Benji has great insights around safety. Best advice is that ride to return comes first over anything. If youre older than 20 and not getting paid, no amount of fitness is worth getting injured over.

the "Dutch reach" is tought in Belgian aswell, if you don't do it during your test you fail. It's just that very few people keep doing it.

Geez, those injuries to Remco are not great at all, we can empathise with him and his family, our son many years ago had all of these injuries, in fact he had all of these injuries and more, many broken bones, two punctured lungs, spleen and kidney and so on, hitting a parked vehicle at speed is definitely not nice, so we definitely understand the challenge of this. We wish Remco a complete and speedy recovery❤

BPost is not financed by the tax payers Benji like for example the NMBS trains. The Belgian state owns a large share of stock but BPost is a profitable company which actually returns some dividends to the state ;) Also, an effective media campaign about not throwing your doors into cyclists, ideally using the 'Dutch reach' which is technically mandatory in Belgium, is the best that could come from this crash.
@tomcads16045 күн бұрын
European Postal services had to be privatized by law quite a number of years ago
@MrMattie7255 күн бұрын
@tomcads1604 I don't know the exact rules etc, but I think they are technically private. The state just happens to own 51% of the stock via some constructions. Same thing with one of our banks. That said, there are obviously complaints from other postal services about unfair competition and corruption.
@tomcads16045 күн бұрын
@@MrMattie725 sure, all these legacy state carriers aren't magically turning into fully private entities overnight so they keep a lot of their former advantages, but as you said, technically they're private companies and that's all that matters for EU rules
@simonlockwood87205 күн бұрын
My understanding of the Belgium employment regulation (3rd hand) is that an employee (/next employer) can buy themselves out of their contract and the formula is set at the total outstanding salary. If that’s the case the UCI wouldn’t be able to enforce a different formula in Belgium.

I really hope Lefebvre remains active commenting in cycling media. For better or worse, he's been one of the more colorful characters in a cycling world that's getting more and more sanitized (same as other professional sports) and he'd be sorely missed

Corkscrew AND Willunga should be on your agenda. Let us have a heads up on the days & times, & you'll have a HUGE group to accompany you. And speaking of Remco, I was doored 12 months ago, with 10 broken bones & 4 months off the bike. He got off lightly. :)
@ShawnStradamus5205 күн бұрын
Great analysis! Crashes are to be expected and avoided. Crashes happen and they add up over time. To be at your very best you need to avoid major disruption to your training over a period of years and Remco has not been able to achieve that due to a pattern of serious crash injuries. Regrettably, like Bernal, Thomas, and Roglic, this pattern has already negatively impacted his career. He needs to recognize the pattern and correct it now if possible because he is risking his health by the way he rides. I wish him a speedy/full recovery and all the best!

Is the "Dutch reach" real? Where you open your car door by reaching over your body with your right hand so you have to turn and look over your left shoulder for bikes.
@Gabrielle4870Күн бұрын
Yes. You fail your driving test if you don't look for cyclists, also when turning.

Benji take pastry's with you from breakfast and heavy food with high fats for Teide. Don't take loads of gels you will chasing the highs. The local small island 🍌 s are great 🚀 fuel. The climb is in your head. Refill your water at chio petrol station for the way up so you save weight from starting if you are coming from the coast on south west side. I feel really bad for Remco. Stateside, we call it “getting doored.” It’s the third most common accident that happens to urban cyclists at least here in the US. I thought it’s much safer in Europe but I guess the “Dutch reach” is really only practiced in the Netherlands?
@AntiMatterDeathrayКүн бұрын
I hear people say that Europe is safer for cycling, but I’d be curious to see data on it. My cousin and his wife took a trip to Europe in the summer and did quite a bit of cycling. He said that while people are pretty courteous to cyclists, the roads are just so much narrower that he said it took several days to adjust to it and to feel comfortable riding on the roads in some areas. Lot of factors at play, he’s more of a mountain biker than a road cyclist, and where we live in Utah has really good cycle paths and most roads have bike lanes/big shoulders so maybe that’s why it was more uncomfortable for him.

Oddly enough, American postal and delivery vans have either no doors, or sliding doors, perhaps for this remco issue
@DR_1_15 күн бұрын
Sliding doors sound like a good solution... If you stop dozens of time a day, and need to twist your spine all day long in addition to carrying items all day long, it can't be good... Anyway delivery cars and vans usually don't have windows behind the driver, so there is not much point looking over your shoulder before opening the door? My guess is that the problem was more about cars crashing the opening doors, than the opened doors hitting cyclists, though!

QuikStep are the next Ineos. And I don't mean that in a good way. UCI going to have to break the power of the big money (ie UAE), setting caps.
@LovetheIPAs4 күн бұрын
One of the most illogical decisions by the UCI is this rule about the color of jerseys - illogical because it's completely unnecessary. There are already too many blue tones in the men's peloton and too many pink/purple in the women's. Now the UCI is further reducing the color options available for team kits.
