For those who'd like to skip the preamble and get right to the lecture on the diffusion of innovations, it starts at 6:57.

I don't know if he spoke anywhere else after this. He was obviously ill but he was friendly and cooperative and absolutely one of the nicest and smartest men I ever met.

Thank you, Ken, for posting this rare presentation by Dr. E.M. Rogers. You did a great job by capturing this video footage at UIUC, where I am now a doctoral student. The real value of his work is now felt by looking back at his immense and tireless contribution to the knowledge in the Diffusion of Innovations theory, and especially when we realize the fact that Prof. Rogers is no more with us.

What a jewel of a video! At TU Delft I give a one-day workshop on diffusion of innovation twice a year. Together with my students we go through his model and apply it to product design. Always great fun, always informative. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ken for the posting; a real treasure! I know that Dr. Rogers' final statement is there will be no 6th edition of "Diffusion of Innovations"...but do we know if the publisher will continue to publish and if not, will anyone be able to do an update? I use this textbook in my class on change management.

Can this apply to peer to peer propagation of an idea? People on the lookout for new ideas in their area of interest will be the first to hear about it and spread it to their friends which has a cascade effect, but that has to interface with the D.o.I. theory as well. You wont tell your friends about something you dont care about.

I believe you are right, Cory. I’ve just heard of Prof. Rogers through one of Geoffrey A. Moore’s KZbin presentations (author of Crossing the Chasm), and then found this late presentation of Professor Rogers (btw, tk you for posting, Ken!). I think that what researchers teach today (Seth Godin and Simon Sinek, for example) comes from what Prof. Rogers originally proposed and addressed in his life. Clayton M. Christensen (author of The Innovator’s Dilemma) is another Professor whose legacy is related, I believe, to Prof. Rogers’ work.

The laggards remains laggards because being last to adopt a new technology means their time between adoption and obsolescence of the technology is the shortest. Hence, they feel the sting most acutely when the next innovation arises and undermines the innovation they've recently adopted. This group learns quickly to be hesitant to adopt innovation.
