Evonne Goolagong was the most graceful and elegant player in the womans game ever,no dissrespect to anyone else. She also had a sense of fair play and was a pleasure to watch,very classy and ladylike-and not a grunt to be heard!

I remember watching (on t.v.) 1972 semi-final at wimbledon. Brother supporting Chris and me Evonne. And Dan Maskill saying "These girls are winning games in clusters" and "What a peach of a shot", and "Oh I Say, a dream volley" Marvelous, thanks for posting.

Thanks. Chris was a little chubby then, but she was so good. Goologong was fun too.

Evonne was in a class of her own when it came to her graceful, elegant and stylish fluidity that belied her athletic ability. She was a tough cookie!

Thank you so much. The Evert/Goolagong rivalry is sometimes overlooked. Goolagong was such a dancer on the court....especially on grass.

It's such a bliss watching the game of these two players. So well-thought, smart and graceful in the time of the wooden rackets. A great example for the actual tennisplayers

What happened to my sport? It was once a game of beauty, grace and style. Now it's all grunts and groans with 120mph serves and hi tech racquets and shoes. I still restring my Davis and Wilson wooden racquets. I use them often longing for the days gone by.

Evonne would surely have won the US Open if it had continued to be played on grass. The switch to clay in 1975, and then to hard courts from 1978, helped Chris Evert immeasurably.

Followers of Chris's game know she lost the 1980 Wimbledon final to Goolagong b/c of a mental letdown after finally beating Navratilova in the semis (after losses to Martina in 78 and 79). It's surprising to see Evert underestimate Goolagong in the final. Anyone who watched that final knows Evert was not herself (she never played more sloppily in a major final). Regardless, Evonne deserves the win for not letting up against Chris. But on a a regular day Chris would've beaten Goolagong.

wow Chris meant business with her groundstrokes back in her early years, really going after them. I feel in her 30's she just pushed her groundstrokes a little too much, thus losing so much to Martina in her later career

Evonne won the Virgina Slims Championships a week or so after this match, beating Martina Navratilova in straight sets in the round robin stage and Chris Evert 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the final.

The reason i wrote that comment was the fact that I did not like the way how one users had tried to give away credit from Evert. I think you are absolutely right about Evonnes game but I think that they had some wonderful matches no matter who of those two champions won them!She was past her prime the last 3 or 4 times that she lost but they had a great match at the citizen cup 1982.It was never my purpose to insault a champion as Evonne.

I don't know if Evonne attended Chris's first wedding. She certainly doesn't look pregnant here. I already said the fact that the US Open was played on clay between 1975 and 1977 helped Evert's game immeasurably.

@goolagong68 For me there is one simple answer: If she was pregnant, she shouldn't have played that match!! And I also think you dont help her with such a weak excuse.She felt fine enough to play and it was her decision to play the final, so it is just honorless to keep telling: Oh, she was pregnant that was so unfair"

I loved seeing this. Evonne was such a fluid player. If her concentration had have been better I'm sure she would have won more majors. I remember watching her at times and she would play the most brilliant point and then miss the easiest shot in the book.
@iCyclone

I agree with davisracquet-- the game was much "prettier" 30 years ago. The game was slower, and the points were therefore more interesting to watch and there was more grace and elegance. There was also more variety in the playing styles-- each player was unique. Everyone now hits the same way-- the players seem factory-produced. No doubt the players today would demolish the players of the 1970s-- but the game was more fun to watch then.

If the fact that Evert had three husbands is the only thing you can use to back up your opinion than you really have a lack of reasonable arguments.A person with so many lacking things should rather think about his own poor situation than trying to insult a great champion of sports.I dont need to insult Evonne.I respect and admire her but she simply wasn`t always able to compete aggainst Evert succesfully.What is so horrible about that?It is not reducing her standard as a great champion at all!

Evonne's daughter Kelly was born in May 1977, so Evonne is about one month pregnant here, not that that made much difference.

When did I insult Evonne Goolagong? Are you crazy or just unable to read my comments correctly ...I called her a great champion and I love Evonne so what is the reason for writing me such a stupid comment ??Just show me the passage where is insulted Evonne! You will not find a single one!

Whenever they played on grass the score was close and it depended on the daily form of the players.And again:For me Evonne is a great champion although I am able to count corectly and therefore know that Evert had the upper hand in their wonderful rivalry.It is really not only an indication on your lack of intelligence but also on your lack of honor that you can only answer by trying to insult me.

I think you got me wrong. I was just saying that her pregnancy was a weak excuse due to the reason which I have already mentioned!This however does not alter the fact that I am a big Evonne fan too.I love her fluent game and i would never call her a cow (even though she looks more similar to a cow than Evert does) or would negate that she was great champion.I simply hate it when such weak excuses are used to justify a bad day or a weak match performance. Thats all :D

@newmark401
@newmark401 16 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with Evonne's timing - Chris is just dictating the rally, swinging Evonne from side to side. Chris won the 1976 US Open for the loss of 12 games in 6 matches and didn't lose on clay at all between August 1973 and May 1979. Pregnant or not, Evonne beat Chris a few months later in their next match, the final of the Virgina Slims Championships, which was played on a hard court.

your comment 'so she was pregnant 25 times' in reference to the amount of times chris beat her is insaulting to a great champion like Gong. The last four times were when she was way past even caring anymore. Fact will alwyas be that Evonnes game was far more prone to errors than Chris's (Good luck to Chris) and if Evonne was on she usually cleaned her up but Evonne simply didnt care that much ..Thank god there was someone like her in the mix. After two kids she lost the last 4 but she didnt care

It's so funny that privacy and personal respect completely disappear when such extreme enthusiasts like you think that they can make the standard of their favourites better by trying too drag their favourites opponents through the dirt.I am really sorry for you that you believe in this strange and lousy strategy and I can only hope that you will finally accept that Evert had the upper hand over Goolagong which of course does not alter the fact that Evonne was a great champion

I am not sure what open letter you are referring to but I think your comment is inaccurate. There is no way that todays players, eg Williams sisters, would be able to play with the power of today back in Chrissie's era of this clip as they only had wooden rackets! Todays racket technology allows Serena to bludgeon a ball at incredible speed, but not so a wooden racket. In fact i am guessing if Williams was around in Everts era then her game would look more like this, with no boom boom.

yes and Evoonne could have made an exscuse for all her losses too.... but in the end thats all they are, exscuses! Evonne was a gifted player and beat Chris fair and square, end of story, no need to go on with she would have beat her if for xyz! We could also say Hana Mandlikova would have been Chris many times more because she was probably more talented but a headcase, but its all speculation
@justnatural
@justnatural 15 жыл бұрын
tennis is a lot more than power it is also vvery mental and in that department chris had oceans more than the williams sisters. look at serenas grand slam record she has consistently lost in early round especially at french. chris has the best win ratio in history and 18 gs titles, serena won't get near that

the last four matches were non events as Evonne had her second kid, although she gave her a run for her money the third last time.....She beat Evert 13 times and thats more than just about anyone apasrt from Navratilova. They even changes the US open to clay in 75 and 76 which totally suited Evert. Thanks god for Wimbledon 1980 when she killed the cow at her own game. Oh well Evert has as many Wimbledons as Husbands at last count lolz
