I found Ryan on KZbin by accident one day just browsing I had just finished watching the documentary you had made about Mount Everest in 1999 and I was on a Mount Everest kick so I was on KZbin. Watching anything I could find on Mount Everest and that’s how I found Ryan and I was hooked instantly I went back to the very beginning of his videos of when he started his Everest quest and then I watched it right to the end of his Mount Everest climb like I told him I don’t even know him, but I was really proud of him. I liked his videos. I’m gonna keep following him. I hope he does more climbs.🇨🇦

I caught Ryan's posts by accident/algorithm and was hooked on his honest, clear descriptions of the process and day-by-day activities. They represented for me the very best explanation of what things really look like from within a commercial climbing operation on Everest. TBH, I have concerns about the damage these operations can cause (to his great credit, Ryan doesn't shy away from this) but if a more critical licensing procedure was in place he is exactly the sort of person who should be granted one.

I usually have some side-eye for modern glory/tourism climbers so I was reluctant to watch Ryan's journey, I figured he'd be another thrill-seeker like influencers, since I didn't know him or his content. But his footage was fantastic & he seemed like someone who was genuinely doing the journey for reasons he was at ease with, he trained properly, trusted his team/guides on the mountain, & really seemed genuinely engaged like some of the K climbers I look up to, from history to current day. I learned things from his series, & I've been watching the K circuit, esp in the Himalayas, since the 90s. Glad this interview's happened.

Understood but why is it always Mount Everest? This mock-humble self-glorification by climbing Mount Everest has been going on since around the time Mitchell was born. There are a huge number of challenging peaks in North America, wouldn't it be more appropriate for American influencers to blaze a trail in their own homelands rather than forming a queue (sometimes literally) with the other 600 people trooping up the side of Everest each year? It would be wonderful if the world's highest (and hardest) peaks could be reserved for the world's best climbers .

His contagious attitude would make it difficult to not push to the top. Even when he was struggling his attitude was that of an older soul. His skills improved rapidly, and he showed that even though he was a relatively inexperienced he took the mountain very seriously. Luckily the weather held up and a cornice didn’t break loose while being unclipped. The best account of climbing Everest I have seen to date. I really felt like I was shown each section and what it was like to climb it. Is this part hard? Is this part easier? Do I have what it takes to continue? He was open about sharing his struggles and his breakthroughs.

I really don't think the situations are similar. Ryan clearly knew he needed to work for this, he summited Denali and Aconcagua before Everest. There was a point in his vlogs that he walked from Base Camp back to Namche bazaar while his team took a helicopter back down. He clearly has a drive to do this and push himself, and he's not on the mountain trying to get carried to the top.
