No easy achievement but as a homeowner myself, one worth doing. After having three awful landlords in a row with damp, terrible heating etc I now have my own health and my own fate in my own hands. Not relying on a slumlord. It's no easy thing, but well worth it

Cheers, it's certainly been a challenge to reach this stage. I'm really enjoying the DIY jobs on the house, KZbin has been very helpful with that. Should have somewhere to do some modelling again in the next few months.

Hi Richard, I’ve just seen you on Tv, a program, Hornby A Model Empire. I live in Perth Western Australia. I recognised your voice. Not sure if it’s been on before. Renovating a house will definitely keep you busy, well done buying your first home. It’s a shame you can’t use a room on the ground floor in the house for your railroad. Creality have brought out new 3D printers, K1 and K1 Max. I bought the K1, 220mm 220mm 250mm build plate, the K1 Max is 300mm 300mm 300mm, these are great 3D printers, check them out before you decide which 3D printer your going to buy. Cheers.

Richard, this channel in my opinion is as much about you as your models. Your effort, knowledge and expertise is second to none and you and your layout will obviously go on to much bigger and better things. Congratulations on the new house, would love to see some renovation videos. Sorry to hear about the old job but delighted you found something so quickly. Really looking forward to your new videos. You are definitely number one in my book. Rob

What I love is that he's true to his vision. Too many people make exceptions to their models and eras that they are modeling. Richard works hard to maintain the proper style of what he wants to show without making exceptions. That's what makes it authentic to me.

Richard, I’ve always been impressed with your ability to tear-up things that are not perfect and make them right - whether that is the badly warped baseboards of Everard Junction 1.0 or the troublesome fiddle yard point work on Everard Junction 2.0. I’m sure the same can-do attitude you possess that makes this channel such a joy to watch will help you rebuild your career and your new home in the months to come. I’m so very excited for Everard Junction 3.0 and all the new space you have to create something new. I thank you for sharing all your hard work with us and I wish you the very best of luck as you dust yourself off to begin anew.

Huge congratulations on the new house and very relieved to hear that your employment troubles haven’t derailed the home ownership dream. I understand that the KZbin algorithm tends to ignore channels who don’t post for a long period, so please keep us all updated with the prep work you do on the attic to prepare for building Everard Junction 2.0. Hopefully that will keep a bit of extra income coming in from the channel as well. Best wishes and lots of 💪🏻 for the renovation.

@@simonroberts5No offense meant Simon. He did have a lot of trouble with the original - his videos of the lower level baseboards were horrific. The smartest thing I ever did was convince my wife that I was the one for her but the 2nd most intelligent thing I have been part of was the purchase of our home. When I think about it I have done maybe 10 things in my entire life that could I consider truly smart and half of them have to do with our home. What you mention regarding the renovation of your home is so much more important than PlasticCard and an air brush... When you flush the toilet, "it" needs to go away forever. When the wind and rain pelt your home, it has to stay on the outside. Sun through your own windows is a joy to behold. Being warm in the winter and cool in the summer is NOT overrated. I am my wife's partner, we are partner's with our home, and after 14 years I have almost finished the attic over the garage for use as a hobby room. When it gets down to base levels - remember Murphy's Law on Everything (model railroading, auto repair, dental care, home improvement, whatever...) GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. Pick two. Turn your house into your home. The rest will follow.

Best of luck with the house renovation, have gone through that (and still doing some) in the last 5 years. Moved in and realised we had roof rats, killed them, sealed the roof/fascias, insulated bits that had been missed, replaced guttering, had a small roof leak, fixed that. That was on a house built in 2009 in the US. Merry Christmas and hope you have a prosperous and enjoyable New Year. I would also say if you need any help to leverage your channel. You’ve put an incredible amount of work into your videos, you should get some benefits from that work.

Been there, bought it, converted a similar loft, did major gutting/rebuilding/refitting and built large extensions. ALL works done myself from design and planning, digging foundations, ground works, blockwork/brickwork, underpinning, plastering, framing, roofing, electric and plumbing, fixtures and fittings and decorating, all done by me single-handedly whilst bringing up 3 young sons too! So, good luck Richard, as you can see from my experience, it's very doable. My loft advice, conform to the building regulations for a habitable room with good insulation, strong floor and at least two Velux windows, one being MOE. DON'T buy a combi boiler for heating/hot water, they constantly have reliability issues. ALWAYS have standard condensing boiler with a separate hot water tank (with emersion heater backup), bullet proof and cheaper. Have a gravity fed unpressurised central heating system with a small header tank, it's uncomplicated and just works! ATB, Julian

It’s amazing how many of us have probably bought a house to suit our hobbies…I know I did. It had to have a cellar or loft for an indoor layout and a garden for a garden railway. I also wanted a big garage and my wife wanted space for her piano and a hobby room. I made a suggestion about velux windows, I’d add to that and recommend making provision for anything else that may go on the roof such as PV panels or vacuum panels for hot water if at all possible and avoid any disruption to the layout

Congratulations on the new house! I'm really looking forward to watching an even larger Everard Junction come to life. Can i make a suggestion, based on hours (and hours and hours) of work trying to convert a brick walled "basement" type space into a sealed, non dusty, presentable, layout room. When it comes time to do the brick ends of the room, point the brickwork before you paint. You will save HOURS of work and end up with a much nicer finished wall. Even including the time to point the brickwork, it took 1/2 to 1/3 the total time to go from raw brickwork to a completely sealed wall. Of course i was 3/4's of the way through doing the walls before i worked this out. 😂 I am a big believer in making the layout room look well finished and as professional as possible. A) it makes a space much nicer for you to work and be in. B) Visitors 1st impression of a layout is the room and its access. Positive or negative, the 1st impression will colour how people look at the layout.

Congratulations on your first home, I’ve been following you since you built the Diesel refuelling depot on the old layout and have not missed an update nothing like buying your first home. I remember moving in and having nothing but a sleeping bag perched on top of some old settee cushions. It’s always great to have projects to look forward to, to complete my home we only need a re-roof (Hornby heaven begins) and the corridor’s to be painted. Taking your time is for sure the best way, nothing worse than doing something and coming back to it.

Congratulations on your new home Richard. I’m really looking forward to seeing what you decide to do on the new layout. I started watching your how to videos when I got into the hobby about ten years ago and you have been an inspiration to me and my club mates. Like you I had a change in life a two years ago and bought a 50s house with a similar attic to yours. New floor beams, flooring and insulation in with some plasterboard means it’s nearly baseboard time so doubly interested to see how you progress. So sorry to hear about your job and the financial loss but well done on finding a new job doing what you enjoy. Can I just back what others have said about a Velux type window for light and air. Good luck.

Hullo Richard, A grand hip, hip, hooray on your new home purchase. Well done ! I sorta knew that your previous layout was in the attic, but your super effective scenery and most capable backgrounds make it appear to be more substantial than you let on. Your filming techniques are top sort and give me great visions of an expansive main line. I positively love your station platforms. Awesome attention to detail and spot on lighting effects. Keep up the good work. Always barracking for you !

Congratulations. Great to see you back. Looking forward to the journey. Try not to get overloaded with work because you will find you will have the chicken and egg issue. You may need to get your lighting below the ceiling sorted before putting a floor over it. Also I want to see how you will get your layout through a loft hatch. As you said don’t rush and plan, plan and plan. Enjoy. All the best.

Congratulations Richard on your house purchase, it would be very useful to show starting a new layout from scratch with first creating the space. I'm quite lucky being in a new build that actually allowed me to walk fall height across 3/4 the width of the house. I constructed my boards on the supports for the roof. I look forward to your next video.

Congratulations Richard, on buying a house, and good luck on the renovations. I inherited my parents house, so I'm in a different situation to you, but having your own home is a great feeling! Also, great to hear you've got yourself another job, and hope it gives you years of enjoyment, challenges, and even money! And, great thinking to NOT glue down the buildings, as that'll save you time and money, when building the new layout, which I look forward to seeing. As regards the accurascale Mk2, this may just be the way the camera has picked it up, but I think the windows look better on the Accurascale one, compared to the Bachmann one. I've two Accurascale coaches on order, to replace the Lima ones, on my trans pennine train, so I'll be keen to get those going! In the meantime, please, take care of yourself, enjoy your new house, and layout, and we shall see you soon!!

Dear Richard, congrats on the new house! Very interesting how you showed the current state of the loft, even though the lighting was kind of illustrative for the attic’s condition. Even though you may be able to remove the chimney breast from the roof yourself, it may indeed be worth it to have it done by a professional. Just for the fact you said the house was built somewhere in the 50s, also get the chimney checked for a possible asbestos liner, before you start taking it down. From the shots you’ve shown to me it’s obvious that over the years the chimney has been repaired several times. Especially the moisture lines at several regular intervals may indicate a liner of some sort is present. This comment with the sole intention to just be prepared. Anyhow, enough of that, love the plans you’ve so far laid out. Definitely agree the house is in need of some TLC. Just take the time as you always do. With the dedication and commitment you’ve shown to put into your model railroad, I’m sure this house will receive the attention it deserves. Am curious for the construction work you announced especially on the attic space and most importantly the attic floor. Definitely am aware your channel is not a ‘building channel,’ nevertheless where in this case such work forms the foundation of your new layout, it will be as interesting as following your layout vids. Cheerio

Congratulations Richard on the new house and the new job! - Although, sorry to hear that you got stung on the O/T. I have to say, from a purely selfish point of view, that I was starting to worry about where the layout would go next as it is practically done. I remember the excitement that I felt when you decided to pull up the old layout and start again some years ago. It has been a pleasure to watch you further hone your talents on this version, and I am excited to see EJ version 3 appear in the new house. Given your meticulous attention to planning, building, and finishing, I'm equally excited at the prospect of loft and workshop fitout videos as well. More power to your elbow, sir!

Well done on your recent property purchase. Have been following your layout construction for many years now, since your first layout. Your articulation and knowledge and voice are a pleasure to listen to. I will be a pensioner next month and have always wanted to build a good large layout but have no experience but have just recently attended the Preston club. The reason that I am commenting and for the first time is that my skills and experience may compliment your needs, which is that of a property developer both in renovation and new builds. My suggestion, which may feel extreme but is not and that is to lower the ceiling height in your bedrooms. You can achieve this by removing the existing ceilings and replace the joists with 8x2. By doing this it would give you the structural integrity and addition head room. Bedroom ceilings are perfect at only 2.3m, so you can calculate the increased headroom benefit., it would be worth the temporary disruption, both from your train room and capital increase of the property. We have also removed chimney stacks and repaired the roofs as required. This could then lead to a dormer at the rear of your property. My son and I are prepared to offer you free of charge two weeks to complete the ceiling reduction. The only thing I request is the benefit of your assistance with my own layout construction and You Tube guidance and perhaps a viewing of your layout. Please get in touch if you are interested or even if you are not. Not sure how communication commences. Regards David

An interesting thought David and thank you very much for offering to help me out. My ceiling joists are only attached to the rafters and rest on some of the internal supporting walls around the staircase. The roof of the house extends into the bedrooms so basically there is no wall plate for the ceiling joists to rest on at the sides of the property. I'm not sure what implications this may have on strengthening the ceiling. I was of the mindset that it would require steelwork or flitch beams. I've not investigated much into yet. Cheers

@@EverardJunction I have lowered many a ceilings messy but always worth it and as yet not found an issue that cannot be solved and the mess is very short term. The fact that you have a pulin construction opens up many opportunities as the roof weight is already stable and would not want to spread. In my past life before property investment I was a fully qualified quantity Surveyor so do understand the construction and the consequences of alteration. Would enjoy and look forward to a met and discus what you can acheive. Remember you will be adding capital value, also you will be obliged to put in place the appropiate insulation to satisfy the new regs but again this is only good because of the reduced running costs. The insulation would be 50mm between your rafters and 100mm below your rafters which of course reduces you head room. You mention wall plate but your ceiling does not have to span to your external walls, also have done this and do have photographs of the result. Basically you remove 4 course s of brick work which could be 5 or even 6, on your load bearing walls or what is appropiate. I use four becase the beams are normaly 2 courses in height. The purlin width determines the minimum benefit. Thank you for replying and would certainly enjoy helping you, as I wondered what you were going to do following the completion of Everard Junction 2 and would miss following you, so sellfish reasons why I want to assist in your future journey on "Eveard Junction 3", possibly. I would recommend you do a quick survey and a scaled drawing, to determine how much you would benefit. What I am suggesting is no more difficult and in some ways easier than trying to ensure the existing construction is adequate and with the benefit of increased headroom and capital value. Look forward to visiting or speaking direct. Do you have access to my email? David
