specific luminance values. You can always bring it down, but it's much harder to bring it up as you'll be revealing more noise and artifacting.

forgive my naivety here… jus getting started. i have a timeline node for color mgmt, which applies to all of my clips. a few clips , but not all, need nr to varying degrees. is there a way to use nr at the clip level and position it before the timeline node, since nr works best before cst? thx, -colton 🤟🏼
@EvanSchneider
@EvanSchneider 10 ай бұрын
Hey! Great question. The clip level nodes are always processed before the timeline level, so if you place your NR on your clip nodes and have the rest of your node tree on the timeline level like you have it set up, you’re good to go! Just keep in mind, with timeline level color management, you could get into a tricky situation if you ever need to place a clip or asset that doesn’t match your timeline level colorspace transform.

Hey Evan, thanks for this breakdown. For this one almost finished project I’m trying to just use Resolve for some NR and throw it back to Premiere for the color and export. No matter what color space/gamma, display space/gamma or export tags I use I’m getting a gamma shift on export. Do you have any advice on exporting a clean NR original log clip from Resolve?
@EvanSchneider
@EvanSchneider Жыл бұрын
Definitely! I would need to know more details, but if you're working between Premiere and Resolve on a Mac, you should be working in a Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 output colorspace in Resolve. When you export from Resolve, under "Advanced Settings" in the Deliver page, manually set the Colorspace tag to Rec.709 and gamma tag to Rec.709-A. This should make it so that Premiere will match what's in Resolve.

Nice video Evan, I have a question for you or anyone else in this community. When I imported my Dji drone footage into Davinci Resolve 18.1.4 studio without any nodes. The footage was so grainy unbelievable noise. But I know for a fact my ISO was set at 100, & F4.0. SS60. Here's the sad thing, it looked perfect when viewing it on my iPad. Same good results on my iMac pro. When I put it in FCPX, it had Zero noise on the clip. So what's going on in DR 18.1.4 Studio that's causing the noise?
@EvanSchneider
@EvanSchneider Жыл бұрын
Do you have some soft of automatic color management going on in Resolve? Also, viewing on different screens, the noise can appear more or less prominent.

After applying noise reduction the system is getting really slow. Kindly suggest ways how the system can run more efficiently after applying noise reduction.
@EvanSchneider
@EvanSchneider 4 ай бұрын
Noise reduction can be processor heavy and there’s no way around that. The Temporal NR controls in Resolve are lighter and you can sometimes achieve real time playback using just those. I recommend placing the NR on the first node and then caching that node using automatic or use mode. Once it renders, you don’t have to worry about it and you’ll get fast speeds again.

Does anyone put the 2 types of NR on separate nodes?
@EvanSchneider
@EvanSchneider 6 ай бұрын
I can’t think of many cases you would need to separate them other than procedurally removing noise. Keeping it in one maintains the proper order of operations and simplifies the structure. Plus if you’re caching the node, you only have to worry about one.
