It is a poor generalization. There are however men who are tetrachromats and can see many more colors. Women are more likely to be tetrachromats, and men are more likely to be colorblind. Generally though men can see all the shades of makeup, they just don't care to name them all and just group them.

As a male, I definitely struggle to see the differences in red nail polish, but I'm always surprised at how my female colleagues can't perceive the different shades in e.g. beige, blue, brown or gray. They are better at labelling (i.e. naming the shade once they see it) but often worse at detecting some. There are cultural influences too. Generally speaking, Russians (male or female) distinguish shades of blue and indigo much better than Spaniards or Czechs.

As a former head of a Paint dept and an artist: While many more women than men are sensitive to and discern lots of color shades, some men, such as myself and other artists, male or female, are very attuned to color variation and perception. Sure, as a Paint dept head I'd get lots of guys who would just pick "Blue," where women would ponder, compare, get sample size bottles... of many shades and colors. They also observed and appreciated I saw what they saw, and could help them. I also liked paint matching and adjusting.

Well, in arts it is very necessary to identify colors properly, since you need to spot the hues and undertones in order to make a rich painting, but oftentimes you find artists that work with Grey hues, my dad was a good artist with just a pencil, Rembrandt's palette could work with a lot of people since it has low saturated colors.

And I've noticed that even though I'm more nearsighted than my wife I can see things better at a distance than she can. I also have better depth perception than she does. I don't know why I can see better in low light situations or darkness than she can. I'm also more sensitive to bright light.

Actually, in Peyronier disease, if you refer to surgical treatment, it.s not "the sooner it begins, the better". You actually delay the surgery untill the evolution of the disease stops bc otherwise it can easily reoccur.

Another little fact about color perception between males and females. Males are at a much higher chance to be color blind than females are. Also, tetrachromacy (vastly superior color vision) is a female-only trait. Ironically, both conditions are caused by the same gene on the X Chromosome. The fact that females have two X chromosomes is what gives them the chance to be a tetrachromat. The fact that males only have one X chromone is what makes them more likely to be color blind.

I think I've experienced that difference in colour perception more than a few times, but have a hard time imagining red looking like pink. Maybe some of the more intermediate shades. Puce or fuchsia- I doubt I could tell those.
@RoySATX
@RoySATX 5 ай бұрын
Puce and Fuchsia aren't even close, now Dusty Rose and Puce that can be tough. Both Puce and Dusty Rose are in the brown range with pink hues though Puce is ever so slightly more purple, Fuchsia is one even women, botanists, and Prada wearers argue about as there is no consensus which petals of the Fuchsia flower is Fuchsia in color, the more purple or the more pink ones. Who would name a color after a flower with two strikingly different hues? A man, obviously.

I think women see shades better because they're constantly made aware of them. Clothing, fashion and such. If you do that to the men I think the results would be similar. I don't think women were mainly foragers. I've read this thing that the colours you see is associated with language. The more you name different shades, the more you'll grow to see them.

Fascinating bit about men being able to see slightly further into the red. I wonder how the view into a short-range fiber optic link appears to women? The transmitters run at 850nm, and this is plainly visible to me looking into the fiber end, as an _extraordinarily_ saturated red. It is also very aberrated, and bringing the IR to focus dramatically blurs my view of the connector end. To preempt anyone who would panic - there is zero danger, the light exiting the fiber is not collimated and the transmit power is 1-2 milliwatts.
