including 90s.

An evening of Freight and Mail trains at Carlisle's Citadel Station.
Whilst its still daylight past 8pm some good recordings can be made.
Although most freights are hauled by 66s, Freightliner still uses pairs of 90s on certain intermodals.
At the moment most freight activity occurs during the evening and night. The Hamms Hall to Mossend and Seaforth Container Terminal to Mossend plus the Coatbridge to Basford Hall all stop for crew changes at Carlisle station. In recent months Royal Mail trains are concentrated during the daytime and in an evening three can be seen, largely northbound through Carlisle.
The final freight is an MOD empty train heading south to Marchwood. The VGA van is still emblazoned with Highland Spring advertising. Although Runs as Required, the northbound workings are mostly during the night through Carlisle (often loaded) with southbound workings in the following evening. Old VGA vans are used as barrier wagons. We never know they are running until on the day!

Nice Video ! Running trains with electric locos does not make sense, if the price of operational costs per mile is higher then using diesel engines..The state of track inside this station would have consequences in Germany: it would be closed down ! Greetings from Germany! Class 88 is a reliable force for priority freights !

There are two ways of looking at this. Its been a game between the freight companies to accept spot prices for electricity. On the other hand electric hauled freight trains are faster than diesel hauled. Something the public tends not to be aware of and the timetables have, I suspect been altered to accomodate slow freight.

Wouldn't it be better if we used electric trains for freight if it was cheaper and reduces our carbon emissions down to zero?

Hey Leslie wouldn't it be better to replace the class 325 with another class like the class 90 with mk4B coaches?

Royal Mail own and dont want the 325s. However they have said they will use trains supplied by another operator. Even Varamis with their 321s may offer to run the mail trains

From all accounts just changing who's trains they use rather than owning their own. Part of the changes around the new ownership of Royal Mail.
