While Amy Lee’s sister did pass away when she was very young, this song was written by the guitarist (Ben Moody) about a family member passing away. Amy Lee wrote “Hello” about her sister, and shockingly enough, it’s even more heartbreaking than My Immortal. I highly recommend checking that one out as well. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful and it penetrates straight to your soul. She really is a one-of-a-kind talent

Same. Not for a partner, but for my father, and also from cancer. He toughed it out with over-the-counter pain meds until it was already at stage four (pancreatic that spread), by then of course it was was too late to recover from. And I never really gave myself room to fully process it because "I had to be strong" for my mother. So, it still bubbles up from time to time (especially with emotional songs like this). What's even sadder, for me, is that it happened in my college years, when I was still a young, dumb kid who was "too cool" to hang out with his parents. We were just starting to connect on an adult father-son level when he was snatched away in less than a year. I recently moved back to my hometown to be closer to my mother so that never happens again.

I once went to a training session for a job. One of the women there was married to a guy that had ended up in a car wreck, and suffered brain damage such that he was reduced to the IQ of a 5 year old. She was now responsible for a full grown toddler whom she loved but could not return the love as an adult. She opened up and expressed some of the feelings she had. The conflict of love, yet angry that she was robbed of what she once had and the responsibility thrust upon her, the loneliness of it all. This song took on new meaning for me since hearing her story.

There were so many nights that this song got me through some of the loneliest of nights. Heart wrenching nights where I just wanted to die physically cause emotionally I was already dead with the pain inside me. I was so numb.
