I find it wonderful & delightfully ironic that a couple of men as sincerely humble as Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay, would go on to become the first to reach the top of world. (Well, the first to summit & make the round trip w/ pics to prove it, but that’s another story!)

And in the words of Hillary, coming back was the achievement. Or rather sounded better when there was doubt he was the first

Mr. Ed is one of the 2 heroes I had when I was young! My first hero, Mr. George Mallory and then Mr. Ed Hilary!!! I should insert Andrew Comyn Irvine. I always had a great respect 🙏 for Irvine as he was the underdog. I always felt he didn't get much recognition, he was only 20 and not really a true mountaineer, he proved himself not just some normal pretty boy. I have respect for these pioneers that paved the way for my generation of hikers/climbers!!!!! Fantastic video

It's not important who climbed Everest first, if he hadn't someone else would have within months, not the big deal it's made to be. But what is big, much bigger is that he built schools for the Nepalese and that is much taller than Everest and he has my deep sincere respect for that, and i am not an Anglo-saxon nor Nepalese.

@@adambane1719 Right, that is the good side of human nature, but the vain side is : "I pissed further than you" or "i was the first to kill an elephant" or "I got to top of that rock first". You get the drift. Besides just as i said, it's meaningless because literally within month someone else would have climbed the Everest after Hilary. All those who did it in the same age (same equipment) are equally great. No, his grandeur is what he did for Nepalese chidren, not trying to be better than others but compassionate.

@@ericastier1646 It's the Human Spirit to do so.... after that, everything is just ego, so yes ! But we all have our 'mountains' to climb, depression, difficulties, challenges.... Depends how much Spirit you take with you to the 'top' of whatever your challenge is.

Previous expeditions did factor into the successful Everest summit bid. Yes there was information sharing back then, especially the Swiss expedition. To knock that 'bastard' off the Brits needed, wanted as much information, first hand experience as possible, including local knowledge

Fun fact: Edmund went to the North Pole with another famous person named Neil Armstrong, who became the first human to step foot on the Moon.

I genuinely don't think they ever summited. When he talks about how he got around "hillary's step" he said he crawled through a 2 foot wide ice crack around and up the right side of it. So he never even really climbed hillary's step first off. Second off there's zero proof. Tenzing couldn't even read or write and could barely speak english. When Tenzing is giving his interview with the model showing where they climbed, he doesn't even point to the right sides of the mountain lmao, as he's explaining it he says he's on one side of the mountain, then it jump cuts and he's pointing at the complete opposite side of the summit. Ontop of that the only picture they have is of tenzing who you can't even tell if he's on the summit or not, and the only place that makes sense is look towards south-south-east. Which means edmund would have had to walk all the way around the top of the summit to the other side and down a bit to take a picture. Makes no fucking sense to me.

Roald Amundsen won the race to the South Pole, 47 years prior to Hillary. With all due respect to Sir Edmund, a minimum of accuracy, please.
