EverQuest II is a 3D fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) originally developed and published by Sony Online Entertainment for Microsoft Windows PCs and released in November 2004. It is the sequel to the original EverQuest, released five years earlier, and features updated graphics and more streamlined gameplay compared to the previous entry, as well as an abundance of voice acting with contributions from actors such as Christopher Lee and Heather Graham. In February 2015, Sony Online Entertainment's parent corporation Sony Computer Entertainment sold it to investment company Inception Acquisitions, where it continues to develop and publish the game under its new name, Daybreak Game Company.

Was doing a challenge run last month. Decorator run, Only able to equip a gear per placed furniture item. EQ2 is probably the best mmo for challenge runs due to the extraneous flaws of the game, like agnostic dungeons, mercenaries, and being able to equip any level food.

Been playing this game on and off for the last two decades. That said, yes, it's totally worth it. Oldie but goldie! They sure don't make mmos like EQ1 and 2 anymore. It might be old, but far from obsolete. It's a magical experience from start to 'finish'. Whatever you do, find a nice guild and take your sweet time to the top. Don't rush it and try to engage with the veteran community in a friendly, respectful and patient manner. Yes, starter and lowie zones are a bit empty nowadays, but that's only normal after all this time. Most ppl are doing the high-end content or in their houses and guild halls at this point, but don't let that scare you off: Every single time I have asked for help via the in game chat, ppl have responded within mere seconds. EQ2 was way ahead of its time when it first launched and lots of that magic is still there to be enjoyed and consumed, now cheaper than ever (free), if you know where to look. Yes mistakes were made along these two decades, but nothing is perfect. EQ2 has the potential to shine bright and mighty again, but it needs the support from us players to justify the initial effort. Cheers

It is a good game but for someone to start fresh in 2022 they will find that its basically dead until endgame levels so you will be sick of soloing by level 20 and I think max level is like 120 so good luck . I played from day one up until about 2009 or 2010 , the first 5 expansions were decent but then the quality started to lack and the pop disappeared . I recently tried to get back into it but didn't have the patience to get to endgame or learn all the new stuff with my old characters . I ended up starting in the newer Varsoon server about 3 weeks ago which is a content level locked server that is currently on the 2nd expansion . The problem is that I missed the starting gun and like I mentioned it's nearly impossible to get consistent low level groups together to level up due to a low playerbase . Im level 28 and have given up as I'm sick and tired of the solo grind , Oh well it was a fun game in its prime .

@@manchesterexplorer8519 Hey there, thanks for sharing. The issue you describe with the game being dead in low lvl and starter zones can be fixed by joining a good guild when coming back and starting from scratch. It's only normal for most ppl to be doing high-lvl content at this rate, but it also doesn't mean that you can't have fun in low lvl zones together. I highly recommend starting from scratch if you have been away for so long, makes relearning and reexperiencing everything much easier. I did the exact same thing when I came back a couple of years ago, no regrets whatsoever. My advice in this case would be to form social bondings and connections with the ppl and vet commnuity that are already there, don't rely on general chat or random groups to get you anywhere through the vast amount of low and mid level content. Patience is key with this old gal of a game, and tbh, I prefer it this way, because it makes ppl interact and exchange a few words with eachother before going into high adventure mode. Well saying vast is almost an understatement after nearly two decades of game updates that is, but I'm certain you know what I mean. Mmorpgs used to be all about social bonding and interaction, this is basically what the genre is all about. New games nowadays do way too much handholding and have standardized modern features like dungeon browsers, which have killed off much of the more classy part of social interaction and have created a fast food approach to the genre instead of making it the most delicious five star restaurant meal available. That said, the same goes for all of the new skills, game mechanics, and even the interface for that matter - patience my young padawan. You do have a point though, I would like to see tutos and overall in-game information upgraded or improved on in order make it a bit easier for newcomers and returning players alike, but I wouldn't want to see the features we are talking about get streamlined too much, bc in its optional complexity lies its fun, if you appreciate that sort of thing ofc. A simple and maybe even automatic default is good, but you always have to be able to push that "advanced" button for ppl like my wife and I where we can further tweak and even learn new things. There sure is a lot to digest when coming back initially, but that also means you won't get bored that easily. Anyway, again about grouping, I started filming Hold of Rime and State of Unrest the other day, but these dungeons and zones require multiple ppl to solve their riddles and zone mechanics, so I asked around to see if anyone had time to help out. See and behold, a few seconds later I had enough ppl in my group to do the content (Halls of Fate). Super nice folks too, some of them even started giving me a history lesson in how some of the events that occured in these places tie into the original lore from EQ1 etc. Had a blast doing the content with these fine folks, highly appreciated. When it comes to the expacs, everyone is going to feel different about this topic and everyone is going to have a different top list of their fav expansions that have released over the years. I don't blame you if you feel the quality started dropping at some point, but let me tell you that it has also risen to new heights even though the dev team has gotten smaller over the years, a commendable feat indeed. The Everquest Show released a new video a few days ago, listing their top five expacs while at it, with Echoes of Faydwer coming in as the winner (1st place). Some will agree, some will disagree for -insert reason here-. When thinking about it extensively, I have come to the conclusion that while some expacs will differ in terms of what they were able to deliver at the time, most of them are really good nonetheless even though some introduced questionable and WoW-inspired changes, which I personally dislike (optional agnostic dungeons, dungeon brwoser etc.), but then again, some of these new features are optional and not mandatory after all. None of these are game breaking to me, so I continue my journey. The new zones and fresh content introduced with recent expacs is pretty good from a quality pov tbh, especially when considering that we're esentially dealing with an indie dev company by now, and a game that has been live for nearly two decades. VoV and Ro have introduced some of the most beautiful zones ever, and they're huge and filled with life of all sorts too. Karuupa Jungle in VoV feels like you have entered Jurassic Park, another callback to a childhood era of fond memories in my case. The game is still lots of fun, but you really have to take your time with this one. In fact, any mmo that has riped like a fine wine will primarily require time, patience and the will to (re)learn basic gameplay features as a fundamental investment. In addition, socialising with the existing vet community is highly advised at this point. This is a community that additionally turns its focus to the sandboxed elements of this world, player created housing, dungeons, adventure parks and more, which means that running dungeons all the time isn't a top priority for everyone and requires a bit of spit and handshaking nowadays. IMHO we gotta respect both new and returning players, but also the existing community that has kept the game alive for so long. Both of these elements go hand in hand, and if you're willing to invest the time and patience into it, I'm sure you will find fun similar to the old and golden days. I have, and I came back to the game after many years of absence just like you. I hope you find a way to reconnect to this beautiful virtual world, bc they sure don't make 'em like this anymore. EQ2 is a dying breed of high adventure mmo with lots of interesting features that not even triple A games nowadays are capable of incorporating into their game engines. Example: Even basic things like swimming and diving underwater has become a wishful feature in many new-gen mmos with more powerful and modern engines, because too much effort, too complex and more often than not viewed as unnecessary. What a shame, what a shame indeed. Last but not least, not a single mmo world out there is perfect, they all have their pros and cons, and we all know EQ2 has lots of room for improvement and lots of potential for future and more advanced upgrades. There have been ups and downs for sure, there is no denying that, but at the same time, the milestones it has accomplished so far are at the very least highly respectable. Wishing you the best of success mate, new and returning players are welcome. Give it a bit more time before calling it and waving the white flag. We need new and returning players to join the already existing community in order to grow and make more powerful jumps in the future.

@@manchesterexplorer8519 Old yes, but far from obsolete or dead. Oldie but goldie is what I like to say. It has matured like a tasty and ripe wine and it has lots of things new-gen mmos can learn from. Quality over quantity with this one mate. EQ2 doesn't need millions of new players, a healthy amount of well mannered adult ppl joining the fun is just fine too tbh. Most of the folks I see in EQ1 and 2 are adult ppl 30yo+ with families and kids of their own, and I like that. That's the type of ppl that I want to interact with anyway, so it's all good from my pov. Gym is fine too ofc, go for it! Having a nice balance between a hobby (or work) where you sit most of the time and giving your body that special treatment is important after all. The graphics were an amazing improvement over the original EQ. The gameplay mechanics were hard to get in to compared to its predecessor which is what kept me from enjoying my time in there. I have been in EQ 1 since late 1999 and still enjoy the content though I don't play everyday like I did back then. I was lucky enough to grab a lifetime membership the one time it was offered and it has paid for itself many times over. I think you should have tried the original Everquest before you tried EQ2 because you would have had a better frame of reference going in. So many MMO's built on the mechanics of the original EQ and that is why you see a lot of similarities between the games that came afterwards. The EQ franchise was a beast in its time.

I can relate to that completely! To make matters worse, many of the complexities that were added with later expansions were later cancelled in following expansions. I much prefer the vanilla EQ2 experience of the first 80 or so levels, to what began to get introduced in later levels. However, I think Daybreak Games realized that their key audience was LONG time players who had been playing the game for well over a decade, and tried to add something that would keep them interested.

I actually missed the WoW boat at lunch and landed in this. While I play WoW these days I am so thankful for having played this first as I adored it. The lore is rich, the combat is good, the ability to solo these days is well and truly there and you can expect to be immersed for months, if not years by doing all the quests should you so choose. There are a couple things said which while I agree with, had I not had first hand experience to reconcile and know they weren't real issues, then I'd have been deterred from giving this a go. 1) The cash shop - Certainly not pay to win, some cool cosmetics but certainly nothing to compel the impulse buyer of the pretties. 2) crafting - this is actually a joy to play, and the questlines around crafting and recipes are honestly more detailed than FFXIV and where that game would have gotten it's influence from. Specifically, these days you'd be using the crafting to create house items, of which there are huge amounts of recipes that you can easily preview. 3) population - There are those that still play, but I would pitch this now more to those that are soloers. You have the tools with agnostic dungeons, and solo challenges, as well as mercenary NPC's to not miss out on any of the content. 4) UI - Actually, mentioned on another video I saw but adressing here. It's fully customisable including resizing of hotbars. It's a non-issue and had been updated in years past though you can always download eq2 ui or other such add ons for total replacements.

Totally agree, I made a comment before about the population, but he deleted my comment. As of 2020, EverQuest had 66,000 subscribers and 82,000 monthly active players. EQ2 was about 40k subscribers. We know from Holly (old Director of the Entire EQ franchise) that the numbers have gone up since then. This is published information from the DayBreak Games investors meeting 2 years ago. Saying there are 10 people on a server is ridiculous. Most the population is at end game so he didn't see them. Also, Varsoon is loaded with people.

Came back after years and yes the cash shop is crazy expensive, plus if you buy a mount it character specific and not account wide (which sucks). Gameplay is pretty solid though. I have been wanting to play a traditional high fantasy RPG lately and nothing I could find fit the bill. This definitely scratches the itch. Truth be told though, its hella expensive to play because if you dont pay for a merc then you are going to have a bad time. So if you dont mind spending a somewhat stupid amount of money for an old school mmo then this is the one for you. Graphics are not terrible and I find it quite immersive. Crafting is a heck of a grind and gets uber repetitive quick.

I played EQ2 during the Desert of Flames and Kingdom of Sky expansions, I believe the first expansions. The game was definitely a lot more hardcore than other games of its genre. For example, overworld content in Rift and WoW is often tuned for single players, but EQ2 would just throw heroic difficulty monsters into the main world, requiring some kind of problem solving just to access some areas of the map. There was also experience debt and soul-walking, which added extra penalties to death, and a very slow out of combat regeneration rate requiring careful management of resources in combat to minimize the amount of time spent sitting and eating. Later expansions added the Alternate Advancement system and expanded on it, and I felt the amount of power in that feature ruined group content. In the later days of my play, I had a Shadownight I kept around level 39, and put all my experience into AA, and was easily able to solo every group dungeon appropriate to my level. I don't think they ever quite managed to get the balance right. Would love to see some other studio license the IP and use a modern game engine to bring this game world into the current generation. I had a lot of fun spending time in the world. There are some pretty epic quests that felt uniquely rewarding in my MMO experience, and the playstyle variety was very cool. Some of the scenes you showed in your review hit my nostalgia buttons hard.

EQ2 never had the slow "sitting and medding" issues that the original Everquest did, not even close. The "soul-walking" as you call it, was only active in the first few months of the game after launch, (to go and gather your Soul Shard *shudder*) and was completely dropped in a massive update that got rid of all that. It was just one of many such issues that plagued the launch of EQ2.

I think i downloaded it a while back and they had way way way too many servers for the number of players and I wanna say I either had characters taken away from me or moved to different servers or both. I'm ok playing a game with a lower population if it's still good, but when they keep the population spread out and want to charge you to consolidate the population across too many empty servers then I just can't get behind that. Very good review! You covered a lot of ground, and I felt that you gave the game a fair chance. Most of your observations were pretty accurate, as well, particularly with regards to the low server populations. But what really can you expect from a 20 year old MMO that was never at the top of the popularity charts to begin with. Some of the observations you made were not all that relevant, or were incorrect, such as the Marketplace. You stated that someone who was willing to spend a lot of money could have a distinct advantage by buying items in the Marketplace. This just isn't correct. The armor and weapons that you can buy in the Marketplace are purely cosmetic. Only the purchase of some potions, such as potions of experience, can give a player a slight advantage, but not in combat, but more just a slight boost to experience gain. I was an original EQ2 player, and yes, the game definitely had some major growing pains, but after those were sorted out, the first 5 years of EQ2 were some of the most enjoyable gaming that I have ever done. After an almost 10 year hiatus, I went back to EQ2 to try out all the new content since I had quit. My gameplay style has changed a lot since the old days of MMOs, and I am now very much a Solo Player. As such, I have found that gioing back to EQ2 has been incredibly fun and challenging, and playing mostly solo, the lack of server population is not really a factor that bothered me. There are a number of really great guilds to join, and the long time veteran players of those guilds can give you all sorts of advice and help. Guilds are something you really didn't touch on, but that is a major part of the current EQ2 experience. I would definitely recommend getting the Daybreak Games All-Access Membership pass. Try it for a month or two at $15/month, and if you really start to like the game, you can get a 1 year membership for just $10/month, which is quite the bargain, considering how much time you can spend playing this incredibly in-depth game. Btw, just in case anyone is wondering, almost all race/class combinations solo well, and it is more than possible to solo a character from Level 1 right up to the current max of Level 125. Have fun, and thanks again for the great review!

It’s been a bit but thanks! Varsoon was super fun while I played it. A lot of pay to skip is in the game though depending on the server. Like the spell upgrades, level boosts and crafting stuff. If that stuff is in the pvp servers for instance players would hop on spell upgrades using real money in a heart beat to get an advantage. Kronos are also just an item you can buy, trade to another player for tons of gold and then buy whatever equipment you want. To be fair a lot of games do this though, wow tokens and rs bonds for comparison.

No other MMO comes close to the amount of content that went into EQ 1 & 2 and yet it doesn't have the following that it should.... I think there are so many factors but the strongest one for me is that people are always looking for greener pastures when in reality they are standing on one if only they would put the time into finding out. There are some gems out there but you've got to find yours and stick with it to make it better. I remember when WoW came out and some people started making excuses about playing WoW by justifying how EQ was not what it was or there are to many technical problems with the game.... Just be honest with yourself and know what you like in a game and put your energy into it. Sure if the game doesn't deliver move on but don't make excuses for yourself changing your mind on a whim because you think something is better. End of rant.

If you're looking to start fresh in 2022 don't bother unless you enjoy soloing as the game is dead at lower/mid levels . It's basically just high level players that raid and even that crowd is very thin . This game is very old and was never really that popular to begin with so the pop is suffering although it was a decent game up until about the 5th expansion but its gone completely downhill . I know the diehards will defend it due to all the years they've put into it but for a new player to join you'll very likely be bored of soloing by level 20 .
@murrayallinger2830

Completely disagree. I came back to this game after taking over 10 years off, and jumped back into a Progression server and had an amazing time, right to level 125 ... with 8 different toons. Plus, those same 8 characters are all max level tradeskillers. The quest progressions of EQ2 are amazing, but you need to get out of the old zones, and into the new ones, as the quest content is really much, much better for solo players. Example: don't start out on Newbie Island and then move on to Antonica and/or Commonlands. Instead, start your new characters in either Darklight Woods, Frostfang Sea, Timorous Deep or Greater Faydark. All 4 of these have great, fun, enjoyable questlines, with tons of side quests, and take your character from 1-20 quickly. After that, it's Butchblock Mountains, etc.

I know your not damning an mmo for “lack of character options/paths” lol. Wow was super successful and yet only provided 5 class options at launch. 6 after they gave each realm the other special class. By now they’ve added several more but honestly, to me, it hasn’t helped much. If you’re only going to have a game with 2 waring faction, you should really provide a lot of options for the player. Think daoc (before they wowafied that game to). 3 realms with massive options to choose from. Each “had” something the other didn’t. I say had because they have long since ruined that as well.

@murrayallinger2830
@murrayallinger2830 9 ай бұрын
@@mercster EQ2 guilds are probably the best design of any MMO that I have ever played. Not only are the guild halls huge, but they can be player designed, and can look and feel fantastic. Plus, if the guild is developed enough, it allows you to do one-stop shopping in your guild hall, instead of running all over the map. The guild hall can include a banker, a broker (player traded item market), a guild buff, portals to all the zones in-game, and chests for guild members to contribute collection items, spells, tradeable armor, etc. Plus, a good guild will have a Timeless Chronomage, that allows you to mentor down to a particular level, so you can solo content that you missed, or if you want to get some stuff for your alternates. But, the most important thing about being a part of a great guild of friendly people, is just being a part of a fun community within the game. Veteran players can also offer lots of advice and tips, and even come to help with some difficult bosses. It makes the whole experience much less "lonely" as you called it.

Yeah, this is a pretty shallow review. It's obvious he jumped in game for a couple hours in order to get the footage for this video and got a very surface level impression. The biggest reason both EQ games lost players doesn't have anything to do with the gameplay itself...it's the lack of optimization and unusually high system requirements (which is also a product of terrible optimization) They gambled on the direction hardware would go in the future and lost, siding with raw CPU clock speeds instead of multi-core cpu and graphics card progression. The result, for even EQ1, is software that runs WAY worse than it should on modern machines. (tip: keep an eye on your SSD health if you play EQ2, it'll shorten it's life considerable) Everquest 1 or 2 has always required a more powerful machine, but delivering very mediocre results and much choppy gameplay with horrible server-side lag. Meanwhile, WoW ran smooth as butter on almost any machine from the start. So you have a choice...1. probably having to buy/build a new rig just to run 1 game just to have it run with barely passable results....or 2. Use the machine you have had for 4-5 years and play a game that runs smooth as silk. Not much of a decision. You go option 2 9/10. This is the ultimate failure of Everquest, in spite of the innovations they had in the MMO genre....nobody gives them credit because usually the first time people see it is in WoW because Blizzard just steals the ideas from Everquest. Not all ideas....just the good ones;> heh

I feel like personally I go more in depth in these videos than other content creators since I play more than just a few hours. (On the progression server unless you get power leveled is like classic wow speed) It is a shame about the launch being so flubbed with the game requiring such a high end rig to play. The community explained that was the case when I was looking in the Reddit for information. There’s a world out there where EverQuest 2 became the popular game over WOW.

@@sawyercustom I personally have not had an issue with boxers, but the topic, as you likely know, it highly controversial. Games have to decide either to allow it or not. Some games allow it on certain servers, while not on other servers. I believe Daybreak allows it on the free servers, but not on the progression servers. Everquest 2 became worst and worst with the time. Its only a game to try to get your money with extremely expensive microtransaction and if you start new and not a long player you need to finish some skilllevels from past because some of your kills will be *10 with this. Daybreak only hold this game for money. The mainquests for adds were a joke, so fast made, otherwise some typical stupid quests kill here kill there. I started playing this game at 2004 and now its less than a small shadow, its nothing, it has a toxic communiy, some less raidforces with toxic persons(played on the only eu server). Crafting is useless, the addon crafterquest took 45 minuten in the last addon. At last this game is dead, no special features, nothing special to to instead of going the 1 or 2 instances. Normaly this game could be one of the bests if they take all the content added since 2004. Normaly this gamename is wrong now, its not everquest 2 (no clanquests, no real heritagequests anymore). Its only a short quest after addon start for normal and crafting and after that you can run 1 heroic to farm and late increaste the level to this instance (was in the last addon). Dont waste your money and time. This game is dead from players, from development. Its only very bad repeatable content and as mentioned before, this game ist much more worst that a shadow of its start in 2004.... Only some last people play in some raids. At last f2p is a fake. If you really wanna go instances heroics and more and wanna raid, you need good armor up to mythic but with f2p you cant raid, you cant wear very good armor. So this is a bad joke.

This game is past dead. By every standard measure of an MMO game we hold today, this game should be retired. There are no "groups" until you are max level, and then only if you are known and in the in crowd that does raid. Out of Character questions are simply ignored by 99% of current population. Most guilds are the same way as everyone is on a solo mission for Kronos to keep playing. There is no thriving economy. You travel from zone to zone and find no one. All old world zones have been abandoned. Just shut it down. I keep returning and within a week I realize why I left again. No one home.
