I battle health issues but with the help of my dear husband, we are able to keep our 2500 sq. ft rented garden space growing food from late March to early December here in Ky. June and July we pretty much hibernate and say a prayer for the few plants that can survive outside (looking at you, Sweet Potatoes!). Jess, I spent many years not thinking of how lucky I was to be able to be out in the sun all day, every day. I was a landscaper for my "day job", and gardened in the evenings, no problem. THEN, I developed an allergy to the sun, my dermatologist said it was a reaction to my anti-seizure meds, and it looked like lupus on my skin. I have scars all over my arms, back , and upper chest. But the past few years have been better for me for some reason--nothing has changed in the weather here in VT, except it's gotten hotter and sunnier, so it's definitely something adjusting in my body, at the age of 73, after almost 20 years of long sleeves and long pants! Your body may at some point decide the sun is more acceptable, and I most certainly pray for that for you! Until that hopefully happens, you are loving yourself by caring for yourself. I know over 600,000 viewers who are so glad you are, as we care about you too!

Our climate is incredibly mild: I can look out the Golden Gate from where I sit and we won't get even a threat of frost until mid-December and even then it may not frost at all. The desire to homestead but feeling like there is no way to do it on any kind of grand scale is defeating, because we deal with chronic illness. A-D is the chronic illness warrior and John is the caregiver on top of working a full-time WFH job. The dream of a homestead based on aquaponics with a few egg chickens and still carry our business making handcrafted pet products (cat and dog toys, beds, and cat trees) seems like an overwhelmingly large thing. Here you are having experienced and lived the experience of limitations of activity yet still are able to find a way to homestead. Thank you for being a living example of what we dream to do.

It's our best growing season because we don't get cold enough to kill lettuces, brassicas, ect. but it's when we start our gardens again after our brutal summers. We take the summer off and consider it our 'winter' season. So we now grow from September through May/June.

He didnt want it because the guys were making fun of him, so now I use it for mowing, milking, gardening in the heat. It is a HUGE game changer. It is like ice packs that you put in a vest to keep you cool. They are from glacier tek and I highly recommend them, if anyone is struggling with the heat.

I moved to South Africa from The Netherlands 17 months ago. We are going into spring now but we are still looking for a smallholding to start growing our own food. We also need to be off grid because in SA we have a thing called loadshedding which means power cuts and we have been at level 6 which means 10-12 hours without electricity. You also need to collect your own water because there are regular water restrictions. So we have a lot to think about with buying a farm. I love your garden tours. They are quite relaxing. Second year of building the structure of our garden. Almost entirely DIY, but with several physical limitations. I’m in North Texas, so we just got our first break from the 100+, dry weather. My garden was meager this year. I’d be putting it to bed, but I still have a few tenacious plants that survived the heat. Even though they didn’t produce, I don’t have the heart to tear them out. They fought so hard to live. I’m going to putter around doing winter prep around them, and see if they end up giving me something. After our first frost comes, I’ll amend, mulch, and put my raised beds to bed and concentrate on finishing structural improvements for Spring. If all goes well “and the creek don’t rise” we should be ready for Spring with bells on.🙏🏻

I only have a very small allotment and still have so many tomatoes coming! Cucumbers didn't do much at first and now, after the plants have been looking dead for weeks, they have so many fruits on! Mad... I also picked some aubergine and kohlrabi and cut off sunflower seedheads as it seems they have been feeding the allotments rat population 🙃 Weather this year is so unpredictable, that every week is to be a new surprise!🌱🌱

I’ve just harvested the winter squash, the sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, and I’ve started putting the garden to bed for the fall. I need to move some strawberries that have taken over into a new bed I’ve made for them now that it’s cooler. Still have some celery and beets coming into fruition in the garden beds. The celery are all volunteers from last years gone to seed! It’s pouring today, I think summers coming to a close. It would sure be lovely to have a warm greenhouse to carry me through, it’s on the list!

I finally have chickens of my own and they're currently tearing up my little tiny backyard! I'm going to reset everything soon and start some cold crops. Everything will be buttoned-up beautifully so that I can go to Front Royal here in a couple weeks and completely focus! After that first time HOA experience, who knows what I'm going to be inspired to do!😊❤

I live in the middle of Sweden 🇸🇪 and have sown my winter crops. First frost is about 2 weeks away if we are unlucky, but more likely 4-5 weeks. I hope to get at least some tiny turnips, and a bit of size on the kale before it freezes. 😊 Lettuce loves the cooler weather, so does the kale and spring onion 😁 I still harvest loads of zucchini and cucumber, the carrots that I sowed on frosen dirt and put snow over in February are amazing. All potatoes are up, cabbages eaten... I got some, but the slugs ate the most. 🙈

I'm in the thick of transplanting lettuce, kale and finishing up planting the fall/winter garden. It's my favorite time to garden. I do not tolerate the heat well anymore and get the blues in the summer. It's like a breath of fresh air waking up to temperatures dropping and heavy dew on the ground. It's also time to prepare for the winter hush.

I'm with you Jess! I think I shed a tear every single time I go out to pick for dinner and then again while eating the most fresh, delicious food. Blessings to all. Still chugging along with tomatoes and peppers, have the brassicas growing and a brand new greenhouse classroom for a winter of experimentation! Thanks Jess.

I didn't plant a second round of cukes, just tore the vines out last week, and was surprised to see you growing some this late. Loving the kale, chard, arugula, and still waiting for my kohlrabi, fennel and bunch onions. Wishing you all the best. Your videos are always inspiring!

This year I started off with getting the garden started but once we got the garden in, I got extremely sick and couldn't even get out of bed. My husband put in an irrigation system to keep the garden watered throughout the summer. I am still sick, but I have been able to harvest and can. This is our first year actually having a large garden and enough harvest to maybe last through most of the winter. We have to limit ourselves so that we don't get sick again. I am glad that you are doing better.

I was born & raised in South FL; living in East TN for 40-ish years. Even as a kid, I much preferred cool weather. You will not see me outside in the middle of the day in the summer or I will melt. Menopause has made me even less tolerant of hot weather. Ugh. I'm glad Fall is almost here.

I have never done any of this before so am very nervous but very excited and I can’t wait to sit outside in my fall garden during golden hour. And watching my chickens. Thank you for your advice, talks, and sharing both on garden and chickens and speaking Godly things over us. Have a blessed night.

My chaos flower planting is in its full, wild glory right now. I’m waiting on sunflower heads to mature, but the squirrels and finches are telling me they are already good enough to eat. I’m hoping my Brussel sprouts finally come to fruition as well as my watermelon radishes. I planted Tanya’s pink podded beans that I’m waiting to dry for seeds. Jerusalem artichokes are about 10 feet tall, I have no idea what I’m going to do with them all!

I am in deep south Mississippi here and my summer garden has pretty much been over since mid July due to the major heat wave this year. So I have been enjoying your garden until I could get my fall garden planted. It is now sown and planted and I am so eager to be back out in the garden on a regular basis. I have to say I am another that never really looked forward to fall until I started planting a fall garden 2 yrs or so ago. Now I look forward to this time of year and a little slower pace in the garden. I just want to say thank you for sharing your lovely space as it really keeps me from being quite so bummed when my summer garden fizzles out. ❤

Glad you asked Jess. I’m finally on my way to living my dream somewhat. While living on a farm is out of our reach we are fortunate enough to buy a large block in the city outskirts. We have just planted 5 standard, and 6 dwarf fruit trees. I have two large vegetable beds that my beautiful hubby had built me. Sprouting in their pots are tomatoes and plenty of pollinators, plus I am excited to be starting a medicinal herb garden inspired by Wills wife. It’s been a long wait and when I’ve felt frustrated I have reminded myself your motto of using your waiting room as a classroom. Your vlogs have got me though a very long waiting room visit. Thank you ❤

Minnesota. We are awaiting that first frost. Played a game of “off with their heads” this week trying to get tomatoes and squash to ripen the set fruit. My plants are so prolific right now that I’m sure to cry when the frost does come. My tomatoes are so wild and beautiful this year. So sad to see them go.

Hello sweet friend. You asked where I’m at in my garden. Fall has kissed a few of my tomato plants. I’ve harvested my first ever grown sugar pumpkins for pie in the holidays. With the recent lose of my son. My summer has come to a sad ending. I have not had the energy to process my harvest but I have blessed a lot of neighbors friend and family. With the cooler nights here in New England I ve begun to slowly move indoors. I have a handful of books and my skeins of yarn have been purchased and I’ve decided my winter crochet pattern will be a chevron pattern. But again with the tragic loss of my son to addiction. This Fall and winter season. I will be laying low connecting to a power greater then myself keeping warm filling my home with the wonderful smells of baked goods and planting seeds of faith direction clarity. 🙏Thank you for asking and thank you for being you. ❤️

I was so looking forward to hearing you speak and meet you! I have been watching you for a very long time. I have quite a big garden now. It's kinda like chicken math, once you start, it just keeps growing and growing. lol I do understand just enjoying staying home and hope you have an abundance from your fall garden! I'm in Silverdale, WA west of Seattle. Zone 8b. We're slowly putting the summer garden to bed. I've cut all the leaves off my tomato plants and crossing my fingers the fruit will blush soon. I've ripped out the sweet peppers, and hope the spicy peppers will ripen. Green beans are being eaten by the deer, and harvesting squash and pumpkins. My fall/winter garden will be all aliums.

It’s been a really sad season for me. I’ve been trying to have even just a little garden and in the hundred and teens heat of Palm Springs it just haven’t worked. I only managed to get 2 jalapeños and a small handful of the smallest cherry tomatoes. All of my plants have shriveled to dust, despite regular watering. And now I’m in a state of flux because I had to move and the place that I am isn’t a very good environment mentally so now I’m in the process of looking for somewhere else to live. So all the garden I have is watching these beautiful gardens on KZbin. Maybe next year will be better and healthier for my garden and myself. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden with us!

I still have some tomatoes on the vine, hope the blush this weekend, it will be unseasonably warm in the high 70s low 80s, I have some small pie pumpkins growing on an arched trellis, and some scarlet runner beans as well, I’ve never grown them before , and I love them ❤ Thank you for hanging out with us 😊

I’m used to working a 3400 sq ft in ground garden, but last year I sustained a spinal cord injury. I’m now in a wheelchair full time. The garden looks a lot different now, we’re still working on making adaptations slowly but surely. It definitely comes with a lot of frustrations. But im still working for the harvest.
