The smartest thing I ever did was convince my wife that I was the one for her but the 2nd most intelligent thing I have been part of was the purchase of our home. When I think about it I have done maybe 10 things in my entire life that could I consider truly smart and half of them have to do with our home. What you mention regarding the renovation of your home is so much more important than PlasticCard and an air brush... When you flush the toilet, "it" needs to go away forever. When the wind and rain pelt your home, it has to stay on the outside. Sun through your own windows is a joy to behold. Being warm in the winter and cool in the summer is NOT overrated. I am my wife's partner, we are partner's with our home, and after 14 years I have almost finished the attic over the garage for use as a hobby room. When it gets down to base levels - remember Murphy's Law on Everything (model railroading, auto repair, dental care, home improvement, whatever...) GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. Pick two. Turn your house into your home. The rest will follow.

Huge congratulations on the new house and very relieved to hear that your employment troubles haven’t derailed the home ownership dream. I understand that the KZbin algorithm tends to ignore channels who don’t post for a long period, so please keep us all updated with the prep work you do on the attic to prepare for building Everard Junction 2.0. Hopefully that will keep a bit of extra income coming in from the channel as well. Best wishes and lots of 💪🏻 for the renovation.

Been there, bought it, converted a similar loft, did major gutting/rebuilding/refitting and built large extensions. ALL works done myself from design and planning, digging foundations, ground works, blockwork/brickwork, underpinning, plastering, framing, roofing, electric and plumbing, fixtures and fittings and decorating, all done by me single-handedly whilst bringing up 3 young sons too! So, good luck Richard, as you can see from my experience, it's very doable. My loft advice, conform to the building regulations for a habitable room with good insulation, strong floor and at least two Velux windows, one being MOE. DON'T buy a combi boiler for heating/hot water, they constantly have reliability issues. ALWAYS have standard condensing boiler with a separate hot water tank (with emersion heater backup), bullet proof and cheaper. Have a gravity fed unpressurised central heating system with a small header tank, it's uncomplicated and just works! ATB, Julian

@kawazukisoddbits27178 ай бұрын
For ANY loft conversion works, get the advice and guidance from a structural engineer! Putting a loadbearing floor in will probably require steelwork to carry the additional joists or extensive timberwork. Be aware you are technically creating a 2nd floor and that brings with it considerable implications with Building Regulations for the rest of the house - interpretation of the conversion will need to be obtained as regards BRegs - any structural work will require approval!

I also wanted a big garage and my wife wanted space for her piano and a hobby room. Congratulations on the new house! I'm really looking forward to watching an even larger Everard Junction come to life. Can i make a suggestion, based on hours (and hours and hours) of work trying to convert a brick walled "basement" type space into a sealed, non dusty, presentable, layout room. When it comes time to do the brick ends of the room, point the brickwork before you paint. You will save HOURS of work and end up with a much nicer finished wall. Even including the time to point the brickwork, it took 1/2 to 1/3 the total time to go from raw brickwork to a completely sealed wall. Of course i was 3/4's of the way through doing the walls before i worked this out. 😂 I am a big believer in making the layout room look well finished and as professional as possible. A) it makes a space much nicer for you to work and be in. B) Visitors 1st impression of a layout is the room and its access. Positive or negative, the 1st impression will colour how people look at the layout.

Dear Richard, congrats on the new house! Very interesting how you showed the current state of the loft, even though the lighting was kind of illustrative for the attic’s condition. Even though you may be able to remove the chimney breast from the roof yourself, it may indeed be worth it to have it done by a professional. Just for the fact you said the house was built somewhere in the 50s, also get the chimney checked for a possible asbestos liner, before you start taking it down. From the shots you’ve shown to me it’s obvious that over the years the chimney has been repaired several times. Especially the moisture lines at several regular intervals may indicate a liner of some sort is present. This comment with the sole intention to just be prepared. Anyhow, enough of that, love the plans you’ve so far laid out. Definitely agree the house is in need of some TLC. Just take the time as you always do. With the dedication and commitment you’ve shown to put into your model railroad, I’m sure this house will receive the attention it deserves. Am curious for the construction work you announced especially on the attic space and most importantly the attic floor. Definitely am aware your channel is not a ‘building channel,’ nevertheless where in this case such work forms the foundation of your new layout, it will be as interesting as following your layout vids. Cheerio

Congratulations! You must be very pleased at having a house of your own with a delightfully huge attic. Your parents were very patient letting you take over their attic with your impressive creation! If you might ever possibly want to automate your layout (e.g. to have different trains running from the fiddle yards on rotation), do make sure to put in plenty of occupancy detection in at the early stages, as it's much harder to add later. Also, a few fragments of information that I came across about how a scrap yard in the 1980s that was situated next to a railway line was operated might interest you. Cars were fully dismantled, the doors were taken off and the electrics and engines were removed. The shells were taken off site for crushing and selling on. The car doors, engines and parts would be retained and had to be stored securely. The car doors were stored in a particular part of the site. Different parts of the site were separated using corrugated metal sheeting. The part of the site used to store car doors was not the part of the site generally accessible to customers. A small space was left in the corrugated iron fencing to allow the owner access to the area where car doors were stored. Very best wishes for your new house, job and layout!

Congratulations Richard, on buying a house, and good luck on the renovations. I inherited my parents house, so I'm in a different situation to you, but having your own home is a great feeling! Also, great to hear you've got yourself another job, and hope it gives you years of enjoyment, challenges, and even money! And, great thinking to NOT glue down the buildings, as that'll save you time and money, when building the new layout, which I look forward to seeing. As regards the accurascale Mk2, this may just be the way the camera has picked it up, but I think the windows look better on the Accurascale one, compared to the Bachmann one. I've two Accurascale coaches on order, to replace the Lima ones, on my trans pennine train, so I'll be keen to get those going! In the meantime, please, take care of yourself, enjoy your new house, and layout, and we shall see you soon!!

Great video, as ever. Just thought I'd say 'good luck', and genuinely wish you all the best with your railway, new house, new job and life in general. Interested in the loft development, please continue share.

Congratulations. Great to see you back. Looking forward to the journey. Try not to get overloaded with work because you will find you will have the chicken and egg issue. You may need to get your lighting below the ceiling sorted before putting a floor over it. Also I want to see how you will get your layout through a loft hatch. As you said don’t rush and plan, plan and plan. Enjoy. All the best.

Excellent news on the house Richard nice one! Sorry about the job, you were very proud of it and rightly so. Glad to know you're sorted with a similar one. I think any employer will be lucky to have someone with you're skills and talent. Looking forward to seeing progress on the new layout but all in good time! From one mechanic to another best wishes. Crabbers.

Roller coaster and a half! Great news on house, suboptimal on job particularly owed money but with your obvious skills and attention to detail, you will always be in demand and make sure you are not shy in commanding the remuneration you are worth. EJ has been such an inspiration to me although I am no where in that league. Hope that EJ continues to deliver some relaxation and enjoyment as you push forwards with new projects 😁

Hullo Richard, A grand hip, hip, hooray on your new home purchase. Well done ! I sorta knew that your previous layout was in the attic, but your super effective scenery and most capable backgrounds make it appear to be more substantial than you let on. Your filming techniques are top sort and give me great visions of an expansive main line. I positively love your station platforms. Awesome attention to detail and spot on lighting effects. Keep up the good work. Always barracking for you !

Big congratulations on achieving such a wonderful thing. It has been so interesting and enjoyable to follow your layout build so far and now you are about to start on a whole new phase of your life. I will always watch your channel and I send you all good wishes for your future. I am retired and old and it is always heart warming to see a young person succeed. 😊👍

Sorry to hear you lost your job at the same time as you just bought your house Richard, it must have been a very stressful time for you. Glad to hear you have found work. With EJ being 85 to 95% complete it must be a bittersweet moment. All those hours of graft with your wonderful detailing work not getting finished. As a KZbinr who does it for the fun and help of others, with no regular weekly or fortnightly uploads has always made them more special. You never know when and what to expect from the next one. I will wait patiently until you have something to share, and I’m sure you are bristling with new ideas to entertain us on your next journey, as with the end of EJ1 a video of how you learned lessons and what was missing to be added to the new build. Good luck with the upcoming house renovations.

Congratulations, wish you well with setting everything up and can't wait to see what you do with the attic! Thank you for all the videos, they have inspired me to dust off my childhood trainsets and start again with the hobby in my late twenties.

Dear Sir, Congratulations! I was 45 when i bought the apartment i now live in, me first and probably last, but i like it very much. I only have space for a 2.1x1.1m layout on a plywood board, but it if fun enough! Cheers from Brazil! Bloody hell! An obviously capable and brilliant man like you will be employed in no time. Good luck!

Nice update Richard. Congratulations on the house purchase! the dream has now become a reality. It will be sad to see the current layout go but as long as things can be saved from the current layout then that's all good. Glad to hear you have found a new job and I wish you all the best for the future. Looking forward to seeing the loft conversion. - Nicholas.

I just wanted to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you. (Our landlord is six or seven weeks into a two-week project to replace the felt, slates, and windows in our roof. Currently waiting for emergency chimney removal work to complete before they finish adding the slates and making the new windows waterproof)

I don't usually comment here but congrats on the house purchase Richard, as a uni student, I'm constantly being reminded of the absolute shambles the UK housing market is so anything half decent is a blessing! I'm also glad about your honesty about life stuff having an impact on your work on this channel as well, after all it's a hobby that should be done at your own pace. So there should be no rush and it should be fresh inspiration driving the boat as opposed to "I have to get it done for the sake of the next video" type of thing. I've had periods of burnout when it comes to the hobby and it's reassuring that even well known people in the hobby need to take time to get life stuff sorted out, and I hope that the house move and working for a new company goes smoothly as well. It's also good to remember that model railways is still an art, rather than just pure building and engineering! Jules

Congratulations on the house, Richard! My son just bought his first house... with a few projects he is hoping ol' dad will help him do! Sad to see the layout go again with all the brilliant work, but you do have the great attitude of new projects and improve with what you have learned. It is also great to hear that much can be transferred to the new build, when it's time comes. We just want to wish you best of luck and easy transition on those new re-modeling projects on the home... been there, done that... and still more projects on my house remodel. Again... congrats.

Congratulations on your house. Our thoughts and blessings are with you during your difficulties. I’m sure that things will work out ok, as they often do with a bit of fortitude, and a bit of patience. Remember, when things are tough, reach out to the community to have a bit of a vent, (it’s amazing how cathartic this can be!) and I’m pretty sure that many well wishes will come your way. God bless.

Wow it seemed just like yesterday when that first model railway got ripped up! Glad that you will have so many buildings etc that you can save. Congratulations on the house purchase, good luck with everything! Wow and that final bombshell! That could have ended the dream, but so glad that that you seem to have things in place. I hope that things settle down now and that you have a stable and dependable situation now. Kind regards - Peter
