For future reference- when doing something like installing the insulation, it’s far easier to make patterns/templates out of paper or even cardboard first. Then once you’ve got the shapes right on the cardboard/paper (which is much easier to cut and trim to shape) you can just transfer the shapes needed onto the insulation. Plus you only have to do this on half the Landy as it’s a symmetrical shape, so you do one side making the template, then simply flip it over to do the other.

Great job Eva! As a Defender owner, I can recommend checking for water leaks ussually found arround front doors and under the drivers screen. Also look for corrosion into the door frames, bulkhead and rear cross member (your car is looking good taken cared of, but better check now than found the hard way) The only thing I would change in what you do is pop out roof, which on a Defender is a great option. Gives you much more storage space. So I am not talking about the roof top tent, but actual roof opening up. Good luck with the work. :)

How about overall long term reliability and parts availability for a non-mechanical person ? Perhaps, it's just in the U.S. where parts aren't as available and are more costly to to import, but the Land Rovers and Range Rovers have quite the reputation for having a myriad of nagging repair problems and being very costly for even small mechanical issues. The parts alone cost a small fortune to get here.

A few things I would suggest. Before you get everything in the truck, seal and paint the interior. Slabs and 3/4 plywood are great but start to really add up for weight which needs to be considered because you are bringing the rest of your life on board right? Lighting and air circulation is what you'll appreciate the most. Find a balance between being done with the build and leaving some improvements for the road. So Its a good thing you are testing it first before total build-out so you can see what you really need. Make sure you have tools for the road. You are now reliant on the vehicle after all. Water storage and use will become one of your biggest set of chores. Food should be in near air tight containers, as bugs and mice would love to be your new roommates, so fill in the cracks. Solar is way less intimidating than you think by the way. I would quickly jump to Lithium. A 50ah battery and a 100 watt panel would be the minimum to power most of your camera equipment and laptop. Anything more, like a fridge would require at least 100ah of battery storage. This build has great potential, Take your time and make sure you are comfortable. Go down the list of your most important requirements for life and then see what can wait for the road and what can't. Good luck.
@joshuabluett35763 жыл бұрын
Agree with the 100ah battery, due to age of car, it shouldn't have a smart alternator so a cheap dual battery isolator should work. If getting a solar panel, ensure it is hooked up to a regulator

Little tip from a mechanical engineer: at 18:18 you can see that the plywood of the extension for the bed is not resting on the bench but on the hinge. This will put high strain on the screws holding the hinges and the plywood holding the screws. they will most likely wear out and break out. Suggestion: take a few mm of material off, where the hinges are screwed in place. That way the plywood of the extension can rest on the benches plywood instead of the hinges. Also the hinges then don't stick out as much when the bed is foldet out.

19:15 the triangular table supports that fold out seem like they would distribute the load better if they were locked at 180 when swung out. As it is (~135) all of the weight is transferred to the two hinges.

It’s looking good. Don’t beat yourself up it takes time I had a professional engineer do a chassis up rebuild and it took the best part of six months! Going to this much effort would’ve justified having a galvanised chassis and bulkhead as these are the weaknesses in the truck. Also consider having a stainless steel straight through exhaust pipe. FYI there are huge voids in the body of the vehicle that can be utilised as a pull-out drawer that spans the width of the whole vehicle if required for further storage. Roof racks and especially those with a wood platform have a big affect on your mpg. Thank you you have motivated me to get out in my utility vehicle and use it more purposefully.

Depending on what climates you will be in and how much of a morning person you are, you may enjoy attaching your curtains on to a reflectix type foil (in New Zealand we put it on our windscreens to block out the sunlight in summer). It can help in both summer and winter with insulation. I made ours by cutting up the front windscreen reflectix to the shape of the window (we cant by the roll stuff here) and attaching fabric to it with spray glue and a hot glue gun around the edges. We also added some suction cups to hold them in place.

Some items to consider for example to hang your curtains you may consider Velcro. Put them up when you need them and fold them and pack away while underway. Get some screening for you windows that open when you in a warm area to keep insects from coming in and biting you. You may also use Velcro to hold them in place. Are you going to add solar panels on the roof to provide power or use a small generator to charge a bank of batteries. I suggest solar power lighting for when you are camping. There are some good ones out there but you need to shop around for the best ones. Bathroom may consist of a pack potty. They require a place to empty them and during hotter weather can build up pressure inside the holding tank portion. A shower enclosure consisting of a small tent structure and use a solar heated water supply. I am really looking forward to your finished product and ideas you are going to include in your project. Just make sure to have a custom ventilator to extract the excess moisture, because we humans produce 40 g of water vapour per hour sleeping, 70 g/h when seated and 90 g/h when standing or doing housework. In Europe most houses have ventilators, because the houses are good insulated, that's why the moisture needs to go outside. Also the doors and windows have a small opening for fresh air. This is important, so inside your home or room its constant flow of air circulation. The problem with ventilators in cars, sometimes the water will go inside and that's why you need to make it water proof.

This is awesome. I love your Land Rover. I have helped my parents build one and my friends as well. Its great fun to have your own design. You are correct, what seems like something easy and simple, will take 4 to 5 times longer and more work than you ever thought. But its worth it. Yours is coming along great. Thank you for sharing.

When you said you wished how to cut wood in school and don't want to rely on others all the time....I felt that. I feel like that a lot.

Magnets are a great way to hang curtains , even rough driving will not shake them , and easy to pull off when not needed .

when you get a mattress/sponge for your bed/sofa, you will be raised higher and the worktable is already hitting your knees, perhaps raise it a little? :)

Never think you can't do something. It's incredible what you can teach yourself. If you have a bit of time and don't mind destroying your first attempt, you can make anything.

Your uncle ... is the key to it! Huge congrats and respect to him. I have a 110 which I bought just because it's long enough to sleep in it, and I was thinking of converting it in a manner similar to yours. Actually I did not think of a workspace, but that's a good idea, as it could be the kitchen - when it rains outside. SO I will keep in mind your layout. Good luck!

I know this is a while back but I recently found the channel, so my thought here is, what you do not know is irrelevant, what really matters is what you are willing to learn. I look forward to discovering more.

Speaking as a Defender owner, spend some time with the car trying to fix as much as you can by yourself/learning how to troubleshoot from the one fixing it before going on trips where help might be hard to get. They are amazing cars that can be fixed with almost nothing but they will need to be repaired, hence the joke about Land Rover reliability. The overland forums for these cars are amazing, especially the posts about going to Africa that lists most parts one might need to bring are a great place to start. Good luck and most of all, have fun with your Defender.
